Take your laptop, tablet, bag or phone with you if you need a break while studying.

In common with many other HE institutions, this does mean that we are no longer going to produce the KENT Staff magazine in print. The last few years have seen a decline in its popularity and we now have so many online alternatives we felt the time was right.

Sunshine. Flowers. Shorts. Bikinis. All signs that summer is just around the corner. You may have already planned your summer holiday, but are you really ready to don that swimming costume just yet?
Kent Sport is offering members an incredible opportunity to win a personalised six-week support and training programme to help tone up those areas that winter has tried to cover. Participants will be training one-to-one focusing on each individual needs and fitness levels in Kent Sport’s very own fitness suite.
Last year’s Fit 4 the Beach winner, Dr Rachel McCrea said, “This has been the most amazing experience. I have lost 4kg (so far) and it has transformed not only my fitness levels, but the activity levels of the whole family. We run twice a week, go on a family swim once a week and I go to the gym once a week. I am signing up for my first 10km run later in the year to set myself a target to work towards.”
Student and staff Kent Sport members along with public members are all invited to apply. All you have to do is complete the application form and return it to the fitness suite in the Sports Centre or email it to instructor Darius explaining why you want to get fit this summer.
The Kent Sport Health and Fitness Team will select the lucky participants. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 5 May 2015.

The Tonbridge Centre summer programme of short courses is now available. From Ancient Greek to The Beats, the programme offers study days, workshops and short courses in wide ranging subjects including the Classics, Geology, Creative Writing, History, Literature, Music and Politics & International Relations. The university is pleased to be offering a Study Day on ‘Huguenots and Walloons: immigrants in South-East England’ by Dr Gill Draper at its Tonbridge Centre, to coincide with the opening of a new Huguenot Heritage Centre in the summer 2015 in Rochester High Street.

We have some exciting plans coming up during this summer to further enhance the study environment and the look of the Drill Hall Library!
After the exams we will begin adding more Silent Study spaces with new look desk partition screens and table layout. We will also be creating more Group Study rooms with flexible furniture and technologies that will be ideal for working together in small groups.
We will also carry out some essential maintenance from end of June to freshen up the look of the library by laying down a brand new carpet starting from the Group Study Zone, and moving some shelving by integrating the Law Books (Dewey shelf marks 340-349) amongst the rest of the main collection. We will try and keep interruptions to a minimum and while works are going on extra staff will be around to help you.

You can register your module preferences via SDS.
If you do not submit your module preferences by 9am on 30 March it is unlikely that you will be successful in gaining a place on any module with limited spaces.
Modules with limited spaces will be allocated fairly and transparently, after Online Module Registration closes, by a random selection process.

We are delighted to announce that next Tuesday 31 March at 6:30pm there will be a free screening of the movie Carry Greenham Home at the Gulbenkian Cinema as part of the Fifty Years of Feminism Film Season.
The film will end with a discussion panel including Laura Hart and Anne Logan (SSPSSR), chaired by Elizabeth Cowie (School of Arts).
Filmed by Amanda Richardson and Beeban Kidron, now Baroness Kidron, over seven months at the Greenham Common women’s peace camp set up to oppose the siting of Cruise Missiles nearby – an occupation that lasted 19 years, – Carry Greenham Home shows the direct action taken to disrupt activities at the USAF base in Greenham. Giving a much fuller picture of what life was like than the fragmented and distorted news reports at the time, it shows the processes underlying the women’s decisions, the influence of outside forces, and the verve and style with which they developed their own brand of non-violent direct action, as well as their struggle to forge new values and ways of living in a non-hierarchical community. We see the difficulties of camp life, and the women’s feelings of anger, but also shows moments of great joy and laughter.
A new round of European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is coming on stream at the end of March 2015. ERDF will flow via the Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), for Kent this will be via the South East LEP (SELEP). Kent Innovation & Enterprise (KIE) has been directly involved in the development of the ERDF strategy for SELEP and early information from the SELEP is that expressions of interest will be invited at the end of March.
There will be new opportunities in the 2014-2020 programme for activities focusing on higher level skills, social innovation and the low carbon economy with Universities in a strong position to exploit this new funding stream.
KIE will be holding an ERDF Workshop on Monday 30th March 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. in Keynes Seminar Room KS16 to outline SELEP’s commitment to supporting ERDF and also to update you on the funding call and the process for applying for funding.

KTV has received international recognition for one of its student drama productions, ‘Inside Cleopatra’. The film was awarded an Honourable Mention in the Student Film-maker category at the inaugural San Francisco Film Festival. ‘Inside Cleopatra’ is a five episode long student mini-series in which a university student accepts a challenge to defy the normal relationship conventions with all five of his classmates. He is forced to face his inner demons as he goes too far.
