Parkwood Road Closure

Parkwood Road will be closed from Monday 23 June to Tuesday 24 June. This is due to urgent repairs and cabling works which need to be carried out.

For those two days, the one way system will allow two way traffic to give access to the car parks coming off of Park Wood road. We will not lose any parking spaces as a result of the closure.

Buses will be unable to serve Parkwood during the works.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

For more information on car park closures please see the Staff and Student Transport Calendar.

Unibuses not serving bus stops along Parkwood Road

Unibuses will not be serving bus stops along Park Wood road from Monday 23 June to Tuesday 24 June. This is due to urgent repairs and cabling works which need to be carried out.

All car parks coming off Park Wood road will still be accessible and the alternative route will be signposted.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Wincheap Park and Pedal

Canterbury City Council have unveiled a new initiative for cyclists in Canterbury. Members of the public will now be able to store their bicycles in a secure cycle compound in Wincheap Park and Ride car park.

The secure compound has keycard entry and is covered by 24/7 CCTV cameras. There’s even a bicycle repair kit in the compound for emergency repairs.

Parking is free for those who use their bicycle to commute around Canterbury. The scheme is available to any member of the public, all you need to pay is a £15 deposit for the keycard.

Using Park and Pedal gives easy access to the scenic bike route into the City Centre, which takes just six minutes. Or commute to campus in just 10 minutes!

Please visit the Security and Transport Centre for a leaflet, or, to apply online, visit: www.canterbury.gov.uk/parkandpedal

Planning your journey- adverse weather

Remember weather can change at any time, be prepared for this before you leave. Please ensure you are familiar with the University’s Snow and Ice Policy to understand what to do during adverse weather. Learn more about gritting and snow clearing on campus.

Driving
Ensure that you and your vehicle are prepared for driving in adverse weather conditions. Read some top tips to prepare for driving during the winter and don’t forget to plan your journey before you leave so you are aware of any disruptions.

Public transport, cycling and walking

  • Plan your journey, check if there are problems on public transport or local roads
  • Delay your journey, if possible, to allow temperatures to rise and ice or snow to melt
  • Avoid footways in the shade. It takes longer for ice or snow to melt in the shade
  • Always wear appropriate footwear and reflective/bright clothing
  • Ensure that you have a torch or lights so motorists and others can see you when walking or cycling

Plan your journey and be prepared for times of adverse weather.

Travel Plan Survey now open- chance to win prizes

The staff and student Travel Plan Survey 2017 is now open. Complete the survey and enter your University of Kent email address for your chance to win £100 cash card to use at the catering outlets on campus, or one of 100 hot drinks vouchers.

Let us know how we can improve travel to, from and around our campuses. The data from the survey helps shape various reports including the University Travel Plans and the Movement and Transport Strategy which feeds into the Canterbury campus 50 year Masterplan.

This is your opportunity to let the Estates Department know how we can improve travel to, from and around our campuses. Have your say on buses, cycling, parking, the Campus Shuttle and more.

The survey takes between 5-10 minutes to complete. There is also a “finish later” option if you need to return to complete the survey. The survey closes Friday 8 December 2017.

We’re moving! New Security and Transport Centre

The Transport Team are relocating to the new Security and Transport Centre (map) with Campus Security on 8 May 2017. The building is an extension of the current Campus Security building, located between the two banks on central campus.

We are excited for the opportunity to improve collaboration with Campus Security and to enhance the services we provide from a more central location. The new building delivers an improved working environment for the teams and includes a reception area that has been specifically designed to improve customer experience. The new location also provides us with the space to expand of our team so we can process enquiries more efficiently.

The opening times for the Security and Transport Centre are as follows:

  • Transport Team: Monday- Friday 8.30- 17.00
  • Campus Security: always open

For all travel enquiries, including collection of parking permits and staff bus passes, please come to the Security and Transport Centre. The building continues to be developed so we will keep you updated.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused but look forward to seeing you in the new Security and Transport Centre.

Understanding Gritting

Timing is everything. If you go too early, you waste it, because it lands on a dry road and is blown away by the displaced air as vehicles drive past. If it is raining heavily (like yesterday afternoon) then it just washes away. Ideally it goes down on a damp surface and starts to stick, but if you are too late the surface is already frozen and the salt has to work harder to be effective but will prevent big sheets of ice forming.

The salt is hygroscopic which means that it attracts moisture from the air and it only becomes activated when it’s ‘trafficked’. So when it’s driven over the salt grinds down and mixes with the moisture it attracts and becomes the ideal brine, a salty water, which is when it is most effective.

Estates staff have all been working hard to ensure that the University can continue to operate during these adverse weather conditions. Please be aware that Canterbury campus is over 300 acres and has many walkways, steps, roads, car parks, accessible ramps and cycle routes. Similar to how local authorities manage gritting, we grit these areas according to their priority as not all areas can be covered at all times.

We would like to thank Grounds Maintenance at Canterbury campus and FM team at Medway campus for being on site last night and the early hours of this morning to make sure the priority roads and footpaths are gritted.

Snow and ice- Canterbury and Medway campuses

At Canterbury campus Grounds Maintenance, Estates, have gritted priority roads, pathways and car parks throughout the night and this morning.

At Medway campus gritting contractors and the Estates FM team have gritted priority roads, pathways and car parks this morning. Access roads to Dockyard buildings are clear as Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust have gritted the roads onsite overnight and the Estates FM team have gritted the entrance to the buildings this morning.

Please drive carefully and take extra precautions when walking to and from your vehicle and around campus as some areas may still be slippery.

We recommend you check traffic news or your transport provider for travel updates during this adverse weather. Visit www.kent.ac.uk/transport/planning  for useful links to transport (and road) twitter accounts and service updates webpages.

We are also trying to tweet some travel updates from our @unikent_travel twitter account, which can also be viewed online at www.kent.ac.uk/transport/news
