Almost Human: 2016 Stirling Lecture

The Stirling Lecture for 2016 will be given by Professor Lee Berger (University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa) on Tuesday 8 November.

He will present two of his most recent discoveries, which are changing our understanding of the human evolutionary story and for which he was recently named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people.

As a professor of human evolution and National Geographic Explorer, Professor Berger has been searching South Africa and the Cradle of Humankind for over two decades for the fossil evidence of human evolution.

In the last ten years, he has discovered two of the most important new fossil human species: Australopithecus sediba (important for its combination of primitive and derived skeletal morphology) and Homo naledi (important for its combination of early human skeletal morphology yet with evidence for deliberate disposal of its dead).

Professor Berger will speak about the discovery and challenging excavation of these important fossils and also how they are changing our understanding of the human evolutionary story.

The lecture will take place at 18.30 in Keynes Lecture Theatre 1, Canterbury campus. It will be preceded by a reception for School of Anthropology and Conservaton staff and students in Swingland at 16.30 and a public reception with fossil cast exhibiton in Keynes foyer at 17.30.

If you would like to submit a question for Professor Berger, please email events@kent.ac.uk, or tweet your question using #UniKentEvents

November’s pubTALK with special guest speakers

The Q-Step team are very excited to have special guest speakers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSH&TM) for November’s pubTALK.

On Thursday 3rd November, Richard Clarke and Rose Wilson will be discussing ‘the importance of the social sciences in vaccine uptake’.

Up until fairly recently women were broadly advised not to take medication during their pregnancy. This changed in 2009 when the influenza vaccination, and three years later the whooping cough vaccination, became widely recommended as effective means of protecting mothers during pregnancy, and infants shortly after birth, from potentially life threatening diseases. The change has presented a unique landscape for studying the concept of vaccine hesitancy and the reasoning behind why an individual may refuse a vaccine when offered.

Rosie and Richard are current PhD students associated with The Vaccine Confidence Project at LSH&TM. In this talk they will discuss some of the social science literature on vaccine hesitancy and talk about their current research into vaccine hesitancy during pregnancy. Rosie from an anthropology, qualitative perspective and Richard from a psychology, quantitative perspective.

Please arrive at The Jolly Sailor from 19.00 for a 19.30 start. As always, the evenings are free to attend (although you do need to pay for your own drinks!) and all are welcome to stay behind to continue the discussions afterwards. The Jolly Sailor also offer a great new menu for those who would also like some food. Anyone is welcome to attend so please feel free to pass on the information to other people who may be interested in coming along or you can get up to date information via our website or mailing list.

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Business in Kent after Brexit

Kent Business School (KBS) at the University, is inviting businesses from across the county to a lecture on the effects of Brexit on companies in Kent. Regional businesses will have the opportunity to hear leading experts on EU relations and international business at the University give their take on the latest developments after the EU referendum.

Professor Richard Whitman, Professor of Politics and International Relations at POLIR, will outline the expected political tug-of-war between the UK and the EU following Theresa May’s announcement that Article 50 will be triggered no later than March 2017.

In his talk he will attempt to unpick some of the recent political statements made and look at what efforts are required to make Brexit work for both the UK and the EU. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities lying ahead? Can any predictions on outcomes be made? And what is happening behind the scene – the million-dollar question!

Dr Fragkiskos Filippaios, Reader in International Business at KBS, will put the wider political debate in a business context and discuss how Kent businesses may be positively and negatively impacted.

The event, on Thursday, October 20, starts at 17.30 with the chance for informal networking and refreshments. This event is the first of the Business Soundbites series at KBS where academics and students come together with businesses, not-for-profit organisations and government bodies to share knowledge and experiences. Two short lectures on important trends in business and the UK economy will be followed by drinks and music. All are welcome.

Meningitis symptoms and vaccine

Leading UK charity Meningitis Now is calling for all first year university students to get the lifesaving Men ACWY vaccine this winter. If you haven’t had the vaccine, contact the University Medical Centre or your GP.

The charity, which launches its Student Awareness Week on 24 October, will be drawing attention to the worryingly low uptake of the vaccine leaving thousands of students at risk from this deadly disease.

Following an increase of 809% in meningococcal (group W) meningitis cases in the past five years, government launched a vaccination programme to protect those aged 17-18 and first year students up to 25 through GPs and clinics.
