Stagecoach changes to bus fares

From Sunday 28 April Stagecoach are changing the price of some of their bus tickets.

Changes to fares that affect the University of Kent are listed in the table below:

Don’t forget that it is cheaper to purchase bus tickets on the Stagecoach bus app. Load and pay for your tickets and then activate them when you get on the bus.

New Unibus design

Have you spotted the new Unibus design yet? The buses are gradually being updated to the new design with the first buses now on the road.

The green Unibuses were first introduced in September 2013. The Unibuses run on biofuel, which is a sustainable fuel manufactured from used cooking oil and waste fat sourced from the UK food industry.

Stagecoach discounted bus journeys within Canterbury

University of Kent staff and students can purchase discounted bus tickets within the Canterbury megarider zone on day and week tickets.

Show your staff or student KentOne card to the driver to receive the discounted prices. You can pay for your ticket with cash, contactless card or via a smartphone payment such as Apple Pay.

Christmas shopping by bus

Arriva (West Kent area)
Catch the Arriva Sapphire 700 bus to Bluewater Shopping Centre from Chatham rail station. Bluewater has over 300 shops, over 50 places to eat and even ice skating over the Christmas period! Arriva 700 bus timetable.

Take the 132 Arriva bus to Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre from Chatham rail station. Hempstead Valley has over 50 shops, restaurants and cafes. Arriva 132 bus timetable.

Stagecoach (East Kent area)
Canterbury city centre
has plenty of shops and restaurants to explore. Catch the Uni1 or Uni2 Many shops in Canterbury. Stagecoach unibus usual timetable (until 15 December 2018). Unibus winter break timetable (16 December 2018- 12 January 2019).

Or you can catch the number 8 ‘Breeze’ service from Canterbury to Westwood Cross shopping Centre in Broadstairs. Westwood Cross has a large range of shops and restaurants to choose from. 8 Breeze timetable.

If you have a Unirider bus ticket or staff South East Megarider ticket, these journeys can be taken for free within your bus ticket.

Bus apps and mobile ticketing

Did you know that Stagecoach and Arriva have bus apps with live bus updates and mobile ticketing?  Stagecoach buses operate in Kent and East Sussex (including Canterbury campus) and Arriva buses operate in Medway, Kent and East Sussex (including Medway campus).

Stagecoach student Unirider ticket

The cheapest way for Canterbury students to travel around the local area is the Stagecoach Unirider, which allows unlimited travel across Kent and East Sussex. The Unirider ticket is valid for the academic year and the discount is exclusive to University of Kent students.

For the first two weeks of term, the Unirider will be available to buy from the Unibus parked on the lawn outside the Registry building on the Canterbury Campus between 10:00 and 16:00. It is also available to buy online from the Stagecoach website.

Remember to purchase up to and including 1 October for the early bird discount of £180 for the academic year. This is a saving of 77% on the public price. After the 1 October, the price will change to £255 for the academic year.

Stagecoach tickets cheaper on the app

Buying Stagecoach dayrider and megarider tickets is now cheaper on the app.

You can save up to 7.5% by buying all dayrider and megarider tickets in advance on the app, rather than in person on the bus. For example the Southeast dayrider will remain £7.00 on the bus, however, it will only be £6.80 through the app.

The University of Kent discounted dayrider and megarider week tickets are also cheaper on the app. The Canterbury dayrider discounted ticket is £3.10 on the bus or £2.90 on the app.

You can buy tickets up to three months in advance, then simply activate them on the days you wish to travel. Payment can be made securely with card, PayPal, Apple Pay, or Android Pay.

For staff and students, however, the cheapest option is a bus pass. Students are able to purchase the Student Unirider online now from the Stagecoach website. The Unirider bus pass will also be available to purchase from the bus located on campus from Arrivals Weekend for 2 weeks.

Staff are eligible for either the Canterbury or Southeast Megarider at a reduced rate. Using the Southeast Megarider, staff can travel around Kent and East Sussex for as little as £1.45 a day.

How far can your Stagecoach bus pass take you?

Did you know that Student Unirider bus tickets and staff South East Megarider tickets are valid for any Stagecoach bus in Kent and East Sussex? See the full map for how far you can travel on your bus pass.

Canterbury is one of Stagecoach’s main bus stations and therefore connects many different towns in Kent, making it easy to explore the area. This includes coastal towns like Margate, Ramsgate and Sandwich.

Remember that these tickets are available to all staff and students- not only Canterbury students and staff.

Stagecoach Price Changes

Unibuses not serving bus stops along Parkwood Road

Unibuses will not be serving bus stops along Park Wood road from Monday 23 June to Tuesday 24 June. This is due to urgent repairs and cabling works which need to be carried out.

All car parks coming off Park Wood road will still be accessible and the alternative route will be signposted.
