Applications now open for postgraduate research studentships

Applications are now open for full time studentships, fee waivers and bursaries for postgraduate research programmes beginning at Kent Law School’s Canterbury campus in 2017.

With more than 60 postgraduate research students, Kent Law School offers a pluralistic and intellectual environment for research in which traditional and critical legal scholarship, theoretical and empirical work, and interdisciplinary studies all flourish.

Ranked 8th in the UK for research intensity in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Kent Law School (and the University) offers a wide range of funding for postgraduate research students interesting in studying for either a PhD or an LLM by research.

PhD funding includes studentships funded through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) via the South East Network for Social Sciences, and through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) via the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South East (CHASE).

Unless otherwise indicated, successful applicants for the studentships will receive a maintenance grant equivalent to that currently offered by the ESRC (£14,296 in 2016/17) and a fee grant which will fully cover tuition fees paid at the Home/EU rate.

For those who intend to undertake an LLM by Research, Kent Law School invites applications for the Larry Grant Scholarship and also offers a number of fee waivers.

Together with a high-quality research proposal, applicants are asked to submit a sample of written work and to apply online by 11 January 2017 for PhD funding or by 5 May 2017 for an LLM by research. If you have any questions, please check the School’s online guidance or email Co-Director of Postgraduate Research Dr Emily Grabham via klspgstudentships@kent.ac.uk.

Loading – contemporary new exhibition in historic setting

30 3rd Year BA (Hons) Fine Art students from the School of Music and Fine Art will be exhibiting their work in historic Rochester High Street, from Saturday 10 – Wednesday 14 December.

This free-to-enter exhibition is a unique opportunity to view contemporary art against the back drop of a Grade II Georgian town house undergoing major renovation. Rooms will be transformed into an array of spaces allowing visitors to experience a variety of multi-cultural and ethnically diverse work, which includes Luiza Jordon’s Feminine Vessels, representing the presence/aura of the female form without explicitly using the nude or body.

New Materialism, the carnivorous behaviour within material ecology, is central to the work of Chenille Harris as she expresses reverence to fungal matter to encapsulate a world of beauty and ugliness.

These are just two of the artists featured. To join the guest list for the Private View on Friday 9 December, 18.00-21.00, please book via Eventbrite.

Thinking about a postgraduate degree in Law?

Students across all degree disciplines at Kent with an interest in studying a Master’s degree in law are invited to drop in to the Law School’s ‘Open House’ event on Wednesday 7 December.

Law School staff and students will be welcoming visitors to the Eliot Extension foyer between 12.00 and 14.00, offering students an informal opportunity to explore their options, to learn more about the Kent LLM and to enjoy a free slice of pizza!

The Kent LLM attracts excellent law graduates from around the world and is also open to non-law graduates who wish to develop an advanced understanding of law in their field.

Students have the opportunity to develop specialisms in a host of subject areas including: Criminal Justice; Environmental Law; European Law; Intellectual Property Law; International Commercial Law; International Criminal Justice; International Environmental Law; International Law with International Relations; International Law; Law and the Humanities; Medical Law and Ethics; and Human Rights Law. The innovative nature of the programme means that students have the option to leave their choice of specialism open until after they arrive, with their specialisms being determined by the modules that they select.

Details of modules are available on our website and an insight into the student experience can be gained by reading the Mastering Law blog.

The Open House event also offers an opportunity to chat about funding options. In addition to a range of scholarships available at Kent, a new system of postgraduate loans in the UK is available to home and EU students for both full-time and part-time study. The loans provide up to £10,000 a year for taught and research Master’s courses in all subject areas. They are subject to eligibility criteria based on age, nationality and residency.

Countdown to University Carol Service in Canterbury Cathedral

The University Carol Service in Canterbury Cathedral takes place at  on Tues 13 Dec. Tickets for students will be given out at the Grimond Foyer on Mon 5 Dec at 12.45; and again on Tues 6th Dec in Keynes LT1 at 19.00.
