Spring is here! Come along and catch-up with alumni and friends for the last Alumni Pub Night of the academic year. Find out what Kent graduates get up to after leaving University and to de-stress from exam season. First drink and hot snacks will be provided.

Alumni Pub Nights are a chance for Kent alumni and students to come together to socialise and network in a friendly local pub in Canterbury.

Kent Sport one month membership

One month membership offer this summer

The summer is finally here, so what better excuse is there to get out and explore the stunning Canterbury campus and the beautiful Kent countryside than with a one month membership at Kent Sport?

The opportunities to get active at Kent Sport are almost endless. Exclusive to this year, we’ve added three new grass tennis courts for all you Wimbledon fans, alongside the existing tennis and netball courts and three artificial pitches. For the explorers, we offer a range of high-quality bikes to hire for free through the Kent Sport Cycle Hub. Your membership also includes access to our modern sports facilities including the fitness suite**, squash courts, all outdoor facilities, all fitness and dance classes, plus free equipment hire.

Offer valid from 1 June to 1 September 2018 inclusive. Adults can get membership for just £35.50, while Juniors (anyone in full-time education and/or 16 to 18 years old) pay just £28. Under 16’s pay £3.90 per activity. *To apply for the junior rate please bring with you proof of full-time education (student card etc.). **Please note that some parts of the fitness suite will be closed for renovation during the summer period. Kerri Layton

SMFA EED graduate performing at legendary London jazz venue

SMFA BA (Hons) Event and Experience Design 2011 graduate, Kerri Layton is performing at legendary Pizza Express Cabaret venue, The Pheasantry (Chelsea), on Tuesday 17 July from 20.00.

The Pheasantry was nominated for Best Live Music Venue in the London Lifestyle Awards, and considered to be one of London’s major venues of New York-style jazz-singing, musical-theatre-influenced cabaret work.

Kerri is enjoying a successful career as a performer with her live band and as a solo artist, and heads up independent record label Dixiebird Records, which runs live music events all across the capital, featuring some of London’s finest musicians, as well as running her own Creative Event Consultancy.

Her EP Songs For A Rainy Day is produced by bandleader, saxophonist and composer, Mick Foster and is due for release in July 2018.

Colleagues are warmly invited to attend the Estates Showcase on Tuesday 26 June, in the Darwin Conference Suite from 10.00-15.00.

Kent Student Awards 2018 shortlist

We are proud to announce the 2018 Kent Student Awards shortlist.

The Kent Student Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution students make to the Kent student experience.

Our judges had the very difficult task of narrowing down over 250 excellent nominations to the following shortlist.

The winning students will be announced at the gala dinner on Friday 1 June.

The winner in each category will receive their very own brick in the University’s ‘Footsteps Path‘, a certificate and their achievement will be recognised on their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) when they graduate.

The awards are brought to you by Kent Union and the University of Kent.

SMFA shows

SMFA Postgraduate Presentations Wednesday 23 May

The annual School of Music and Fine Art (SMFA) Postgraduate Presentations take place on Wednesday 23 May in the Galvanising Shop Performance Space at Medway campus.

The Postgraduate Presentations are an excellent opportunity for SMFA to celebrate the successes of our postgraduates and the contribution they make to the life, work and academic community of the school.

The day will run from 10.30am until approximately 3pm and includes a range of presentations from students studying Music and Fine Art MA and PhD programmes, as well as a participatory tour of a Fine Art Degree showpiece from a MA Fine Art student.

There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions after each presentation and a lunch will be provided for presenters and the audience at which further discussion can take place.

Participants needed for study on biofeedback of eating behaviour

Researchers from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts are seeking participants to take part in a study relating to biofeedback of eating behaviour.

This study aims to investigate the interaction of users with biosensor driven feedback during the consumption of a small meal. Participants are required to take part in a single study session lasting no more than 60 minutes.

You will be asked to consume a selection of free food during the session, including pizza, jam sandwiches, yoghurt, apples and water. In return, you will receive a £10 Amazon e-voucher on the successful completion of the study session.

Please join us next Monday (21 May) at The Jolly Sailor, Canterbury for the last pubTALK of the academic year!

We are excited to welcome Professor Alex Stevens who will be joining us to discuss ‘Countering drug deaths’.

As usual, pubTALKs will be in the upstairs function room at The Jolly Sailor, Canterbury. Doors open at 19.00 for a 19.30 start and entry is free of charge. Everyone is encouraged to stay behind after the talks to continue the discussions for a drink or two!
