Learning and Teaching Network session – Curriculum Internationalisation

Colleagues are invited to attend the Learning & Teaching Network session taking place on Friday 26 January , 13.15-14.30 in the UELT Seminar Room, Canterbury.

Presented by Dr Anthony Manning the session will focus on Curriculum Internationalisation and how this can be embedded in your academic practice at module level. It will provide an opportunity to develop a shared understanding of what is meant by internationalising the curriculum and to reflect on aspects of internationalisation which are already present in your provision in relation to taught content, teaching approaches and assessment.

Throughout the session, examples of good practice will be shared and discussed. Time will be allocated for questions and to provide support to staff working on module specifications.

Only The Last time

Help to give up smoking

Sometimes there are things we really want to do but know they will be really hard, so it stops us even trying. Giving up smoking is one of those things. It can be easier with assistance or doing it with a friend.

NHS Stop Smoking will be on campus running clinics on Monday afternoons for seven weeks from 8 January 2018. The clinics will be held in Occupational Health in Keynes College.  You can have a 1:1 session or you can come along with a friend or two. NHS Stop Smoking provides most smoking cessation products (at the cost of a prescription or free if you are exempt) alongside the support of their fully trained adviser.

Come on…. make 2018 your year to pack in the evil weed!

Diego Peña

New international exchange agreement with Colombian university for PhD legal scholars

Colombian PhD legal scholar Diego Peña is the first to benefit from a new international exchange agreement between Kent Law School and the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá DC.

The reciprocal agreement enables up to three doctoral research students from each institution to study at the partner institution for a period of six to 12 months. It was instigated by Kent Law School Senior Lecturer Dr Luis Eslava with support from the Law School’s Co-Director of Postgraduate Research Professor Donatella Alessandrini, Director of International Programmes Lisa Dickson and Law Lecturer Dr Rose Sydney Parfitt.

Both Kent and Los Andes also share a commitment to promote academic staff mobility opportunities and the development and consolidation of research networks with a view to developing collaborative teaching, joint research projects and joint conferences and seminars.

Diego was keen to take advantage of the opportunity to engage with Kent Law School’s distinctive critical approach to socio-legal research and arrived in September to work under the supervision of Dr Eslava. His thesis is a study of the relationship between urban policy and public law in three Latin American cities: São Paulo, Santiago de Chile and Bogotá.

Diego said: ‘Kent was very attractive to me because I was trying to introduce a critical approach to my thesis. Additionally, I had read a book by Dr Eslava that was very stimulating and useful. He studies the links between local urban development and international law in developing countries that takes Bogotá as an example.’

This latest international exchange agreement is the second to be made available to PhD scholars at Kent Law School; the first agreement signed in May between Kent Law School and the University of Melbourne was also the first PhD student exchange agreement to be made available at Kent.

Pint of Science Festival

Share your research at a Pint of Science event

The Pint of Science festival is an international public engagement event that takes place over three days in May each year. Last year some 450 events took place across 26 cities in the UK including Canterbury and Medway. More than 1,000 scientists took to the stage in bars and pubs, sharing their research with members of the public.

A Pint of Science provides a unique platform for researchers to present, discuss and explore their work with their local community. It’s a fantastic opportunity to use your research to inform, explore and interact with a live audience.

Call for expressions of interest
Following a successful inaugural Kent festival last year (three sold-out events!), the Kent Pint of Science Team is co-ordinating the University’s festival for 2018. We plan to  double the number of events to six adding Tonbridge to the line-up with Canterbury, and Medway.

We’ve already selected a number of pubs and are looking for expressions of interest from speakers, particularly Early Career Researchers and final year PhD students looking to develop their public engagement skills.

If you are interested, please email pintofscience@kent.ac.uk with the following details by 23.59 on Wednesday 31 January 2018:

  1. Your name and school
  2. A summary of your research (max 100 words)
  3. Your plan for an interactive session of 20-30 minutes (max 100 words)
  4. A short summary explaining how you plan to engage a live audience (max 100 words).

Kent’s Pint of Science Team will review the expressions and develop themes for each evening of the festival – for examples of past themes, see: https://pintofscience.co.uk and https://www.kent.ac.uk/publicengagement/current-projects/pint-of-science.html

The outcome will be announced by the end of January. A practice run will take place in the spring.
