The Rocky Horror Picture Show Sing A Long

Friday 25 November Midnight

The ultimate B-movie referencing, Time Warp-ing, cinematic musical extravaganza The Rocky Horror Picture Show Sing A Long is back for the third year running at Gulbenkian with a special midnight screening on Friday 25 November!

Gulbenkian have teamed up with the University of Kent’s Musical Theatre Society again to get you doing the time warp and guide you as you heckle, cheer and sing your way through one of the most interactive films ever. Expect corsets, fishnets, a host of crazy antics and lots of fun.

In the cult classic film, sweethearts Brad and Janet (played with panache by Susan Sarandon), get stuck with a flat tire during a storm and discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (played by a brilliant Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker (Meat Loaf) and a creepy butler. Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.”

Hosted by the Musical Theatre Society, who will be judging you on your excellent (or lack of) fancy dress so dig out your fancy undies, slip on those high heels and join us in those steps to drive you in-sa-ane!

This event is suitable for ages 18+

We are currently recruiting for Academic Ambassadors and I hoped that you might be interested in joining the team. The Academic Ambassador role provides an exciting opportunity for our postgraduate students to work on a range educational and outreach projects.

Patricia Debney to launch new poetry collection

Patricia Debney (Reader in Creative Writing in the School of English) will be launching her recently published collection of poetry, Baby, (Cinnamon Press, 2016) at the Creative Writing Reading Series on Tuesday 11 October. This latest collection looks back at ‘a dysfunctional childhood and a mother who lived a life always on the verge of destruction’. The collection is, ultimately, a celebration of love and family. The poet Jane Monson said of the publication:

‘A compelling third collection, Baby is as quick to illuminate as it is to enshadow. Debney’s unique organisation of fragments, prose poetry and white space, mirrors with a precise and unflinching hand the stuff of life at its most human; that which stays, returns and then vanishes.’

Patricia Debney’s other publications include Gestation (Shearsman Chapbooks, 2014) and a collection of prose poems, Littoral (Shearsman Books, 2013). Her first collection, How to Be a Dragonfly (Smith Doorstop Books), won the 2004 Poetry Business Book & Pamphlet Competition.

The Creative Writing Reading Series is open to students, staff and members of the public and takes place every Tuesday during term time in the Keynes Senior Common Room from 18.00. A donation of £2 is encouraged. Refreshments available.
