Win an iPad (RRP £399) by taking part in online research

Are you a male student at the University of Kent and aged over 18? Do you have 25 minutes spare? If so, please take our short online study and enter a prize draw to win an iPad Mini 4 (RRP £399).

A student in the School of Psychology is currently seeking participants to take part in a 25-minute online study that assesses the psychological and behavioural characteristics of male students at the University of Kent. The study forms the first part of their PhD and is funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC).

Students who take part in the study will be asked to complete thirteen well-known and validated psychological measures – some are short (less than five items) whilst others are slightly longer. All are routinely used in research and clinical practice.

Participation in this study is completely anonymous (unless you choose to withdraw). This means that the researcher will not be able to identify you from your answers, so please respond truthfully. Moreover, under no circumstances will any of the responses you give be passed onto any internal or external authorities, including public protection agencies (e.g., the Police).

In exchange for completing the study in full, participants can enter themselves in a prize draw to win an iPad Mini 4 (RRP £399). Students within the School of Psychology who access the study from their RPS account can also get 1 RPS credit. For the latter, the study title is “The Psychological & Behavioural Characteristics of Male Students”.

Many thanks to those who take part. Please share this call with any relevant parties.

Reflective space: music and landscape photography

A special Lunchtime Concert on Friday 1 February features the meditative music of Icelandic composer, Olafur Arnalds, as the soundtrack to a slow-moving series of photographs exploring natural landscapes by Kent-based photographer and musician, Molly Hollmann.

Arranged for piano quintet, Arnalds’ beautifully evocative music will accompany a sequence of beautiful photographs exploring the countryside, cloudscapes and beaches around the country, creating a tranquil, reflective space in which to escape the demands of the everyday. Music includes the theme to the ITV series, ‘Broadchurch,’ and pieces from albums including ‘For Now I am Winter’ and ‘Living Rooms Songs.’

The music will be performed by Deputy Director of Music, Dan Harding (piano) with four student chamber musicians from the University Sinfonia. Admission is free, and the event will last forty minutes; more details can be found online.

U.N.I Protect active bystander workshop

Have you ever been in a situation where you thought someone needed help, but you didn’t know what to do?

U.N.I Protect training can help you recognise harmful attitudes and behaviours linked to domestic and/or sexual victimisation. The training equips you with information, skills and confidence about what bystanders are and what role they can play in reducing sexual and domestic abuse. It empowers you to intervene and take action safely, helping you to keep other people safe in the process.

We are running a 1.5 hour U.N.I Protect workshop as part of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week. The workshop will take place on Monday 4 February at 14.00 in Keynes Seminar Room 12. All students are welcome to attend and everyone who attends will receive 5 Employability Points. You can find out more information and sign up via Study Plus (module KE148).

Further information about the course can also be found on the Student Services website.

Teaching Sustainability: Sustainable teaching

Registration is now open for a one-day event taking place on Friday 1st March in Keynes College focused on sustainability in the curriculum. Hosted by William Rowlandson (SECL) and Catherine Morris (Sustainability team) the event is open to academic teaching staff and students although interested staff from professional services department are welcome to attend.

Following on from the University’s commitment to embed sustainability into all areas of operation, this 1-day event will feature speakers from across the sector giving insight into how these issues have been addressed at different Universities. This will cover a wide range of approaches from creation of stand-alone sustainability modules, incorporating sustainability topics into existing teaching and utilising pedagogy to embed sustainability skills.

This will be followed by opportunities for students and staff to look at ways these approaches can be employed at Kent, and to begin the process of co-creation of curriculum content.

More information and links to registration can be found here

Adverse weather/snow update for students

As we approach a possible period of adverse weather in Kent over the next few weeks, here’s a timely reminder of the University’s snow policy for both the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

The University recognises that staff and students may face difficulties attending the University and returning home during periods of adverse weather conditions and major travel disruption.

We do our best to ensure that disruption caused to our services remains minimal whilst at the same time protecting the health and safety of all our staff, students and visitors to campus.

In the event of adverse weather or major transport disruption you should:

  • make every effort to attend teaching classes if possible and safe to do so;
  • assess the risk in travelling and not undertake journeys if you consider them to be unsafe;
  • Let your academic school know if you are likely to be delayed or are unable to travel.

Your academic school will inform you if any part of your teaching has been cancelled.

Our Estates Travel and Transport team provide information on planning your journey should you be in need of assistance – https://www.kent.ac.uk/transport/planning.

The University will not normally close, but there may be circumstances in which a reduction to ‘essential services only’ is declared either at Canterbury, Medway or both.

This will result in all teaching being cancelled and the closure of the majority of University services while a core group of essential service staff focus on safety, security and looking after the needs of those of you who live on campus.

Should that happen, we will inform you by email and by updates to the University’s News Centre – http://www.kent.ac.uk/news/.

If you have any queries relating to this policy, please discuss them with your academic school.

Students needed for a new series of films

We’re looking for undergraduate students to interview on film about their time at Kent. We’re particularly interested in students who are from either France, Spain, Germany, Greece, Italy or Romania. Participants will be asked a series of questions which they will see before the day and the final films will be used to help prospective students feel confident about applying to study at Kent.

Filming will take place on the Canterbury campus at the end of March (exact date TBC) and students will receive a £10 Amazon voucher as a thank you.

If you interested in being involved or have any questions about the filming, please send an email to marketingoffice@kent.ac.uk
