Launch of The War Illustrated online resource

This Saturday sees the launch of the Digitizing The War Illustrated project online, organised by the Network of Research: Movies, Magazines, and Audiences (NoRMMA).

NoRMMA are a research network situated within the School of Arts, founded in 2014, which began with focus on the use of fan magazines for the purpose of film history research.

This National Lottery-funded project centres on digitizing the important World War I magazine The War Illustrated (1914-1919) and making it available online for all, and for free, for the first time.

The formal inauguration of the digitised resource will be celebrated with a special event and vintage tea dance on Saturday afternoon, 7 September 2019.

Everyone is welcome to come hear interesting talks about the project, witness – and participate in! – enjoyable dance lessons with music of the time, and enjoy an afternoon tea. This event will be held in the School of Arts’ Jarman Building, 2pm to 5pm.

University of Kent Players’ play about Alzheimer’s 5-7 September

The University of Kent Players are proud to present Gail Young’s ‘Bothered & Bewildered’ this September.

The play will be performed at 19.30 from 5-7 September at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NB.

Tickets are on sale via the Gulbenkian website in person at the Gulbenkian ticket office, or over the phone 01227 769075.

Bothered & Bewildered is a comic drama that follows Irene and her two daughters Louise and Beth as they begin a long journey in which the girls lose their mum in spirit but not in body. As her family struggle to come to terms with her Alzheimer’s, Irene’s past passion for romantic fiction blurs with reality. She discusses with her unseen and witty companion Barbara Cartland (Irene’s favourite and now deceased world famous romantic novelist) how best to write her ‘memory book’, disclosing to Barbara long kept family secrets that she would never reveal to anyone else.

Kent Union To Open Second Campus Co-op

The second Kent Union campus Co-op will open next Thursday 29 August, and you’re invited to join us for the ribbon cutting at 10am!

All staff and students are welcome to pop along and try some samples and check out the new store which promises to make shopping on campus an easier and quicker experience. To celebrate the store opening there are 20 Golden Tickets to be found on campus, to swap at the store for a £5 gift card! Plus there will be some lucky winners in store on the day, you’ll have to pop along to find out what!

The store will stock a wide range of Co-op products, making it cheaper for those with both NUS Totum cards (10% off) plus Co-op members can earn an extra 5%*. Stocking all your usual favourites, the expansion of the store into what was Jobshop, means the larger store has increased range of goods available. There will be an in-store bakery, newspapers – including Inquire, your monthly student newspaper, fresh fruit & veg, alongside a wider range of meal deals and evening offers. Research contributes to understanding of lifeways of enslaved people in Caribbean

Postgraduate student Felicia Fricke, who has recently completed her PhD in Classical & Archaeological Studies, has received media attention in the Caribbean islands of Curaçao and St Maarten for the research she undertook for her thesis entitled The Lifeways of Enslaved People in Curaçao, St Eustatius, and St Maarten/St Martin: A Thematic Analysis of Archaeological, Osteological, and Oral Historical Data.

Felicia’s research combined oral history, archaeological and skeletal data to generate a narrative about the lifeways of enslaved people on the Dutch Caribbean islands of Curaçao, St Eustatius, and St Maarten/St Martin.

In an interview aired on television show Prome Enkuentro, Felicia notes the dominant narrative from this period has been developed from accounts given by European colonisers and that it is important that “other voices are heard” when describing the lived experiences of enslaved people in this region of the Caribbean. In combining archaeological evidence with other records including oral histories from those resident on the islands, Felicia has been able to construct a narrative that better describes these lifeways. In continuing her research, she hopes to make the results open access so that the information is made available to the people of the islands.

Felicia’s research has also been featured in local press including the Saint Martin News Network (in English) and in print in a recent edition of Amigoe Nieuws (in Dutch).

Felicia is pictured below (centre) in St Maarten with Dr Jay Haviser, the archaeologist in charge of the St Maarten Archaeological Center, and Jennifer Yerkes from the St Martin organisation Les Fruits de Mer, which runs the Amuseum Naturalis on the French side of the island.

DICE talks

DICE are continuing their monthly talks tomorrow evening, given by Fiona Dobson and Tom Wells. It will showcase their research on “Parks as flagships & Bolivia’s turtle trade”.

The talk will take place on Thursday 22nd August from 18.00-19.00 at the Rutherford Lecture Theatre 1 and is open to everyone in the community.

The DICE talks are a monthly set of free and public events that showcase the work of DICE members, students and alumni. They take place between 18:00 and 19:00 on a Thursday each month and everyone is welcome to attend.

Further alumni at the Edinburgh Fringe

Further to our announcement about our alumni featuring at the Edinburgh Festival, we’re pleased to announce that alumna Invi Brenna, who completed an MA in Theatre Making in 2016, will be performing in Love and Misinformation by theatre company The Improvised Play at the Greenside theatre at the Royal Terrace, from Monday 19 to Saturday 24 August 2019.

Love and Misinformation is a spontaneous play in the style of Caryl Churchill. Connected and heartfelt, revolutionary and irreverent, the The Improvised Play (pictured) will break and remake its format every night. Anything is possible, but they guarantee you’ll be surprised, provoked, and moved. The ensemble have chosen to emulate Caryl Churchill because they are impressed by her honesty, her flexibility, her quiet genius and her revolutionary spirit. They hope her influence will shine through their work.

The performance has already been a focus of a feature in The Stage newspaper.

Moving Memory to perform ‘Love Grows’

Moving Memory Dance Theatre Company, created by Sian Stevenson, Senior Tutor and Lecturer in Drama and Theatre in the School of Arts, will be performing ‘Love Grows’ at The Gulbenkian, the University’s on-campus commercial cinema and theatre, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August 2019. The performance is part of the bOing! Family festival 2019.

The show will celebrate love between generations, telling stories of love and friendship which emerged during a series of workshops that have taken place across Kent with four primary schools and four older peoples’ settings. It will feature a combination of dance and a digital installation, bringing together an inter-generational company that will groove its moves promenade style through the festival goers at four points during the day.

‘Love Grows’ will be the second show on an ongoing project, ‘Still Stomping’, developed in partnership with Gulbenkian, Canterbury and Kent County Council, and with funding from the Baring Foundation and Arts Council England’s Celebrating Age scheme.

Moving Memory has built a reputation for creating bespoke projects that offer older people high-quality, creative, movement-led opportunities focusing on animating the stories of the everyday via movement, music, spoken word and digital forms. Their work is targeted primarily at the older generation but from the outset they have worked with younger people as performers, performance assistants, stage managers, digital artists, and filmmakers.

Success at TUCO Awards for Kent Hospitality

Congratulations are in order for the catering team at Kent Hospitality as they were awarded the prestigious ‘Member of the Year’ Award at the 2019 TUCO (The University Caterers’ Organisation) Annual Conference earlier this month, held at the University of York.

The award recognises the institution that has made the most significant contribution to the work of TUCO with Kent praised for their support of framework agreements, attendance at events, training courses, tender working parties and other activities. The other two shortlisted Institutions were the University of Manchester and the University of St Andrews.

Japan Festival 14 August

Come and have a go at Japanese crafts and meet students from Kobe, Kogakkan and Musashino at our free event on 14 August.

You will be able to try your hand at a range of traditional Japanese arts and crafts, such as calligraphy and origami. The event takes place at the Centre for English and World Languages in the Chipperfield atrium from 5pm-6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome!
