London St Pancras to Margate train journey inspires art work

Downloadable as an App, the work by composer/artist Claudia Molitor will also go on display at the Turner Contemporary 20 June – 13 September.

Informed by trains, journeying and the disconnect between looking at the passing landscape and hearing only the interior sounds of the carriage, the piece – titled Sonorama – is described as ‘filling the gap between the visual and sonic realities of train travel’.

Imagining the journey as the ‘score’, Claudia Molitor’s  cycle of works, collected interviews, readings and British Library archive material respond to the social history of the route. The tracks cover topics as diverse as visio-centricity, Roman history and hop-picking – all relating to a different point or area between London St Pancras and Margate.

The App, which features contributions from flautist Jan Hendrickse, poet Lemn Sissay, saxophonist Evan Parker and writer Charlotte Higgins, will be free to download at the App store from 19 June – 30 September 2015.

Claudia Molitor lectures at the University’s School of Music and Fine Art.

Electrical shutdown this Saturday (20 June) – Canterbury campus

We are starting a high voltage electricity cable replacement programme at the Canterbury campus which is expected to take six months to complete. To enable this to happen, there will be a site electrical shutdown this Saturday 20 June from 07.00 to 13.00.

This will isolate all electrical supplies to all buildings apart from the following: Keynes, Keynes 2, Turing, Careers, Tanglewood, Oaks terminal room, Oaks Nursery, Olive Cottages, Woodlands, Rothford, Beverley Farm, Belmont, Highlands and Hilltops.

During the shutdown, there will be temporary electricity generation at Rutherford, Eliot, Darwin, Ingram, Stacey Telephone Exchange, Campus Watch, The Locke Building, CSR Radio and the Pumping Station.

Please can staff and residents ensure that all non-essential electrical equipment – for example, IT equipment and televisions – is switched off and unplugged before shutdown begins at 07.00. Any network faults resulting from the outage may not be fixed until Monday 22 June. University IT Services used from off campus should not be affected, but are ‘at risk’ of interruption.

Apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any queries, please contact the Estates Helpdesk on Ext 3209.

Mars: The Planet – how much do you know?

Rutherford Grass Roots Lecture:

Mars: The Planet – how much do you know?

On Wednesday 27 May at 6pm in Rutherford Lecture Theatre One, Rutherford College will be hosting a lecture being given by Professor Mark Burchell.

Space missions over the last 20 years have completely changed our knowledge of Mars. High resolution images taken from Mars orbit or from the various landers and rovers, provide a fascinating insight into Mars from its origin to the present day.

Professor Burchell (who is Professor of Space Science at the University of Kent and who provides the detailed lectures about Mars to the University’s undergraduate students), will provide an overview of what we know today about the “Red Planet”.

The lecture (organised in conjunction with the English Speaking Union) is free and open to all.

Kent Law Campaign Team takes part in the London Legal Walk 2015

On Monday 18th May 2015 over 8000 walkers took to the streets of London to take part in the annual London Legal Walk organised by the London Legal Support Trust.

The 10km walk takes place around central London starting at Carey Street, passing the Royal Courts of Justice, heading up The Mall, through the Horse Guards Parade towards Hyde Park. The walk was attended by senior members of the legal profession, including the Lord Chief Justice, the Master of the Rolls, the President of the Supreme Court, leaders of the Bar Council, the Law Society, as well as the Attorney General. Money raised through this event supports free legal advice charities in London and the South East.

Natalie Salunke, Emily Smith, Callum Borg, Daniel Shaw, Simone Kraemer, Hannah Bignell and Felicity Clifford joined the walk in aid of the Kent Law Campaign and so far have raised £625 (including Gift Aid and the University match) for the Campaign.

You can still support the team by donating online: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/KentLawCampaign2015.
