Canterbury power outage

We have been informed by UK Power Networks that the earlier power outage on the Canterbury campus was the result of a high voltage cable failure in the Canterbury area.

UK Power Networks has re-routed power to the area while they fix the fault. At the moment we don’t expect any further disruption.

If you wish to report any problems with electrical equipment as a result of the earlier outage, please contact the Estates Helpdesk – estateshelpdesk@kent.ac.uk – x3209.

For advice on what to do during a power cut or track the progress of ongoing work by UK Power Networks, please visit their website.

You need to register yourself in order to be able to vote

How do I register?

  1. Go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  2. Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You’ll also need your National Insurance number, which can be found on your National Insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits.

If you don’t have access to the internet or can’t use it, please email electoral.services@canterbury.gov.uk or call 01227 862007.

Why should I register?

To vote: You need to register in order to be able to vote. If you aren’t registered to vote, you won’t have the chance to have a say on who represents you or how things are run.

Some people also register to vote because they want to apply for credit. This is because credit reference agencies use the register to confirm where someone lives when they apply for credit in order to counteract fraud.

As a student, you can register at both your term time address and at the address you live at outside of term time.

Lots of students are missing from the electoral register. No-one else can register for you.

But I thought I was already registered to vote?

If you are unsure whether you are registered, please email electoral.services@canterbury.gov.uk or call 01227 862007.

What if I don’t register?

Not only will you not have a say at future elections and referendums, but if you don’t respond to requests for information from us you could be at risk of getting fined £80.

What if I don’t wish to register in the Canterbury area?

If you do not wish to register in the Canterbury area as you only wish to register at your home address, please email electoral.services@canterbury.gov.uk informing us of your wish not to register, together with your term time address and full name.

Anna Katharina Schaffner publishes debut novel

Dr Anna Katharina Schaffner, Reader in Comparative Literature and Medical Humanities and Head of the Department of Comparative Literature has had her debut novel, The Truth about Julia, published by Allen & Unwin.

In June 2014, Julia White – a beautiful and intelligent young woman – blows up a coffee shop in central London, killing 24 people before turning herself in to the police. Apart from publishing a potentially ironic manifesto, she refuses to explain the reasons for her actions. Clare Hardenberg, an investigative journalist, has been commissioned to write a biography of Julia but at the start of the novel she is on her way to prison herself. What has brought her to this point?

The novel has been described by Waterstones’ reviewers as a ‘gripping psychological thriller’ and a ‘thought-provoking and chilling literary thriller’. One reviewer commented ‘What I liked most about this novel was its intelligence and originality. While it was a proper page-turner, it raised some very thought-provoking questions, making it a more satisfying read than the average thriller.’

The book is available to order at: http://atlantic-books.co.uk/book/The%20Truth%20About%20Julia

Pay What You Decide – Best of BE Fest

Headspinning performances from Europe’s four corners on Wed 6 Apr at 7.30pm. From Italy comes ‘Quintetto’ by TIDA, the 1st prize award winner at this year’s Birmingham based festival; a razor sharp and interactive comedy and physical theatre piece that packs a serious punch dealing with the realities of shoestring budget entertainment.  ‘#sobrejulieta’ is a one-woman show craving to be a dialogue from Spanish company, Grumelot. Using a rather famous bard (2016 is his 400 year commemoration) as a way to the audience’s heart, ‘#sobrejulieta’ uses English, Spanish and projected video texts in this contemporary adaptation of a love story full of excess. The third performance entitled ‘The Whistle’ is by Darragh McLoughlin from Ireland’s Squarehead Productions.

Gulbenkian are trialling a Pay What You Decide ticket policy for Best of BE Festival 2015.  You reserve your tickets in advance for free. You enjoy the show. Then exit you pay what you decide you want to, or can afford to pay, based on your overall enjoyment of the performance.
