MFA student work a huge success at Eastgate House

The historic Eastgate House in Rochester recently hosted Authenticate, an intervention with live multimedia installations and performances by Year 3 Event and Experience Design students.

The event was so successful that Eastgate House want to keep part of one of the works by student Emma Greenwood – an installation of a jigsaw/drawing of a decorative plaster ceiling, on a viewing mirror. They also want to work with student Elle Mayne on a future video mapping commission.

Lisa Caleno, Visitor Development Officer, at Eastgate House commented: ‘We were so impressed with the students work at Eastgate House this week, not just in the creativity and understanding of the house shown in the installations but also their courtesy and professionalism.  We were particularly impressed with Emma’s work in the mirror room and Elle’s projection in the Rochester Room.  I would like to consider working with Elle when she has graduated on a potential installation at the house using projection. We would also be very interested in acquiring the jigsaw puzzle which Emma created to have as a feature of the mirror room.’

Peter Hatton, Programmes Director for Event and Experience Design, Event and Experience Management and Fine Art, and Deputy Head of School, added: ‘Both outcomes are very good for the students in terms of their confidence, portfolio and employability, and the reputation of EED, & SMFA, University of Kent.’

Cafe Scientifique

Café Scientifique lecture on Wildlife Forensics

Dr Anne-Maria Brennan from the Centre for Professional Practice gave a Café Scientifique lecture on Wildlife Forensics for Science & More at the No 84 Tearoom in Gravesend.

Science & More (SAM Club About Things Strange & Interesting) is a monthly pop-up science lecture,  mainly for schoolchildren (but parents come along too).

Dr Brennan gave a talk about her research and forensic investigation work and also gave members of the audience a chance to collect and examine pollen evidence under microscope.

She commented: ‘It was a packed house and even though I showed the occasional gruesome picture of crime scenes it didn’t seem to put anyone off their cakes!’

Festival of Projects – come and join us on 10 January

As the festive break approaches, no doubt you are searching for exciting events for the diary to look forward to when you return in January!

We have the solution:  Kent’s first Festival of Projects, which will take place on the afternoon of 10 January.

Here at Kent we have a fantastic range of student-facing projects and initiatives – but sometimes we are less good at raising awareness of those projects, communicating progress, and making sure they connect, integrate and work together. So this is your chance to find out more.

During the afternoon, we will be showcasing a range of projects designed to produce direct, positive changes in student experience, attainment and outcomes. We are expecting contributions, for example, from the Student Success Project, Kent Union, the Student Hub, Careers and Internationalisation, to name but a few. There will be short presentations, along with two opportunities for further discussion and networking over coffee and drinks – when you can visit stalls to find out more about the more than 30 projects which will be involved on the day.

All colleagues are most welcome to attend, whether or not you are involved in a student-focused project, to find out more about what we are doing at Kent to support the student journey, and to play your part in discussing how we can link our excellent projects together better in future.

Please come and join us on 10 January! You can see the latest draft programme and sign up here.

Last few days of Travel Plan Survey 2017

The staff and student Travel Plan Survey 2017 closes on Friday 8 December 2017.

Don’t miss the chance to have your say and potentially win £100 cash card to use at the catering outlets on campus, or one of 100 hot drinks vouchers. Just enter your University of Kent email address at the end of the survey to enter the prize draw.

This is your opportunity to let the Estates Department know how we can improve travel to, from and around our campuses. Have your say on buses, cycling, parking, the Campus Shuttle and more.

The survey takes between 5-10 minutes to complete. There is also a “finish later” option if you need to return to complete the survey.
