Campus Shuttle trial stop at the Dockyard

We are pleased to announce that The Kings Ferry have won the tender for the Campus Shuttle and will continue to run the shuttle service for the next few years.

As a trial, the Campus Shuttle will run to and from the Dockyard. The service will continue to run on an hourly basis. The Transport Team and The Kings Ferry will be monitoring the effect and usage of this additional stop. This will be a term by term trial.

The Campus Shuttle is a free service for University of Kent students and staff between the Canterbury and Medway campuses. If you would like transportation between Liberty Quays and the Dockyard you can purchase a discounted ticket for the 191 Arriva bus .

As part of the new contract The Kings Ferry are providing two new larger vehicles, one 33 seater and one 49 seater. Features of the new vehicles include Wi-Fi, USB charging points, more comfortable seats, a toilet and fold out tables on the larger vehicle.

How to gain access to Canterbury lockable cycle shelters

  • For access to the Library cycle shelter email TransportTeam@kent.ac.uk with your name, staff or student number, number on back of your Kent One card, type and colour of bike and any identifying features of your bicycle.
  • For other lockable cycle shelters come to the Security and Transport Centre with your Kent One card to gain access.

How to gain access to Medway lockable cycle shelters

  • For access to the lockable cycle shelter at Medway, email MedwayCardAccess@kent.ac.uk with your name, staff or student number and number on the back of your Kent One card.

Giles Lane car park update- 7 August 2018

Work on Giles Lane car park is progressing well. The main curb lines have been installed and tarmacking starts this week.

A large conference group (Canterbury Retreat) are leaving the campus on Wednesday 8 August, therefore more parking will become available within the Park Wood Courts car parks.

Canterbury campus

Giles Lane car park closure (Giles Lane car park, Canterbury)

  • Monday 9 July – September– Giles Lane car park is closed over the summer for essential maintenance and improvement works to take place. This closure has been requested by the Estates Department. For more information see our Giles Lane car park changes webpage.

Canterbury Retreat (Purchas Court 1-16 car park, Canterbury)

  • Monday 22 July- Thursday 9 August– Purchas Court 1-16 car park will be closed for the Canterbury Retreat conference group. This closure has been requested by the Conference Office.

Rothford car park closure (Rothford car park, Canterbury)

  • Sunday 5 August –Thursday 9 August– Rear of Rothford car park is closed to dismantle the UPP compound and reopen the bays in this area. This closure has been requested by UPP.

Medical Centre parking (University Medical Centre, Canterbury)

  • Reminder that parking bays outside the University Medical Centre are for people attending the Medical Centre only and are not part of the University pink or blue zone car parks.

Medway campus

Community Speed Watch scheme (Mast Pond, Dockyard)

  • Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (CHDT) have registered a Community Speed Watch scheme which is part of the police National Speed Watch. The speed limit at the Dockyard is 10mph. Warning road signs will be deployed at both entrances to the site on days selected for speed monitoring. If your vehicle is detected travelling above the CHDT speed limit, the details of the vehicle will be taken, and your vehicle could be prohibited from entering the site in the future. Excessive speeds will also be reported to Kent Police Speed Watch team. Please continue to drive to the CHDT speed limit to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.

Arriva student and staff University discounted bus passes are valid for all Arriva buses in Medway, Kent and East Sussex. See full map for how far you can travel on your bus pass. This includes Maidstone and Gravesend. You can also catch the 700 bus from Chatham to Bluewater shopping centre.

Check out the Arriva webpage for more suggestions of places to shop, eat and drink that you can get to by using the Arriva discounted bus pass.

Remember that all staff and students have access to the promotional codes to purchase these tickets- not only Medway students and staff.

How far can your Stagecoach bus pass take you?

Did you know that Student Unirider bus tickets and staff South East Megarider tickets are valid for any Stagecoach bus in Kent and East Sussex? See the full map for how far you can travel on your bus pass.

Canterbury is one of Stagecoach’s main bus stations and therefore connects many different towns in Kent, making it easy to explore the area. This includes coastal towns like Margate, Ramsgate and Sandwich.

Remember that these tickets are available to all staff and students- not only Canterbury students and staff.

Interactive parking map

We have been listening to feedback and have created an interactive parking map to show information about all of the parking areas on campus- parking zone, capacity, accessible bays and motorcycle bays.

The parking map is currently being updated to reflect the changes to Giles Lane car park. Once this is completed the interactive parking map will be updated.

Giles Lane update- 10 July 2018

Giles Lane car park is now fully closed and the contractors have started the maintenance works.

The first 2-3 weeks of the project will produce a lot of dust and mud while the pink zone is brought down to the level of the current blue zone.

The project team are meeting on a very regular basis and are constantly monitoring the parking situation on campus.

The Transport Team are working closely with Campus Security to advise and assist with traffic management during the car park closure.

Car park disruptions- Canterbury and Medway campuses

 Coach and minibus park (Oaks car park, Canterbury)

  • Sunday 7 July- September – Oaks car park is closed to accommodate coaches and minibuses. This is to support Enrolment Management Services, the Conference Office and other departments with conferences and school visits. The coach and minibus park has been relocated from Giles Lane car park while works take place.

Medway campus

There are no known car park disruptions to Medway campus for the next two weeks. Any disruptions that we are made aware of will be updated on the transport events calendar

Giles Lane car park update- 6 July 2018

Giles Lane car park will be fully closed Sunday 8 July overnight so works can start Monday 9 July. Personal safety as well as potential damage to vehicles is being considered in regards to the whole car park being closed.

The first 2-3 weeks of the project will produce a lot of dust and mud while the pink zone is brought down to the level of the current blue zone.

Estates are working closely with the contractors and health and safety advisors to see if it is possible to safely reopen any part of the car park during the works.

The project team are meeting on a very regular basis and are constantly monitoring the parking situation on campus.

The Transport Team are working closely with Campus Security to advise and assist with traffic management during the car park closure.
