Kent-Ghent: Joint call for projects

Since 2009 the University of Kent and Ghent University have enjoyed a strategic international relationship.

In order to stimulate further Kent-Ghent cooperation, in continuation of the call in 2013 and 2014, a third joint call for proposals is launched for 2015.

This call aims to support joint Kent-Ghent projects by funding mobility between colleagues at the two institutions (for example short-term staff/student exchange, seminars, workshops, preparatory meetings to establish longer-term collaboration such as double degrees, joint research projects).

More information about the application requirements can be found on the International Development website. The deadline to apply is 2 March 2015.

National success for student mediators

Two third-year Kent Law School students have been named ‘best mediating pair in the UK’ at the National Mediation Finals hosted by Kingston University.

Stacia Franz and Kelly McNulty won the accolade while competing in the National Mediation Finals hosted by Kingston University.

Kelly also won ‘second best individual mediator’ in the UK.

Stacia and Kelly, together with fellow team members Jonothan Boettcher and Chris Sivry, won the award for ‘third best mediation team’ in the UK. Each pair took part in four mediations, taking turns to adopt the roles of mediators and disputing parties.

The team of final year LLB Law students will now go forward to represent Kent at the 14th Annual International Law School Mediation Championships organised by the International Academy of Dispute Resolution.

Kent students have already experienced success at an international level in mediation, with a team from the Law School winning ‘The Most Outstanding New Mediation Team’ trophy in Dublin in 2013. Last year a team from Kent competed in the international championships hosted in Chicago. This year, the competition will be held in London from 18 to 21 February.

Mediation and negotiation are amongst several options open to students at Kent Law School who are keen to develop their practical legal skills; other options include getting involved with the work of Kent Law Clinic, mooting, client interviewing and participation in mock trials.

Work-Study Scheme: help students improve their employability

The Careers & Employability Service (CES) has been awarded funding by the Development Office’s Student Project Grant Scheme to help increase the number of student work-study employment opportunities across campus.

This funding will allow CES to match-fund Academic Schools and Professional Services Departments who advertise eligible paid roles for students this academic year.

Since October 2014, the Work-Study Scheme has helped 31 students obtain campus-based roles, ranging from Student Research Assistant in the School of History to Lab Assistant in the School of Biosciences and Student Experience Assistant (Research) in the Careers and Employability Service.

These roles have allowed students to experience realistic, meaningful paid work, whilst undertaking employability skills training sessions and being mentored and supported throughout the application and interview process.

Prior to undertaking the employment, the students are trained in work etiquette and a variety of other topics.

There will be five portions of funding available, to be distributed between:

  • Humanities faculty
  • Social Sciences faculty
  • Sciences faculty
  • Medway campus
  • Professional Services

Are you considering recruiting soon? Do you have a role that would suit a student or could be amended to employ a student? If you are interested in employing a Work-Study Scheme student, please contact Hannah Greer h.r.s.greer@kent.ac.uk or 01227 824038.
