Go Abroad Fortnight kicks off this week!

International Partnerships are hosting a two-week series of events from 10-21 October to help students and staff find out about the opportunities to go abroad at Kent.

There are many activities planned during the fortnight so please encourage your students to come along. The events range from promoting study and work opportunities abroad, preparing students for time abroad and supporting students who have returned. Staff are welcome to attend the sessions to learn more about the Go Abroad opportunities and support available for students.

Of course, going abroad is not only for students! We are also running an information session for staff to learn about the opportunities available to them through the Erasmus+ programme.

Vice-Chancellor’s Office – Support for events

The University plan 2015-2020 cites engagement as a key pillar. In order to support Schools and departments in hosting events with external speakers and engaging wider audiences, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor has two initiatives in place.

A discretionary fund is available to anyone hosting a visiting lecturer, to apply you need simply to contact the Office of the Vice-Chancellor with the details of the event. Funding can then be provided to cover hospitality – usually a wine reception. Funding shall not exceed £500 for any one School in a given year.

There is also the possibility of having external speaker events classified as a ‘Distinguished Visitor Lecture’. Such lectures occur when visiting lecturers have name recognition beyond their field and the lecture is not already part of a specific lecture series. In such instances the event will benefit from a package of support in addition to financial contributions, this includes event management and publicity.

For full details about these initiatives please visit the OVC webpages (www.kent.ac.uk/ovc) and to apply email vicechancellor@kent.ac.uk.

The University Employability Festival is taking place from 10 October until 4 November 2016.
An exciting range of Employability events are on offer at the Medway and Canterbury campuses for all students:

  • Medway Campus 10 – 21 October 2016
  • Canterbury Campus 24 October – 4 November 2016

Staff and students are being encouraged to get involved with Kent’s award-winning Employability Festival. Building on the success of previous years, Academic Schools, Kent and GK Unions and Professional Services are joining together with the Careers and Employability Service to offer students and graduates a fantastic assortment of career and skills development activities. Students can take part in competitions, get advice on CVs, skills development, interviews, assessment centres and much more.
The highlight of the Festival is the annual University of Kent Careers Fair at the Canterbury Campus on Tuesday 1 November. This Fair hosts over 100 organisations from different industry sectors eager to meet with students. It is a great chance to get information about graduate employers and discover what they do. The Employability Fair at Medway will be hosting over 50 exhibitors on Wednesday 12 October. Students and graduates will have the chance to meet with organisations providing career opportunities, volunteering positions and postgraduate study options.

Events are planned all over the campuses and students are welcome to attend as many as they can. The great news is that most events are open to students from all stages and Schools. Further details can be found on the EmpFest webpage or you can collect a programme from The Careers and Employability Service.

European funding award to support innovative criminological research

The University is delighted to be part of a consortium awarded Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership funding to implement a project designed to improve the quality and relevance of higher education in the field of European and International Criminology. The project, coordinated by the Erasmus University Rotterdam will support the development of a Joint Research Master’s degree in Border Crossing, Security and Social Justice.

The University’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) will work alongside the other project partners – Ghent University, Belgium, Koç University, Turkey, and Bologna University, Italy to develop a ‘state of the art’ curriculum that will respond to the demands on criminologists in a changing world of security issues. The consortium has been established on the basis of existing strong education and research links, and will seek to draw on complementary expertise in implementing the project.

Phil Hubbard, Professor of Urban Studies and Head of School welcomes recognition, through the funding award, of the University’s strong collaboration with European partners: “At Kent we have extensive experience of delivering collaborative programmes and have a long history of excellent relationships with our European partner universities. We believe that such collaboration gives our students excellent insight and varied opportunities to apply theory and knowledge in a global context, expanding their skills and experience beyond normal confines.”
