Kent Gives Back at bOing festival August- We need you!

Kent Gives Back, in partnership with Kent Union, is a great opportunity to enhance skills and networks whilst working together for a local community cause that matters to you.

On Saturday 25 August we are asking a group of Kent students and alumni to come and support us and volunteer at the bOing! Festival from 09:00 -17:00. But, we still appreciate it if you can only come along to volunteer for a couple of hours.

The festival takes place on the beautiful University of Kent campus in Canterbury. It will be an amazing day showcasing the very best in theatre, dance, music, films and fun for all the family, packed with magical performances and experiences.

There are many volunteering opportunities with bOing! that you can get involved in, such as being a production volunteer or a technical volunteer. You will gain extraordinary insight into the running of a venue/event. We are committed to helping you develop your skills and your confidence concerning the task of your choice. You will have the opportunity to meet others with a shared passion and also watch quality performances and screenings.

Last year’s volunteer, alumna, and current PhD student, Kasia Senyszyn (Keynes 2004), said of the experience: “…it’s so much fun, it’s a valued contribution to the fantastic programme, and seeing young and old being inspired for life right here in our city was incredible. Plus I met wonderful people and watched amazing work – for free!”

Kent Hospitality Housekeeping success at the annual BACHE Awards

Many congratulations are due to the Kent Hospitality Housekeeping department who won the ‘Cleaning Supervisor of the Year 2018’ Award at the British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education (BACHE) Awards in May.

By recognising the importance of professional cleaning activities in higher education institutions, BACHE aims to standardise training for cleaning staff, improve cleaning standards, and professionalise the delivery of cleaning and associated services on campus. This year the BACHE awards were held during the annual conference at Aston University.

With only three nomination categories, the team were delighted that Amanda Intrieri, Housekeeping Supervisor in Park Wood won the ‘Cleaning Supervisor of the Year 2018’ award, recognising her efforts and professionalism in performing her role. Kent were also given honourable mentions in the two other categories; the ‘Best Practice Award 2018’, distinguishing teams who continually develop their procedures to enhance the delivery of cleaning services on campus, and the ‘Cleaning Operative of the Year 2018’ award for Hayley Dyer, who works in Eliot College.

Gary Sayles, Executive Housekeeping Manager at Kent Hospitality said: ‘We are thrilled at our success at the BACHE Awards. To be recognised by this national association for our team’s consistent hard work is fantastic, with special congratulations to Amanda Intrieri who won the award. We are proud to deliver a consistently high standard of service here at the University, and to be acknowledged in all three categories is particularly rewarding.’

SMFA Professor of Contemporary Music Tim Howle has new work premiered at the Art & Science Days Festival in France

Professor Tim Howle, SMFA Professor of Contemporary Music has a new acousmatic piece premiered on 27th June in Bourges, France at the Art & Science Days Festival. False Memory of Normandy (2018) was composed in collaboration with the poet J M Fox. Link here: https://soundcloud.com/tim-howle/d-day

Additionally, Sarva Mangalam (2017), which was premiered at Electric Spring, at the University of Huddersfield earlier this year, is performed at the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival on July 17th. It is also being shown at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), South Korea, 5-10th August. It is an audio-visual piece in collaboration with video maker Dr Nick Cope (https://nickcopefilm.com/ ) who currently holds an honorary position at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China.  At its premiere, the performance was supported with a paper: Avoidance Strategies relating the ideas in the piece to those of Brian Eno and Cornelius Cardew at Ambient@40 held at the same time.

Sports Massage

Good news! The Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic will be running a discount on sports massages throughout the month of July to help you get rid of those nagging injuries. Sports massages are being offered at £15 for 30 minutes – and that’s the same great price regardless of whether you’re a Kent Sport member or not.

Please note that due to the renovation of the flooring in the fitness suite to improve customer experience, all physiotherapy and sports massage appointments will take place in the first aid room until 28 July. Please check in at the Sports Centre main reception before your appointment and you will be directed to the first aid room.

Julie Williams- Kent Hospitality’s June PRIDE Award Winner

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the June Kent Hospitality PRIDE Award is Julie Williams, Turing College Domestic Assistant. The Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence Award recognized Julie’s caring personality while consistently providing additional support to residential students on the Canterbury campus.

An extract from one of Julie’s nomination reads: ‘…she has always made sure that I am OK even when I am anxious about exams and she will always give me the best advice […] When I fell very ill, and an ambulance was sent to me, Julie showed the paramedics where I was and a few days later she came around to see if I was OK’.

Any Kent Hospitality staff member (permanent or casual) may be nominated from Canterbury and Medway campuses. The award is given in March, June, September/October and December with each winner receiving £100 of shopping vouchers, a certificate and a Pride pin badge.

It’s really easy to nominate a member of the Kent Hospitality team for a Pride Award. Just visit the Pride website and complete our online form. The closing date for the next Pride Award is Wednesday 26th September 2018 at 12 noon.

Expect Respect E-Module

The compulsory Expect Respect e-module is now available on moodle in correspondence with the new Respect at Kent policy that will come into effect in the new academic year.  The aim of this e-learning module is to introduce new students to the University’s Student Charter and Dignity at Study Policy. This module is available to both staff and students at Kent as we are all responsible for ensuring that the University is a safe place to live and study.

The Changing Face of Medicine

Discover the Changing Face of Medicine

Distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon, Professor Tom Treasure will give a presentation on The Changing Face of Medicine on Monday 18 June.

The event is arranged by the Centre for Professional Practice and will explore how changing ideas in medicine shaped today’s healthcare. It takes place from 19.00-21.00 at Sun Pier House, Medway Street, Chatham, ME4 4HF, and admission is free.

Professor Treasure is currently Honorary Professor of the Clinical Operations Research Unit at University College, London and has chaired, participated and advised numerous initiatives and organisations and was a Director of the British Heart Foundation between 1996 and 2001.

He has wide ranging interests in medicine in general and surgery in particular and, after more than two decades as a world-renowned expert cardiac surgery, broadened his scope to cover both heart and lungs.

His fascination with the history of medicine led him to rescue documents from parts of Guys Hospital which were scheduled for demolition in the course of its refurbishment in the 1990s. Among these were meticulously-kept records belonging to ‘The Heart Club’ a group of surgeons at Guys who pioneered heart surgery in 1940’s Britain. Inspired by this he wrote a book of the same name which detailed the bravery of surgeons who dared to challenge and overturn centuries of dogma using the evidence of treating injured WW2 service personnel to do so.

This free event is hosted by the University of Kent’s Centre for Professional Practice (CPP). The Centre’s part-time, flexible work-related programmes BA/BSc Top-up in Professional Practice or MA/MSc in Professional Practice and short courses have been specifically designed to meet the needs of working professionals who wish to develop their academic ability while maintaining their professional role.

The Student’s Union (Kent Union) Code of Practice

The Students’ Union (Kent Union) Code of Practice has been updated for 2018.

The Code of Practice governs the arrangements for Kent Union, including the rights of members, opting out of membership and other important information.

Kent Union is a registered charity and therefore subject to the restrictions placed on charities by the law.  Kent Union’s charitable objects are the advancement of education of students at the University of Kent for the public benefit by:

1) Promoting the interests and welfare of students at the University of Kent during their course of study and representing, supporting and advising students;

2) Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Kent and any other external bodies; and

3) Providing social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students.
