Kent Extra course – Recycling the Sunset

The aim of this Kent Extra course is to use cans to create a recycled sunset which is to be placed under the krit space in Architecture.

Students should expect to work with a number of students from different disciplines and work in a team to achieve the goal.

This course is a practical course and so students will be heavily involved in creating the sunset which we will display.

#Earbox – new Studio 3 Gallery and Music collaboration

We are very excited to be launching #EarBox, a new collaboration between the School of Arts Studio 3 Gallery and the Music Department, on Wednesday 28 January.

#EarBox is a series of events exploring the meeting-point between visual art and music, where visitors can experience the latest Studio 3 exhibition, or listen to the unfolding musical performance – or wander the new emotional landscape mapped by the intersection of art and music, where the experience of one medium informs and influences a response to the other.

The event next Wednesday will feature piano works by Debussy, John Cage, Chick Corea and Philip Glass; visitors can explore the paintings during the performance, or sit and listen to the music – admission is free.

This term’s exhibitions features an exploration of colour and form in paintings by Brian Rice, and sculpture by Richard Rome, and the music includes piano works performed by Deputy Director of Music Daniel Harding, as well as performances by University ensembles including the Chamber and Cecilian Choirs, the Wind Ensemble and the String Sinfonia.

Admission to all these events is free; make sure you’re following @Unikent_music or @Studio3Gallery for event details, or visit the Music department’s What’s On or the Studio 3 blog page to find out what’s coming up.

Sports coaching

Want to try something new in 2015? Why not get active and have fun with our coach-led sports sessions at Kent Sport.

We employ a ‘sport for all mentality’ and work hard to help encourage participation in sport and physical activity, regardless of playing standard or ability.

Our coach-led sessions are aimed at beginner to improver standard participants and aim to teach them the correct techniques for the fundamental skills of the sports we offer.

For more information on these sessions please visit the Kent Sport webpages or alternatively contact a member of our Sports Development team – sportsdevelopment@kent.ac.uk.

Enhancing students’ writing

New Royal Literary Fund (RLF) Writing Fellows for Kent students at Canterbury and Medway.

The Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS) in UELT is very pleased to announce the arrival of two Royal Literary Fellows: Tim Walker and Roopa Farooki at both the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Both Royal Literary Fellows bring a diverse background in writing to their work supporting and developing students’ academic writing at university.

Insights gained through narrative, travel writing, children’s literature and journalism are applied to some of the underlying issues of academic writing such as getting started on a text, clarity, structure and developing a distinctive ‘voice’.

Allia Wilson, Manager of the Student Learning Advisory Service, commented that the provision of two RLF Writing Fellows at Kent was ‘a unique opportunity for students at both Canterbury and Medway to benefit from the rich and dynamic experience of professional writers. Both Tim and Roopa have a wealth of expertise, and a passionate commitment to promoting good writing, that will really help our students’.

You can read more about Tim Walker and Roopa Farooki on the SLAS webpages.

Tim Walker will be based in the Student Learning Advisory Service in UELT, Canterbury where he will be happy to see students on a one to one basis to help them with their academic writing.

Fundraising UK Camp comes to Canterbury

Fundraising Camp is a one-day ‘unconference’-style event for fundraisers, the first series of its kind for fundraisers in the UK.

Spend a day learning, talking about and maybe even solving the issues and challenges you face in your fundraising. Learn from other fundraisers in your area, find out how they’ve dealt with similar problems, and share your experience.

No tents involved: make some useful contacts and maybe even enjoy a very practical day of sharing fundraising advice.

For more information and details about the day, visit the event webpage.

Producer to introduce screening of ‘Culture High’

We are delighted to announce a special screening of the documentary ‘Culture High’ on 27 January from 6pm.

The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Jason Reed, one of the producers and followed by the opportunity for audience discussion and reaction to the documentary.

Book now.

Journeying across the North American landscape, ‘The Culture High’ is a riveting documentary that tears into the very fibre of modern day marijuana prohibition to reveal the truth behind the arguments and motives governing both those who support and oppose the existing cannabis legislation.

Utilising the quirky yet profound nature of its predecessor, ‘The Union: The Business Behind Getting High’, ‘The Culture High’ raises the stakes with some of today’s biggest names, unprecedented access to footage previously unobtainable, and incredibly moving testimonials from both sides of the spectrum.

Featuring Richard Branson, Snoop Lion and Wiz Khalifa as well as former undercover agents, university professor, a slew of unforgettable characters from all points of view come together for an amusing yet insightful portrait of cannabis prohibition and the grasp it has on society as a whole.

Dir: Brett Harvey | UK / USA / Canada / Spain | 2014 | 120 mins | Richard Branson, Snoop Lion, Wiz Khalifa
