How students see our future ambitions

At the heart of the developing brand work is the need for us to embrace a bolder, more confident approach in how we present ourself to the world. Building out from the themes of Connection, Collaboration and Community is the sense that, since the University’s origins, we have all been united in the pursuit of progress.

We have a student-focused approach which is supportive, challenging and rewarding. Our research is driven by collaboration to create positive impact. All of this is underpinned by connections the enable new ideas across areas and a community spirit embodied by our alumni that last a lifetime.

Hearing from our students

This positive, outward-focused view of the world also reflects our growing global ambitions – and also resonates really closely with what our research shows us that younger generations of students in particular are looking for.

As part of this work we looked through the answers applicants gave as to why they applied for University so we could pick out common themes:

“To achieve aspirations which wouldn’t be possible without university”

“To enhance my education, giving me a platform to strive towards achieving my goals”

“I see it as my golden ticket to get closer to the future I have dreamed about since I was young”

“Dreaming big about my future – I need to bring my ideas and imagination to life”

“I want to reach my goals and change the situation at home so education is the key”

“I don’t just want to study to generate an income, but to make a change”

“To complete my dream to be a professor”

A diverse brand project group

We also gathered more in-depth feedback from students embedded in the brand project itself:

“The ideal University encourages ambition as it is an essential element for making change, especially when faced with change. It encourages students to find their own path to a future of positive change – ultimately if Kent is recognised for this encouragement, it can create an exciting atmosphere for students striving to make an impact in their chosen field” – Sabrina, Undergrad Student

“When my Masters course moved online due to Covid-19, I struggled to see how I could success ane became willing to settle for less in fear of failure. However, through the support my Division and Student Support, my confidence grew along with my skills and I am now on my first year of my PHD. Ambition has become a core descriptor when I characterise myself as without the determination and support of my teachers, member of staff, family and friends – and my own – I would not be where I am today. Without that ambition I would not be on my dream course, a work-study member of staff, a mentor to other PhD students through Kent Union’s Buddy scheme and so much more” – Caroline, PhD Student

Taken together this gives us a really strong base from which to develop our brand work – rooted in a positive, outward looking identity that brings together so many strands of that we do at Kent.
