Sustainable food

Launch of a new sustainable food strategy

The University of Kent recognises its responsibility to carry out its procurement activities in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, and the considerable influence we have in using our buying power to encourage healthy and sustainable food production and consumption. With this in mind, the University launches its first sustainable food strategy on 1 October 2018.

The strategy is a road map for increasing the sustainability of our food offering from field to fork and beyond, and has been co-written by Kent Hospitality, Kent Sport, The Gulbenkian and the Estates Department, along with the Kent Union Environment Officer and student and staff reps. The strategy supports the University’s aim to embed the Sustainable Development Goals into our operations.

Highlights include:

  • Reducing overall meat consumption across our campuses and improving the welfare standard of the meat we serve
  • Reducing the miles our fruit and veg travels and increasing the seasonality of our menus
  • Incorporating food grown on campus into our menus
  • Carrying out a full review of the amount of single-use disposables we get through
  • Pursuing options for food composting

Read the full strategy and find out more about sustainable food at the Sustainability web pages or email sustainability@kent.ac.uk.

Kent Law Fair offers excellent networking opportunity

Kent’s annual Law Fair on Wednesday 31 October offers an excellent opportunity for law students and non-law students to network with leading local, national and international law firms.

This year’s Fair, organised by members of Kent Student Law Society (KSLS), will be held from 1pm – 4pm in Eliot Hall on Kent’s Canterbury campus.

Law firms attending include Magic Circle firm Clifford Chance together with:

  • Brachers LLP
  • Cripps LLP
  • Dentons
  • DGB Solicitors
  •  Furley Page Solicitors
  •  Hatten Wyatt
  • Herbert Smith Freehills
  • Martin Tolhurst Solicitors
  •  Thomson Snell & Passmore
  •  Trowers and Hamlins

The Fair is open to all Kent students with an interest in pursuing a legal career. Anyone thinking of attending is encouraged to attend a preparatory talk in the preceding week on Tuesday 23 October. Philippa Ward, a Corporate Solicitor at Pinsent Masons, will be sharing advice on how to maximise the opportunity to network and explore career options. Confirmation of the time and location of the talk will be posted on KSLS’s Facebook page later next month.

Law Fair organiser Nikoletta Komiati said: ‘As well as being a great networking opportunity, our 2018 Law Fair is the ideal way to gain an insight into vacation schemes and training contracts. It’s an event not to be missed.’

KSLS is one of six student law societies at Kent Law School. Its primary aim is to support students exploring the option of a career in law as a solicitor. The Society holds talks, CV and interview workshops, and seminars with professionals from different careers and backgrounds throughout the term. It also offers a broad range of social events, including the Annual Law Dinner in February where students can wine and dine with legal professionals.

College Colour Run

On Saturday 29 September the University’s College Committees have organised the  first University of Kent College Colourthon.

The event has been organised to raise money for the charity, Mary’s Meals, who provide life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest children every school day.

The hope is that the event will build relationships within the colleges and wider university community, encourage new and returning students to make friends, new memories and have fun while raising money for charity!

Whether you aim to test your marathon skills and represent your college by going for gold, or whether you are just looking for a fun, inviting experience in-between the introductory lectures and socialising. Everyone is welcome to take part.

Kent ranked 11th in UK for Law in latest Times Good University Guide

Kent Law School’s strong performance in national and international league tables continues with news that it has been ranked 11th out of 102 UK institutions for law in The Times Good University Guide 2019

In addition to climbing three places from last year’s subject ranking, the Law School is ranked 8th in the UK for the quality of its research and 14th for student experience. The ranking, published yesterday, also takes into consideration student opinion on teaching quality, graduate job prospects and course entry standards.

Last month, the Law School was ranked amongst the top 100 law schools in the world in the 2018 Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The Law School is also currently ranked 50th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 and is among the top 150 law schools in the QS World University Rankings 2018.

Kent is a leading UK law school, ranked 13th in The Guardian University Guide 2019 for law and 18th in The Complete University Guide 2019. It is one of only 14 UK university law schools to be ranked in the top 20 of all three major UK league tables.

Head of Kent Law School Professor Toni Williams said: ‘As we begin our 50th anniversary celebrations, it is particularly gratifying to see Kent’s reputation as a leading UK law school endorsed in this latest league table ranking. Our top 20 ranking for student experience reflects the enormous efforts made by colleagues to ensure our students receive an intellectually challenging critical legal education within a supportive environment, enriched by world-leading socio-legal research.’
