Campus Travel News: new process for advising on campus car park and local road updates

We have created the Campus Travel Updates Page to assist in planning your journey with information about planned travel disruptions that we have been made aware of.

Where possible we will endeavour to provide advance notice on full or partial closures of our campus car parks and any local roads. Please be aware we are reliant on receiving information from third parties and this may affect the notice we are able to provide to users. This is a new process and will replace the use of notices within the campus car parks. Therefore we advise that you check this page regularly.

Permit Price Changes 2022/2023

From the 1st August 2021, some of the Permits to Park on campus prices will be increased. The permits enable you to park on campus within a marked bay Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.

The annual increase of the University of Kent Permits to Park on campus are essential to maintain contributions towards the cost of parking operations and enable us to work towards the objectives set out in the University Travel Plan.

The new permit prices are all displayed on our Transport web pages and the web links for these pages are listed below. In comparison to other universities, the University of Kent’s parking permits remain at a lower cost and we continue to offer free parking permits for Government Blue Badge holders and for those that travel by motorcycle.

There are various different permits available and we recommend that you consider the most appropriate permit for you. For instance, you may wish to reapply for your usual permit; or if you are hybrid working then you may wish to consider applying for a daily permit.

Are You Aware of The 2022 Highway Code Changes?

There are some new Highway Code rules which will be coming into effect on the 29th January 2022, to improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. These changes will create greater responsibility for drivers. Three of the biggest Highway Code changes have been explained below.

Rule H1: New Hierarchy of Road Users. Drivers of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce danger to others.

Rule H2: New Priority for Pedestrians at Junctions. At a junction, drivers, motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning. You should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross a zebra crossing (currently you only have to give way if they are already on the crossing), and to pedestrians and cyclists waiting to cross a parallel crossing.

Rule H3: New Priority for Cyclists When Cars are Turning. You should not cut across cyclists, horse riders or horse drawn vehicles going ahead when you are turning into or out of a junction or changing direction or lane. This applies whether they are using a cycle lane/track, or riding ahead on the road and you should give way to them. Do not turn at a junction if to do so would cause the cyclist, horse rider, or horse drawn vehicle going ahead to stop or swerve. You should stop and wait for a safe gap in the flow of cyclists if necessary.

New transportation around the campus

The University of Kent continues to participate in the electric scooter trial. You can use the electric scooters as an easy way to get around without the need for car travel, therefore reducing your carbon footprint and easing congestion.

The e-scooters included in this trial are all supplied for a leading electric scooter sharing company, Bird. All of the scooters are GPS connected to a controlled set route and if the scooter deviates from this route they will slow down and stop. In line with the Government guidelines on e-scooter trails, during this trial the scooters will use the same road space as bicycles and will not be allowed on the pavement or outside of the trail area.

In addition, the speed is set remotely depending on where the scooter is located. In busier areas the speed is at walking pace, and in cycle lanes the scooter goes up to 15mph.

Please note: The rules for private e-scooters have not changed. Only the trial schemes can be used on the highway. If you use an e-scooter illegally you could face a fine, get penalty points on your license or the e-scooter could be impounded.

Managing your parking permit account and Canterbury parking disruption

On the new permit system you manage your own parking permit account. If you are coming in a different vehicle, for example a courtesy car, you can log in to your permit account and add the courtesy car to your permit. If you have more than one vehicle on your permit, make sure the vehicle you are currently driving is the active vehicle.

Staff
To check which vehicle is active on your permit, log in to the permit system and select “My permits”. Click on the green vehicle icon and either tick the vehicle you want to become active, or select “switch vehicle”.

“Switch vehicle” means that the other vehicle on your permit account will become “active” and will be the registered to park on campus in accordance with your parking permit.

To add a new vehicle (including temporary vehicles), log in to the permit system and select “My permits” and “add vehicle”.

Students
To add a new vehicle (including temporary vehicles), log in to the permit system and select “My permits”. Click on the green vehicle icon to view the vehicle page and then select the blue pen icon to amend your vehicle details. Please note there is a limit to the number of times you can amend your parking permit.

Canterbury car park disruption

29-30 November 2017- 3 way traffic control system

We have been advised that on Wednesday and Thursday there will be a 3 way traffic control system on St Thomas Hill at the entrance to campus. This may cause delays, particularly at peak times, so please allow extra time for your journey.
