Work Experience with Channel 4

4Talent, Channel 4’s in-house recruitment group, has contacted the University to offer a range of opportunities for anyone interested in a career in the media. The deadlines for applications are difference for each scheme, so if you are interested do make sure to check the details carefully.


Production Training Scheme

Twelve month placement opportunities are available amongst a variety of independent production companies across the UK in cities such as Bristol, Belfast and Glasgow. There are sixteen spaces available and two streams to apply for, as either a Researcher or a Production Coordinator. The scheme is particularly aimed at people with disabilities, from BAME communities or disadvantaged backgrounds, because these groups are currently underrepresented in the television industry. These are paid opportunities, and offer an entry level role for those with less than 12 months experience in production.

Pop Ups – Apprenticeships

We will be on the road in June to talk to people about apprenticeship opportunities at Channel 4 in different departments such as Sales, HR, and IT for example. This will be a day filled with networking, workshops and opportunities to ask our current apprentices lots of questions! We will be in London on the 21st June, Manchester 29th June and Glasgow 6th July.

 Work Experience

We run three cohorts of work experience per year, each hosting twenty individuals in different departments around Channel 4 for a week! This is a fantastic entry level opportunity to get a taster of Channel 4. We also pay all travel, lunch and accommodation costs (if necessary) to allow more people to take part!

  • Cohort 1: 17th – 21st July
  • Cohort 2: 23rd – 27th Oct
  • Cohort 3: 27th – 1st Dec

Study Plus – Employability Skills in the Summer Term

Study Plus courses are offered by the University, free of charge, to give you the opportunity to explore different areas and skills alongside your degree. They are not credit-bearing, but let you explore new areas, develop new skills and enhance those you already have, and to get more from your time here at Kent. There are several Study Plus courses running during the Summer term that may be of interest to anyone looking to develop their employability skills.


Employability Skills

Start date: Wednesday 17 May (Week 26)
End date: Wednesday 14 June (Week 30)
Time: 17:00-19:00
Number of hours: 10 hours (5 x 2 hour sessions)
Employability Points: 50 points maximum (based on 100% attendance)

This practical course is suitable for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Build a great CV
  • Develop and manage your ‘own brand’ via social media
  • Explore job hunting methods
  • Practice interview techniques
  • Develop key technical and social skills

All sessions will be workshop-based and will take place in a computer suite, providing participants with practical opportunities each week.

Partner Schools’ Teaching Experience Scheme

The Partnership Development Office, in conjunction with the University’s partner secondary schools, would like to introduce you to an exciting teaching experience scheme that we are piloting from September 2017, exclusively for Kent students.

The Partner Schools’ Teaching Experience Scheme has been designed to allow Kent students, who have an interest in entering the teaching profession, a unique insight into teaching, by offering training and paid work opportunities in the classroom.

Part 1 – Students in their penultimate year of study can access paid School Experience Placements, supporting pupils in the classroom in one of the University’s partner secondary schools.

Stage 2 – Students in their final year of study can apply to take on a Direct-Entry Teaching Internship, receiving training and paid work delivering pre-written teaching materials to pupils in our partner schools.  If suitable trainee teacher vacancies arise within our partner schools during this year, this placement could lead to an offer of a salaried direct-entry teacher training position at the school upon graduation.

The Network Television Festival

The Network is a FREE intensive introduction to working in the TV industry, run by the world’s leading TV festival. If you’re looking to start a career in television, this is the scheme for you. You don’t need to have had any experience of working in television BUT you will have to demonstrate that you LOVE TV.

Earn one of the 60 places on The Network and you’ll spend 4 days in Edinburgh learning practical TV making skills from top programme makers, giving you a taster of what it’s really like to work in television. Mingle with the cream of the British TV industry and make loads of new contacts, whilst working with the teams behind shows like A Question of Sport, Sky News, Holby City and Blue Peter. You’ll also be paired with an industry mentor, and get access to exclusive alumni events and job placements.

Volunteering Opportunity: Oral History Volunteers at the RAF Museum

The Royal Air Force Museum is looking to recruit a number of Oral History Volunteers, to take part in their project to record and preserve the stories of those who experienced historic RAF Hendon and the surrounding Colindale area.

Volunteers will complete a training course delivered by the Oral History Society, and will be speaking to members of the public in the area and carrying out interviews with them. This is an extremely good opportunity for anyone interested in oral history to obtain some highly prized training and real-life research experience.

First World War Schools Project Ambassadors

The School of History is currently looking for History / Military History / American Studies students currently in their first or second year of study (or those staying on at Masters level) to join the History Ambassador Scheme for the First World War Schools Project, and would like to invite you to apply. Although we welcome applicants with an interest in any area of history, we would particularly like to hear from those of you with an interest, or who are studying, any aspect of the First World War.

The First World War Schools Project aims to bring schools and academic departments in the humanities at the University of Kent together to commemorate the centenary of the war. Supported by the Partnership Development Office and the Gateways to the First World War research centre, the project intends to encourage school students to learn more about the war, in a variety of ways and through different subject areas, to raise aspiration, attainment, and awareness of the conflict.

The History Ambassador Scheme is made up of several paid roles, with responsibilities ranging from assisting with campus visits and tours, working closely with small groups of students in schools, to helping to deliver a range of sessions, over a period of time, about the First World War. In the first instance, you will have the opportunity to support a range of summer activities during late June and early July. Thereafter, there will be the opportunity to work on a variety of events during the next academic year. Even if you cannot attend the summer events please do still consider applying. There will also be opportunities to work as an ambassador for the School of History more broadly, on Open Days, Visit Days etc.

 As a History Ambassador you will develop invaluable transferable skills that will assist you in getting a job after you graduate, particularly if you are interested in pursuing a career in teaching. Paid work – Street Promotions team with Canterbury Tales

Over at Kent Union’s Jobshop, paid jobs in the Street Promotions team of the Canterbury Tales attraction in Canterbury are currently being advertised:

This role will support our marketing team with the selling and promotion of the much-loved Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction.

Mainly working outdoors in the historical City of Canterbury and the surrounding areas, you’ll be the first point of contact to our guests; informing them about our experience and assisting visitors with their enquiries.  You won’t need to be an expert on Chaucer but an interest in the subject is essential.

An outgoing personality, confidence and great work ethic are essential attributes of the role.

This role may also help to build relationships with local hotels and accommodation providers and require travelling in and around Canterbury City Centre on foot.

Volunteering: Exhibition Guide at the Royal Engineers Museum

Are you out-going and love meeting people? You could be just the person we are looking for to greet and offer visitors further information about the temporary exhibition at the Museum this summer.

‘The Mechanicals’ temporary exhibition will be at the Museum from 25th July – 3rd September. Your role would involve meeting and greeting visitors to the exhibition, explaining about the exhibits and assisting the Learning Team with the activities for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition consists of hand-crafted automata that are displayed alongside hands-on exhibits that show the basic mechanisms involved in making the automata work, simplifying the principles behind drives, pulleys, ratchets and levers. The exhibition is accompanies by family friendly activities, creating simple machines inspired by the Mechanicals.
