Mystery diners wanted

Kent Hospitality is looking for staff who would like to do some mystery dining.

In return for free food, we will ask you to provide feedback on your visit to each of seven different catering outlets. All visits will need to be completed by 31 October.

If you’d like to take part (and haven’t done this before), please email Liz Culmer by 5pm on Wednesday 1 October to say why you would make a good mystery diner.

Book your tickets now for staff play!

Book your tickets now for the new University of Kent Players’ production – Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced at the Gulbenkian from Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 October.

A proportion of ticket sales, together with proceeds from programme sales, will be donated to Age UK in Canterbury and Ashford. The Gulbenkian will also make a donation based on sales of a special ‘Delicious Death’ chocolate cake. At each performance, volunteers from Age UK will be on hand to talk about their work locally.

Zarina Hawkins, Head of the Publishing Office who is directing and starring in the play, explained why the Players have chosen to support Age UK: ‘The play features Christie’s well-loved female sleuth, Miss Marple – an older person who is lucky enough to be very capable both mentally and physically, and is very much part of her society. We realised that not everyone was that lucky but, thanks to the work of Age UK, many older people have somewhere to turn for help and social interaction.’

A Murder is Announced takes place in the village of Chipping Cleghorn, when an unusual announcement in the newspaper leads the curious villagers to Miss Blacklock’s home, where they become witnesses to a murder. In true Agatha Christie style, there are mixed motives, concealed identities, a determined inspector following the twists and turns, and Miss Marple on hand to provide the final solution – at some risk to herself!

Tickets are on sale now, priced £12 full and £8 concessions, in person at the Gulbenkian Box Office or online.

Support with writing

New Royal Literary Fund (RLF) Writing Fellows for Kent students at Canterbury and Medway.

The Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS) in UELT is very pleased to announce the arrival of two Royal Literary Fellows: Tim Walker and Roopa Farooki at both the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Both Royal Literary Fellows bring a diverse background in writing to their work supporting and developing students’ academic writing at university.

Insights gained through narrative, travel writing, children’s literature and journalism are applied to some of the underlying issues of academic writing such as getting started on a text, clarity, structure and developing a distinctive ‘voice’.

Allia Wilson, Manager of the Student Learning Advisory Service, commented that the provision of two RLF Writing Fellows at Kent was ‘a unique opportunity for students at both Canterbury and Medway to benefit from the rich and dynamic experience of professional writers. Both Tim and Roopa have a wealth of expertise, and a passionate commitment to promoting good writing, that will really help our students’.

Journalism Research Seminar

Julia Sandbrand from the Centre for Journalism is delivering a research seminar titled ‘Media Coverage of Climate Change: A Global Issue in National Media’ on Wednesday 8 October at 1pm in G1-04, Gillingham Building, Medway campus.

Climate change is one of the world’s most urgent problems, but has fallen behind in the priorities of governments and media since the disappointing 2009 conference in Copenhagen.

This presentation provides preliminary results for a study on media coverage on climate change and in particular a comparison between media and government frames.

About Julia Sandbrand

Julia holds a BA in Communication from the University of Munich and a MA in Political Strategy and Communication from the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies. She has been a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Journalism since January 2012. From October 2014 she will be working as a trainee for the European Commission for five months.

All welcome!
