Summer Ball pedestrian and cycle disruptions

Kent Union’s annual Summer Ball is being held on Saturday 2 June 2018. For this event to take place safely there will be some disruptions to pedestrian and cycle access on campus.

Wednesday 30 May – Saturday 2 June

  • Eliot garden will be closed while Kent Union set up the area for the Summer Ball.
  • All walk ways will remain accessible until 18.00 Saturday.

Saturday 2 June 18.00 – Sunday 3 June 03.00

  • All walk ways through to Eliot and Locke building will be closed.
  • There will be no access to the Eliot cycle shelters or cycle bays to the side of Marlowe building.
  • The taxi rank outside the Venue will be closed on Saturday from 18.00. A temporary taxi rank is being created in Rutherford car park for the event.

We strongly advise that you relocate your bicycle to a different cycle shelter before 17.30 on Saturday.

Book to guarantee your seat on the Campus Shuttle

Book online to guarantee a seat on the shuttle service. We recommend booking a seat, particularly when you have an exam.

Please note the shuttle runs a different timetable for the weekend so make sure you check and plan your journey before you travel if you have a weekend exam.

If you do not book a seat you can still travel on the service by showing your KentOne card as long as seats are available.

Car park and road disruptions- Canterbury and Medway

Road diversion (University road, Canterbury)

  • Saturday 26 May- Sunday 3 June (approx.) – It has been agreed that Kent Highways can divert traffic via University road as part of the Radfall road closure to complete cabling works.

Kent School Games training day (Pavilion car park, Canterbury)

  • Tuesday 5 June- 13 bays will be reserved to accommodate minibuses for the Kent School Games training day in the Pavilion car park, as requested by Kent Sport.

Kent Union Summer ball (Eliot and Rutherford car parks)

  • Sunday 27 May- Monday 4 June- Eliot car park will be closed in preparation for the Summer Ball, as requested by Kent Union. The car park will be reopened Tuesday 5 June.
  • Saturday 2 June- Sunday 3 June- Rutherford car park will be closed so it can be used as a taxi rank for the Summer Ball, as requested by Kent Union. Please ensure your car is removed from the car park by 22.00 Friday 1 June. The car park will be reopened late Sunday 3 June.

Medway campus

  • There are no known disruptions to parking at Medway campus over the next two weeks. Any disruptions that we are made aware of will be updated on the transport events calendar

Summer Unibus timetable

The Unibuses run to a different timetable during the summer vacation. The summer timetable can be viewed online (takes you to Stagecoach website) or in reception areas across campus.

Summer Unirider bus ticket

Staying on campus or the local area over the summer vacation? Student Unirider tickets expire 17 June 2018.

The Summer Unirider is valid 18 June to 15 September 2018 and allows unlimited travel on all Stagecoach buses in Kent and East Sussex.

Purchase the Summer Unirider for only £75. The equivalent public price ticket would cost £267.

Become a volunteer Community Route Champion with Sustrans

The walking and cycling charity Sustrans are launching a specific volunteer programme to look after the local off road cycle routes in Canterbury and Whitstable and are looking for local people who would like to contribute to their community by being Community Route Champions.

Do you live in Canterbury or Whitstable? Are you active and enjoy practical stuff?

Our Community Route Champions monitor and maintain the everyday off-road cycling routes that are important for so many essential journeys such as getting to work, to school or the shops.

They make a real difference to everyday cycling and walking in Canterbury and Whitstable.

From clearing overgrown vegetation to cleaning signs and reporting potholes you’ll be doing practical activities to keep these routes usable, learning new skills as well as your existing knowledge and experience.

As part of Sustrans national Volunteer Programme you’ll receive training and support from your local Sustrans team and your fellow Champions.

Come to the Estates Showcase – Tuesday 26 June

Colleagues are warmly invited to attend the Estates Showcase on Tuesday 26 June, in the Darwin Conference Suite from 10.00-15.00.

The showcase is being held to offer everyone the opportunity to meet some of our staff and gain a better insight into the various sections of Estates, including Maintenance, Space Planning, Waste & Cleaning, Interior Services, Grounds Maintenance, Projects, Security, Design & Print and more.

We are also excited to announce that we will be launching our new Customer Services Centre at the showcase, so please do come along to meet the team behind this initiative.

Car park and road disruptions- Canterbury and Medway

Employability Points interviews (Keynes car park, Canterbury)

  • Tuesday 8 May- Friday 25 May- Up to 6 bays will be reserved for Employability Points interviewers each day, as requested by Kent Innovation and Enterprise.

Road disruption (Park Wood road, Canterbury)

  • Monday 14 May- Wednesday 16 May (approx.) – Part of Park Wood road will be closed due to the building works at the old Woody’s site. During this time buses will not be serving the bus stops along Park Wood road. Please take extra care in this area and follow the temporary signage as part of the one-way system will temporarily be two-way traffic.

Maintenance survey (Giles Lane, Canterbury)

  • Saturday 19 May- Sunday 20 May- Giles Lane pink and blue zone car park will be fully closed for a site survey. Please ensure your vehicle is removed by 22.00 Friday 18 May. The car park will be reopened by Monday morning.

Dr Bike at Medway and GK Unions cycle tour

Dr Bike is visiting Medway campus Tuesday 15 May 2018. Find Dr Bike outside the Student Hub 11.30-14.30 for your free bike check-up. The service is available to University of Greenwich and University of Kent students and staff.

Get your bike checked and adjusted for free. Additional work will be quoted individually but will always be at a special reduced rate.

The Dr Bike service is provided by Chris and his team at ByCycle, working with the Transport Team, Estates department.

Dr Bike is also leading a cycle ride with GK Unions as part of their Give It A Go scheme Thursday 17 May 12.00-14.00.
