The new Lunchtime Concert series begins in robust fashion on Wednesday 8 October, as pianist Helen Crayford explores ragtime piano music, including music by Scott Joplin and Fats Waller – all in period costume!

Step back in time in the Colyer-Fergusson Hall at 1.10pm; admission is free, with a suggested donation of £3. And fear not: the concert will end at 1.50pm to allow time to get to 2pm commitments.

Sections along the A2 between Brenley Corner (where the road meets the M2) and Wincheap (for the A28) will be rebuilt, which will involve nine weekend closures of the coastbound carriageway.

The coastbound carriageway will be fully closed from 8pm each Friday until 6am each Monday from 3 October to 1 December; weather permitting.

A signed diversion will be in place via the A299 and A256 during the closures. For visitors to the University of Kent the diversion is:

• Take the exit for Whitstable /B2205/Canterbury/A290
• Go through 1 roundabout
• At the next roundabout take 3rd exit onto A290
• Continue on A290 for 4 miles
• Turn left onto University Road, postcode CT2 7LZ

As this is one of the main diversions given by the Highway Agency, please ensure you give plenty of time for travel as there are expected delays.

This Welcome Week new and returning University of Kent students were asked to share their ‘selfies’ as part of the University’s 50^th anniversary celebrations.

The competition was run via the University’s Instagram channel which received over 150 entries with the hashtag #HelloKent50.

All the entries were of a high standard making it difficult for representatives from the University and Kent Union to choose a winner.

After significant deliberation, Mona Mohsin a third year student from Kent Business School was chosen as the winner for her colourful photo incorporating the Kent Wheel – a 33m high ferris wheel currently on the Canterbury campus for the University’s 50^th anniversary.

Mona will receive an iPad Mini for her winning entry which can be viewed on Flickr.

The competition was a joint initiative between the University of Kent and our students’ union, Kent Union.

We are looking for current University of Kent students to take part in a telephone fundraising campaign to raise money for the Kent Opportunity Fund.

This is an exciting and rewarding post; you will be an ambassador for the University, engaging alumni in conversation to update them on University news and activities, establish a good rapport and ask for donations.

As part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a placement has been specially created for a Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) student.

The successful student will help with the ’50 Years of Feminism Project’ during the 2014/15 academic year.

Throughout the anniversary year, this project will celebrate, showcase and disseminate the achievements of feminist academics at Kent in improving women’s rights and wellbeing through their research, scholarship, pedagogy and activism over the last four decades.

Postgraduate students from the School of Physical Sciences will host, for the first time, the 12th UK Planetary Forum Early Career Scientists’ Meeting on 19 and 20 February 2015.

The meeting will take place in the Ingram Building, School of Physical Sciences. It will include keynote talks from invited speakers presenting the latest advances in Planetary Sciences. Short talks given by PhD students presenting their current and future work and a poster session will span both days.

Additional activities, including a welcome dinner, prizes for the best poster presentation and guided tours in the Impact Lab will also take place. We wish to live video stream the proceedings across the SEPnet region which will be a valuable Kent contribution to the first year of GRADnet.

These meetings are included in the activities of the UKPF and are organised by Postgraduate Students and Post doctoral researchers for young scientists.

The aim is to gather the majority of PhD students who work in the broad field of Planetary Sciences. During this meeting young scientists who are at the beginning of their career will present their work and meet future collaborators.

No registration fee is required. Accommodation will be provided to all the participants.

Registration and abstract submission deadline: 19 January 2015.
