Thrilling end to the SoccerZone Cup

On Friday 31 March, 25 5-aside football teams arrived at the Pavilion for the highlight of the sporting calendar: The SoccerZone Cup. Forget Wimbledon or the World Cup Final, the SoccerZone Cup was the place to be!

Five groups battled it out over ten fixtures to secure a place in either the cup competition (Champions League) or plate competition (Europa League).

For the past few years, The Rolling Stoners have dominated the SoccerZone Cup winning multiple titles, however a penalty shoot-out at the quarter final stage of the cup competition saw them bow out to one of our newest teams, Sexy FC.

Sexy FC progressed to the semi-finals but were overcome by the skill of Ain’t No Holebas Girl.

In the plate competition a bye in the semi-finals saw an easy route to the finals for Rockhead Rumble who were eventually joined by another one of our new teams, GG’s.

The plate final came down to a nerve racking penalty shootout after a dramatic 4-1 to 4-4 comeback by Rockhead Rumble. However, the fairy-tale story ended with GG’s winning the penalty shootout and with that were crowned the SoccerZone plate champions.

In the cup competition, after eight gruelling matches and 150 minutes of football, CFC were crowned SoccerZone Cup champions after a victory against Ain’t No Holebas Girl in the final. CFC complete the double, winning both their league and their cup competition.

You can see some of the action from the SoccerZone Cup in our Facebook album.

Kent Sport will be running another SoccerZone Cup competition in the summer term, Friday 2 June, so there is still time to get your hands on some silverware. If you are interested in entering a team email sportsdevelopment@kent.ac.uk for more details.

Competition: win signed novels from our authors

Following the success of the Writing Fiction / Getting Published event, held on Thursday 9 March, in which three authors from the Department of Comparative Literature talked about their novels, the process of writing and how they got published, we have signed copies of Anna Schaffner’s The Truth about Julia and Lesley Gray’s The King’s Jockey to give away.

To win, just answer the following question:
What was the name of the king’s horse that struck the suffragette, Emily Wilding Davison, at the 1913 Derby?

Send your answers to secl@kent.ac.uk with ‘SECL book competition’ as the subject of the email. The competition is open until midnight on Friday 26 May 2017.

Signed copies of Christian Moratti’s Italian-language books have been presented to the Italian department to give away at their end-of-term party.

Photos of the event have been added to the new Comparative Literature at Kent Facebook page.

SMFA Fine Art student wins Medway Watersports Trust mural design competition

After submitting two entries to the Mural Design Competition organised by the Medway Watersports Trust (The Strand) SMFA 3rd year Fine Art student Sharmaine Kwan was delighted that both of her designs were selected to be painted on the car park wall. To see the two time-lapse videos of the work, go to http://sharmainekwan.wixsite.com/kwan/design

Geoff Waters, Trustee Operations, Medway Watersports Trust commented: ‘Sharmaine Kwan has designed and painted two high quality murals for the development of Medway Watersports Centre at the Strand Leisure Park in Gillingham, establishing from the outset a high standard for future artists to aspire. It is with much pride that I write to emphasize the impact Sharmaine’s contribution has had on the improved environment for the centre and its adjacent carpark, was officially celebrated and formally opened by the Sport and Cultural Minister Tracey Crouch MP on Saturday 1 April.’

The refurbishment of the Templeman Library is progressing steadily. The East has new windows and 75 more study spaces. The closed central section is being completed this summer, ready to use in September.

What will be different from September?

  • New names for spaces – the four sections of the building will be called blocks A, B, C and D
  • Four fully accessible entrances

Celebrating students supporting other students

On 29 March, students from 15 schools involved in the Academic Peer Mentoring (APM) scheme attended an awards ceremony hosted by the Student Learning Advisory Service (SLAS). Mentors and colleagues from participating Schools joined in the celebration of students’ engagement and achievements.

The awards were presented to the mentors by Dr Bob Newport, Emeritus Professor of Materials Physics, who was one of the pioneers and a great advocate of the APM scheme in SPS. Mentors from Architecture, KBS and SSPSSR Medway made presentations and showcased the impact this additional support has had on student achievement. The APM scheme has become an important intervention in the University’s Student Success project.

The APM experience shows that mentors benefit greatly from the scheme as they deepen their understanding of the course content as well as enhance their employability skills. 91% of previous Kent peer mentors, who are in touch with the alumni office, are now in graduate jobs, compared to 80.4% for Kent graduates in general.

‘The University’s peer mentoring scheme is a fantastic way for students to develop valuable employability skills such as communication, planning and leadership’ (Amy Wiggins Medway Careers Adviser)

95% of mentors would recommend the APM scheme to others.
‘It is really a rewarding opportunity’
‘Among the most full academic experiences’
‘One of my students wanted to drop out but she didn’t and said it was down to the academic peer sessions. She wouldn’t have a degree if we’d let her drop out’
‘A great experience for mentors and mentees’

If you would like to be involved in the APM scheme, please check your School’s website and/or contact your School as Schools will be shortly recruiting Mentors.

To find out more about mentoring at Kent please visit https://www.kent.ac.uk/learning/school-support/apm.html or email slasapm@kent.ac.uk
