Mikkel Zangenberg at Nordicana 2015

Dr Mikkel Zangenberg from the Department of Comparative Literature will be participating at Nordicana: Nordic Noir & Beyond, the UK festival of Scandinavian drama and fiction.

The event will be held over this weekend, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June.

The event plays host to stars from the Scandinavian television shows and crime fiction, including The Bridge’s Sofia Helin as well as Sofie Grabol, who played the iconic Sarah Lund in three seasons of The Killing.

Mikkel will participate in a panel on Sunday, alongside historians, linguists from UCL and the Nordic Film Festival, entitled ‘1864 as National “Wound”, Then and Now’, discussing the television series 1864, currently being shown on BBC4.

Mikkel will talk on the disastrous reception of the programme in Denmark, as opposed to the comparatively benign reception in the UK.

Dr Antônio da Silva on blended language learning

Dr Antônio da Silva from the Department of Hispanic Studies will be presenting a workshop as a guest speaker at the conference ‘Portuguese as a Global Language: Challenges and Opportunities in Teaching and Learning’.

The conference is part of the Routes into Languages consortium, an initiative of several universities working with schools and colleges to encourage people to study languages.

The conference will see a forum of university and secondary school specialists address aspects of Portuguese learning and teaching in the UK, including the teaching of pragmatics and Portuguese as a heritage language.

Antônio’s workshop is titled ‘Synchronous and Asynchronous Activities in Portuguese Language Teaching: Cinema, Blogs, Phones and Beyond’.

There has been much discussion around the incorporation of blended learning, that is interactive learning using media and technology, not only in language teaching but also in education in general.

This workshop will explore the advantages of embedding blended learning in the language teaching curriculum and how this offers possibilities for synchronous and asynchronous activities.

To illustrate such possibilities, some practical activities using cinema, blogs, phones, etc, will be developed and suggestions of resources and activities that can be explored as part of the teaching/learning process. The conference will be held on 30 June. Read more.

Job shadowing for staff

Job shadowing provides individuals with a unique opportunity to find out more about how other staff work and what their roles involve, and to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of other roles and functions across the University.

The Learning and Development team has been working in collaboration with Information Services to develop some online guidance for staff to support Job Shadowing.

This resource has application beyond the Job Shadowing initiatives in IS and is available across the University, with access to further information via the following Learning and Development Job Shadowing webpages.

The guidance complements and aligns with guidance in support of the University Reflect, Plan and Develop (RPD) Scheme. Read more.

We are looking for further case studies from a range of schools and departments to demonstrate the value and potential of Job Shadowing for professionals and career development, and we would encourage you to contact Learning and Development if you have anything to offer.

Please contact Ali Whelan, Learning & Development Adviser, A.Whelan@kent.ac.uk or a member of the Learning & Development team at ldev@kent.ac.uk.

The week begins on Sunday 7 June with the University Big Band at Deal Memorial Bandstand conducted by Ian Swatman and culminates on Saturday 13 June in a cconcert with the Chorus, Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir in the Colyer-Fergusson Hall, followed by cream teas on the Registry lawn.
