Lend your voice to the new University Audio Tour!

Enrolment Management Services and the Web Development team at the University have collaborated on an exciting project to create an Audio Tour app, designed for prospective students and their families to help them find their way around during a campus visit. The project is one of twelve Beacon Projects, established as part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

To bring the tour to life, we are using audio clips from students and staff, and this is where you come in! If you’re in Eliot, Rutherford, Becket Court, Tyler Court, Keynes or Turing, having a great time and love where you live, we want to hear from you and your experiences of living on campus.

Student Success (EDI) Staff Seminar: 16 November

The Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor and Faculty Deans have issued an invitation to the first Student Success (EDI) Staff Seminar on Monday 16 November. The seminar will take place from 10am – 1pm and will be followed by lunch in the Darwin Conference Suite, Canterbury campus.

The issue of differentials in student success is an area of great concern for all universities. As part of Kent’s commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, it is incumbent upon us to understand the range of issues that affect student success and to ensure that we have effective measures in place to counteract the effect of these issues on student outcomes.

Comprehensive research undertaken at the University has shown that our profile in terms of degree attainment and student retention reflects the national picture. As a result of these findings, a two-year pilot project is underway to improve the success rates of students across the University.

This academic and action research project directly involves nine schools but the strategy is University-wide. The Student Success Project Team will provide information on the work across the pilot schools via poster presentations and project researchers will deliver their initial findings. In addition, there will be table discussions about the Academic Adviser system, the Teaching Excellence Framework and the Student Experience.

Members of academic and professional services staff are encouraged to attend the event.

To find out more, see www.kent.ac.uk/studentsuccess or email Jan Moriarty, Student Success (EDI) Project Manager: j.moriarty@kent.ac.uk

Book Launch: Marxism, Religion and Ideology: Themes from David McLellan

The Centre for Critical Thought and the School of Politics and International Relations are pleased to announce the publication of Marxism, Religion and Ideology: Themes from David McLellan (Routledge, 2015).

Few scholars have done as much to tease out the intricacies of Marx, ideology and religion and their overlapping concerns as the eminent writer and Marx biographer, Professor David McLellan. This book brings together a group of internationally renowned academics to reflect upon, develop and criticise McLellan’s analyses of these three themes with a view to contributing more broadly to scholarly debates in these fields. The book was edited by Dr David Bates (Canterbury Christ Church University), Dr Iain MacKenzie (University of Kent) and Professor Sean Sayers (University of Kent). Contributors include Lord Bhikhu Parekh, and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Rowan Williams. The book also contains an essay in which Professor McLellan responds to the contributions in the book.

To celebrate this publication we have organised two lectures. Professor Sayers will present a summary of his chapter for the book and a visiting speaker, Dr Andrew Chitty (University of Sussex), will reflect on the writings of the early Marx and Professor McLellan’s contribution to our understanding of those texts.

The talks will be from 14.00 to 16.00 on Wednesday 11th November 2015 in Grimond LT3, followed by a drinks reception in Grimond Foyer.

Please come along and join us in celebrating Professor McLellan’s contribution to critical scholarship at the University of Kent.
