CantiaQuorum explore musical ‘borrowings’ next week

Friday 20 November, Colyer-Fergusson Hall, 19.30

Hot on the heels of its recent sensational lunchtime concert, our resident ensemble, CantiaQuorum, returns to Colyer-Fergusson next week in a programme exploring the idea of musical ‘borrowings.’

Our professional ensemble brings a concert including Mendelssohn, Bartok, Shostakovich and Schnittke to the concert-hall, inspired by Stravinsky’s memorable statement, ‘Lesser artists borrow, great artists steal.”

The group will be joined by pianist Libby Burgess for Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.1 for piano and trumpet, and the programme also includes Bartok’s ‘Romanian Dances for string orchestra’ alongside pieces by Schnittke and Galton.

We’re still reeling from the group’s recent, electrifying lunchtime concert; don’t miss the opportunity to hear them in action once more! Full details: http://kent.ac.uk/music/whatson.html?tab=november

Prestigious funding award from the European Commission recognises the University’s contribution to child protection.

Supported by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships budget, the University, within a consortium co-ordinated by the University of Stirling, will carry out a project designed to improve the protection and wellbeing of children in Europe through the development of a common child protection curriculum. The funding award promises an improved knowledge base amongst social workers, enabling enhanced service delivery to vulnerable children, within and across different nation states.

Project partners include University of Bucharest, Romania, University of Tirana, Albania and Chisinau Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University in Moldova. Dr. Jane Reeves from the University’s Centre for Child Protection who is leading Kent’s activity within the project said: ‘this is a fantastic opportunity to work collaboratively across Europe on such an important issue. We were invited to the bid because of the innovative teaching and learning approaches we have pioneered here at the Centre and look forward to contributing our ideas and research to the project.’

Fairtrade Success

Thanks to the work of staff and students across the University and Kent Union, the University has successfully renewed its Fairtrade Status for a further 2 years.

By committing to Fairtrade thorough its Fairtrade Policy the University is demonstrating that it recognises its global responsibility.

Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalised by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.

The University of Kent has held Fairtrade Status since 2006. A Fairtrade University is one that has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade. They ensure that Fairtrade products are available in as many places as possible and they raise awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits that it brings to producers in developing countries with students and staff.

The University’s Fairtrade Steering Group is made up of representatives from Commercial Services, Kent Union and the wider University as well as student members and as a group they are responsible for ensuring the continuation of the University’s Fairtrade Status.

Templeman Library central core closes Monday 16 November

The central core of the Library will be closed from Monday 16 November for about a year as the next stage of development begins.

All the books and facilities will be available as usual, but there will be no internal access between Templeman West and Templeman East. Make sure you plan your visit so you know which entrance to use for the part of the Library you need.

When the Library study spaces get busy, there are other places you can work: try the study hubs and PC rooms around campus.

We’ve already started clearing out the central core, so if you’re in there this week you’ll notice it looks empty. The WiFi signal will be weak in the central core as we’re removing the wireless access points, but it is still strong in the West and East.

We’re sorry about the disruption, but the refurbishment will further improve the Library. When it is finished, the building will be lighter and more accessible, with a new entrance hall, more study spaces, more power for student devices and group study rooms.
