Cycle Hire and Dr Bike- Canterbury and Medway

Cycle hire

January cycle hire dates are this weekend, 13-14 January 2018, 10.00-16.00 from the Cycle Hub by the Pavilion.

Hire a bicycle complete with lights, lock and a bell for only £30 per term.

Chris and his team at ByCycle are continuing the excellent services on campus provided by CyclingAge, working with the Transport Team, Estates Department.

You can hire a bicycle at Medway campus from Liberty Quays, please ask at reception.

Dr Bike free bike checks

Dr Bike is at the Cycle Hub in Canterbury each Wednesday during term time to check and adjust your bike for free.

Dr Bike returns to Medway Thursday 18 January outside the Rochester Building. Check for updates on twitter @unikent_travel on the day.

 

Campus Shuttle reminders

The Campus Shuttle is a free service exclusively for University of Kent students and staff, for travel between the Medway and Canterbury campuses.

The service is not to be used for journeys between Liberty Quays and Medway campus. If you want to travel between Liberty Quays and Medway campus you can catch the 191 bus, which is included if you purchase the discounted Arriva student bus ticket.

To guarantee a seat on the Campus Shuttle please ensure you book a seat online to guarantee your travel www.kent.ac.uk/campus-shuttle

If there are spaces available you can board the service without booking by showing your Kent One card.

If you no longer need to travel on the service, please cancel your booking online in advance so others can book onto the service. If cancelling on the day, contact the transport team.

To start with, your Student Saver bus pass can take you around Chatham, so you can easily get to:

Dockside Outlet Centre

which has some interesting has some to mill around, the Cadbury’s outlet shop is an absolute must for chocolate lovers out there! It also has some pretty decent shops for your University needs such as Denby if you are still in need for cutlery, plates and other kitchen/dining essentials and the Range for any stationary needs.

The Pentagon shopping centre

in Chatham too if you haven’t been yet has some of your classic high street stores such as Boots, Foot Locker, JD Sports and more.

Our academic discounted bus passes aren’t just for use in only Chatham, they’re valid for our whole south east region so we’ve taken the liberty to find some great places around Kent you can get to with your pass to do a bit of shopping:

Bluewater

has most shops you could really want, with Topshop/Topman, River Island, Footasylum, Fred Perry, H&M, JD Sports, Missguided, New Look, The North Face and loads more!

Simply get on the Arriva Sapphire 700 bus which features eco-leather seats, USB charging points and free wi-fi!

Hempstead Valley

has some pretty cool stores such as JD, select and New Look as well as places to eat like Friendly Phil’s Diner, Nando’s and Subway. The 132 bus will take you there.

Fremlin Walk

in Maidstone is home to all your high street essentially such as Topshop/Topman, H&M, Office, New Look/New Look Men and River Island to name but a few. You could also grab a few bits in Maidstone’s shopping centre The Mall, too! Hop on the Arriva Sapphire 101 bus for Maidstone.


Nights out

Whether you’re into casual drinks or clubbing into the early hours there’s no need to fret as Arriva have you covered. Our specially discounted bus pass for the academic year not only takes you from your accommodation into University but is also valid throughout our whole South East region too. We’ve done our research (thank us later!) and found the best routes for you to enjoy the nightlife that Kent has to offer you.

Maidstone

boasts a cracking weekend nightlife, with clubs such as:

There are also great pubs and bars if you don’t fancy the club.

The last bus home from Maidstone back to Chatham is at 23:10 on a Friday and 00:10 on Saturday night. Anyone looking to stay out all night the first bus back on a Saturday morning is as 06:46 from Maidstone East Train station, with Source bar open until 5am.

Take the Arriva Sapphire 700 bus to Bluewater where there are some really great places you can go to eat and if you have an NUS card there are these exclusive discounts you can get, though we recommend verifying this discount with the restaurant before ordering!

Arriva discounted bus tickets

We work with Arriva bus company to provide highly discounted bus tickets for students and staff.

The annual student and staff tickets allow travel on any Arriva bus all over Medway, Kent and East Sussex. The student annual ticket is £140 which works out as only 39p per day!

You can purchase the tickets online using the promotional code found on our website or from the Arriva bus on campus today (20 September 2017) outside the Student Hub.

Pick up timetables, ask any questions and purchase your ticket from the Arriva bus on campus next to the fresher’s fair.

Canterbury and Medway car park and road disruptions

1 July- Canterbury Open Day

We are expecting a large number of vehicles to campus for the open day on Saturday. We are not aware of any other large events with the exception of the usual Saturday park run.

2-3 July- Pavilion car park

Reminder that the Pavilion car park will be closed for a cycling event. This is approximately 70 bays. Please ensure you remove your vehicle from the Pavilion car park by 22.00 Saturday 1 July. The car park should be reopened at 11.00 Monday 3 July.

3-8 July – Giles Lane part road closure- South East Water

South East Water are required to close a small section of Giles Lane adjacent to Woodlands Way for approximately 5 days. A diversion will be in place along University road. Rothford car park will remain open but will not be accessible from the main campus. It will be accessible from Giles Lane via St Thomas Hill/ Whitstable road.

4-5 July- Medway New Kent Road repairs

There will be some disruption to New Kent Road while repairs are made to the road, including the junction with Central Avenue. The contractors will carry out their own traffic management to ensure traffic flows.

Present- 15 September- Giles lane car park (section on right hand side as you drive in located behind Woolf)

The section of Giles Lane blue zone car park located behind Woolf College remains closed for the coach and minibus park to assist Kent Hospitality, Enrolment Management Services and Partnership Development Office with conference guests and school visits. This is approximately 40 bays.

Medway Dr Bike- free bike check up!

Dr Bike is visiting the Pembroke campus next Thursday (15 June 2017). Please note this is a change of date (previously Thursday 8 June). This is the last Dr Bike visit of this academic year.

Get your bike checked and adjusted for free by a trained bicycle mechanic. Dr Bike will be located in front of Rochester Building between 11:30 and 14:30.

Please check the @unikent_travel  twitter feed (which can also be seen on the Transport News webpage) for confirmation on the day. This service is provided by the Estates department.

Missed Dr Bike at Medway in October?

Dr Bike is back at Medway campus on Thursday 10 November 2016!

Find Dr Bike outside the Rochester building (on the grass to the left of the main entrance) and get a free check-up and any minor adjustments made to your bicycle.

Come along between 11:30 and 14:30 to get your bike checked over for free by trained bicycle mechanics.

Let us know if you would like Dr Bike to make a more regular appearance at Medway.

New card access cycle shelter at Medway campus

We are pleased to announce that the new cycle shelter at Medway campus now has card access controls. This means that your KentOne card can now be programmed to let you in the cycle shelter, providing a lockable place to store your bicycle.

The new card access cycle shelter is located behind the Rochester building. The cycle shelter design includes wooden panelling to fit in with surrounding structures and clear panels as an added security measure. CCTV is also in operation in this area.

To gain access on your KentOne card, email transport@kent.ac.uk with the number on the back of your KentOne card and we will arrange for card access to be given.

New card access cycle shelter- Medway campus

From listening to feedback from cyclists at Medway we have decided to install card access cycle shelters at the Medway campus.

Between Monday 4 July and Tuesday 12 July, works will be carried out to transform the cycle loops by Rochester building to a covered card access cycle shelter.

Please use the cycle loops at the bottom of the steps by the Medway building while the work is being carried out.
