Inter-College Cup results

The Inter-College Cup is a competition in which students represent their colleges and compete against one another. There are now seven colleges represented in the cup and these are Darwin, Eliot, Keynes, Medway, Rutherford, Turing and Virginia Woolf.

The Cup is a competition which now spans 10 different sports, these include: Badminton, Men’s Basketball, Chumash Lacrosse, Cricket, Men’s Football, Netball, Rowing, Rugby 7s, Swimming and Tennis. With the possibility of Women’s Chumash Lacrosse and Volleyball being introduced in the near future.

Results:

Football: was a week of college Derbys with Eliot and Keynes both facing each other for the first time this season. The results were as follows:

Eliot FC vs Eliot Academicals 5-0

Rutherford Raiders vs Darwin Evolution 5-1

Virginia Woolf vs Medway Mavericks 1-3

Keynes Athletic vs Keynes FC 3-3

Cricket: was a week of close calls with Eliot winning 106-105 against Darwin/Turing and Rutherford beating Keynes 57-55

Spotlight on Chumash:

The indoor league for lacrosse, Chumash, launched at the start of the term. Working closely with Tom Neilly, as a Kent Union Sports Executive, the team put together a programme of taster sessions, league games, two week cup and a round robin, to run across the term. With new and regular players now taking part, the format has been really successful and we hope to build on this next term when the league is launched again. In addition, we are now working with the women’s lacrosse club to promote new opportunities to join the club and promote the sport.

This week the results were as follows:

Rutherford Roughnecks vs Tur/Woolf Typhlosions 3-3

Eliot Eiderdowns vs Darwin Outlaws 3-2

Darwin Outlaws vs Rutherford Roughnecks 5-3

If you are interested in participating in any of the Inter-College sports or if you are a club and would like to work alongside the sports development team to develop new opportunities for your current members and future players then please do not hesitate to contact us at sportsdevelopment@kent.ac.uk

Adam Chodzko’s new film Deep Above premieres 20th November in Bristol

Acclaimed contemporary visual artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art in the School of Music and Fine Art, Adam Chodzko’s new film Deep Above will premiere at the Watershed Cinema, Bristol on Friday November 20 at 13.00, followed by a conversation with the artist and psychoanalyst and editor of Engaging With Climate Change, Sally Weintrobe. The film is commissioned by Invisible Dust and produced in association with Watershed and Shambala Festival and is funded by the Wellcome Trust. Adam Chodzo works across media, ranging from large-scale installations to de-materialised interventions. Whilst exploring the poetic spaces between documentary and fantasy, conceptualism and surrealism, public and private, Chodzko’s work provokes our collective imagination by wondering how, through the visual, we might best understand and re-form our encounters with the society and environment that surround us.

In Deep Above, Chodzko uses moving image and sound to explore, short-circuit and abstract our slippery self-deceptions regarding climate change. With world focus on the imminent UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, Deep Above attempts, through art, to loosen our mental blocks about environmental catastrophe.

Deep Above Screenings:
Premiere and discussion on the 20th of November at Watershed, 13.00-14.00. Film running time: approx. 30 minutes. Book here: http://www.watershed.co.uk/whatson/7005/deep-above-premiere-discussion/

Minute’s silence for Paris

On behalf of the University of Kent, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the people of France and those who lost their loved ones following the attacks in Paris on Friday. Our thoughts are with them at this terrible time.

The University will be joining the minute’s silence to be held across Europe today at 11.00 (UK time), in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Alcohol and your health

This Alcohol Awareness Week, we are encouraging students to think about their drinking habits and the impact it has on their wellbeing.

Today’s advice looks at how cutting down on the amount you drink can improve your health.

Health benefits of drinking less

  • Weight loss – alcohol is seriously fattening. Four pints could be the equivalent of eating a hot dog and a burger, with a doughnut for dessert. Cutting back on the amount you drink could see your waistline shrink!
  • Clear skin – drinking dehydrates you and deprives the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients. So swap the zit-zapping cream and that extra pint for a glass of the clear stuff.
  • Mental health – too much alcohol can lead to sleepless nights, stress, anxiety and memory loss – not what you want when studying for a degree!
  • At less risk of developing serious illnesses – the more you drink the more likely you are to develop liver disease, some cancers, heart disease, brain damage, infertility, dementia and the list goes on. Read more on the NHS website.

Are you drinking too much?

The government’s lower risk guidelines for alcohol for men are 3-4 units per day and for women 2-3 units per day.

Did you know – there are 1.5 units in a small glass of wine, 2 units in a pint of lower strength cider and 2 units in one can of beer.

Track your drinking, how much you are spending and your calorie intake with the free Drinkaware app.

Want to talk?

If you need support, talk to a trained adviser from Turning Point about your drinking habits and how to cut-down.
