HEAT Project hot foots it for charity

Two members of the HEAT project team took part in the Pilgrims Hospices Firewalk held at the University’s Sports Pavilion on Monday 29 February.

Chris Laming and Jayne Lawson took up the challenge and raised almost £400.

Colleagues from across the University joined Pilgrims’ staff and members of the public also took part and were supported by friends and family noisily cheering everyone on.

Support Simon’s 240-mile cycle challenge

An electrician in Estates is training for a Paris to Whitstable cycle challenge in aid of charity.

Simon Ruff will be cycling 240 miles in just over two days from 17 to 19 March 2016 to raise funds for the Wooden Spoon charity. He is taking part in the challenge with his friend, Spencer Albone, a fellow coach from Whitstable Rugby Club.

Simon is currently taking part in ‘burst training’ to get himself in shape for the challenge. He said: ‘So far, it’s all going to plan – the rides are getting longer and less painful so, hopefully, by the time we start our ride we will be able to cope with most of what the weather can throw at us and manage the distance and time in the saddle.’

The Wooden Spoon charity aims to provide life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged children through the power of rugby.

Simon said that it was an obvious choice to support the charity: ‘Being a coach at a local rugby club I’ve seen how rugby can appeal to all and give people the joy of being part of a team and having fun.’

You can support Simon’s cycle challenge via his Just Giving webpage.
