Reshmi Dutta-Flanders on forensic linguistics

Dr Reshmi Dutta-Flanders, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Linguistics, is to present a conference paper at the Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics’ fourth annual roundtable in forensic linguistics and phonetics.

The GSFL is an international organisation made up of social scientists, practitioners, and students who are devoted to promoting cooperative work within the field of forensic linguistics (FL) and forensic phonetics (FP) to the betterment of the society. The GSFL holds an annual roundtable where FL/FP researchers, educators and practitioners can present and discuss their work within an interdisciplinary, supportive and scholarly environment.

Reshmi’s paper on ‘The Modus Operandi of Analysing Criminal Narrative’ will demonstrate how a plot is structured based on the ‘principle of relevance’, that is, how an audience interprets any situation for meaning based upon expectations. Using Ford Madox Ford’s novel The Good Soldier (1915), she uses a ‘discourse-based’ frame analysis that is looking for reoccurring themes and how they are placed across the plot form of a story. The consecution of these themes as scenarios contextualise the motives of participants in a story, and can enable a better understanding of an offender’s narrative and further aspects of criminality.

The GSFL Roundtable takes place in Mainz, Germany from 26-28 August 2016. Further information about the event is available at: www.gsfl.info/roundtable–16.html

Condolences for Antony Copley

Antony Copley, a loyal member of the School of History, died on 18 July 2016.

Antony saw active service during the Suez Crisis, then studied at Oxford and taught at Bangor before joining the University of Kent in 1967. He specialised in 19th century French and Indian history and retired in 2002 as a Reader.

He remained an active member of the School and University, attending events and continuing to research and write books, including Music and the Spiritual: Composers and Politics in the 20th Century (2012). He also generously sponsored the Copley Prize for the best final year history dissertation, and enjoyed judging them and presenting the prize itself.

In 2014 Antony became an honorary Professor of Modern European and Indian History, which gave him much pleasure. Last year he published his autobiography, A Memoir: Historian and Homosexual: Search for a Postwar Identity. He will be much missed by those who knew him.

Kenneth Fincham, School of History

Antony’s funeral will take place at St Clement’s Church, Sandwich, at 15.30 on Tuesday 2 August. A memorial service will be arranged in Canterbury in the autumn.

An obituary was published in the Guardian on 1 August 2016.

Summer sports membership is a hit!

Kent Sport asked summer members who have taken advantage of the current 50% special membership offer how it is going so far. It turns out, it’s going pretty well! 95% of recipients have rated their experience as excellent or good. 95% also said they would recommend the Kent Sport summer membership to a friend.

Here’s what they told us:

‘The price is affordable for me and the classes have not been packed so made it less daunting.’

‘Good lay out. Spacious. Well maintained. Well staffed. Excellent locker facilities. Well balanced variety of machines/weights. Friendly receptionist staff. Great air con!’

‘We have been using the gym regularly, it is very well equipped and the air conditioning is excellent. There is never a queue to use the equipment, unlike other gyms. Also the staff at reception are very friendly and helpful. All in all it offers good value for money. I will be renewing next month even though I am on holiday for some of it. I have recommended this offer to family and friends.’

Summer members particularly seem to like getting unlimited visits to all the facilities for a month. The membership offer includes access to the fitness suite, squash courts and the artificial and grass pitches. Also included is unlimited access to all fitness and dance classes, equipment hire, seven day advance bookings; and discounts on courses, personalised fitness assessments, exercise programmes and at the Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic.

For just £33.50 adult, or £26 for 16 to 18-year-olds or anyone in full time education, you can enjoy the sports facilities for a month this summer at the University of Kent. Come along to the Sports Centre or Pavilion reception to check out the facilities and to join.

Top national design prize for Kent student

A student on the University’s BA (Hons) Fashion course, a School of Music and Fine Art franchised course delivered at the Tonbridge campus of West Kent College, has won a top national design prize.

Cripa Yangkhrung won the Hainsworth Statement Award, worth £1,000, at the prestigious New Designers expo in London with her handmade fashion collection inspired by nature and its elements, Earthen Solidity, chosen from amongst the thousands on show.

Cripa said: ‘I never dreamed I’d be selected – and am beyond happy and honoured. I’ve always worked really hard and now feel this has paid off. I hope the fact they picked me offers inspiration to subsequent students.’

The award is for the most creative and innovative used of a cloth or fabric in a finished product, demonstrating a flair for fresh new ideas. In addition to the prize, the winner is invited to visit the prestigious Hainsworth Mill, whose cloth is used for the ceremonial uniforms worn by the Royal Family during state occasions and the military uniforms worn during the Charge of the Light Brigade.

The judges cited imagination, innovation, versatility, and good use of fabrics as reasons for selection, saying: ‘Cripa’s work shows excellent vision and concept, complimented with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship, resulting in a capsule collection that speaks of a longevity within the fashion industry and a bright and exciting future.’

Her collection consists of androgynous garments created by free-form pattern-cutting. Using locally-sourced wool fabrics with buttons she made out of wood, the collection promotes and supports a sustainable fashion industry.

SMFA Lecturer and Partner College Liaison Officer Tim Meacham said: ‘This is a huge achievement and a testament to the students, and the quality of teaching staff.’

First Medway Arts Fundraising Camp hailed a success

The first Arts Fundraising Camp in Medway at The Historic Dockyard Chatham took place on 14 July.

Organised by Fundraising UK Ltd and hosted by the University’s School of Music & Fine Art, this event for arts fundraisers was a fantastic opportunity for local and regional arts professionals and fundraisers to learn, share good practice and network.

The sun was shining at the atmospheric location, with attendees travelling from across Kent and London from a diverse range of organisations and fundraising professionals.

Howard Lake, organiser and director for Fundraising UK commented: ‘It was a pleasure to see so much fundraising experience being shared amongst arts and culture fundraisers at Fundraising Camp at the University of Kent in Medway. And to see so many new contacts being made. Informal and practical events like this do seem to be an effective and enjoyable way of spreading fundraising ideas, especially if you’re a sole fundraiser or about to embark on a major fundraising campaign.’

Images from the day are available on Flickr. Further information is available on the fundraising.co.uk webpages.

University website in top 10 for digital acumen

Kent’s website has been placed in the top ten of all British university websites, ranked by digital acumen for the first time.

The research, by digital marketing specialist Bray Leino Yucca, used five sets of criteria to score UK universities, using their knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). 18-year-old students were also asked to score every website based upon their ‘first impression’ of the visual design of the home page.

Topping the resulting table were Oxford and Cambridge, with Kent placed eighth above Edinburgh and Sheffield.

Alan Thorpe, Bray Leino Yucca’s digital and data director, said: ‘In an age where online brand is everything, the internet generation want to be proud of their choices, and feel it reflects their own personalities. If a university’s website doesn’t fit an aspiring student’s sense of identity, it is unlikely to be the first choice on their UCAS form. Key to meeting these aspirations is good quality content.’
