Opening of the Student Media 50th Anniversary Interactive Project

The Student Media 50th Anniversary Interactive Project will open on the 16th May at 4pm in the Student Media Centre. It showcases 50 years of student media at Kent, From the first edition of InCant and the first transmission of Audio Rutherford to the launch of KTV and the CSRfm project. This will be a chance to relive the history of student media through our interactive installation which will feature old issues of InCant, KRED and InQuire, videos from the early film making societies and recordings from UKCR and CSRfm. The project has also uncovered the breadth of alumni involved in student media so as part of the wall we have included alumni stories and interviews relating to their time at student media and where they are now.

The wall will be a permanent fixture at the University so feel free to pop down and see us. Or if you are attending the alumni weekend in September we will also be open for you to see the installation.

USS 2016 – Presentations by USS

A package of changes to USS has been proposed, would you like to find out more? Register now for Eifion Morris’ presentation: USS 2016.

Eifion, who is the Member Communications Manager for USS, will be visiting the University on Wednesday 18 & 19 May. During his 40 minute presentation Eifion will explain, in plain English, what all the proposed scheme changes mean and he’ll answer any questions that might arise.

You’ll gain a broad understanding, straight from the horse’s mouth, of what the proposed changes are and how they might affect you from April 2016; and how your past benefits will be treated. There’s still plenty of detail to be decided, and the changes aren’t formally agreed until after a formal consultation process.

We should stress that this is intended as an information session; an opportunity for members to find out more about the proposed changes and their implications. During his presentation, Eifion will share details with you about a formal consultation process that is being established as part of the scheme change process. Use this channel to share any comments or suggestions you may have about the changes.

If you’d like to join us, please register by completing the registration form on the Human Resources home page. USS will be in touch to confirm your registration.

Presentations will be held in the Gulbenkian cinema, 18 May at 3.30pm and Woolf Lecture Theatre, 19 May at 9.30am.

Edward Kanterian articles mark the Armenian Genocide

Dr Edward Kanterian, from the Department of Philosophy, has just been published in two Swiss news outlets writing in remembrance of the Armenian genocide under the Ottoman Empire in 1915. April marked the 100-year anniversary of the atrocity.

The first piece was published in the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung [Zurich New Newspaper], writing about the recent developments in the research of the genocide. The article, in German, can be read online.

In the second piece, in the Swiss Jewish weekly Tachles [Essence], Edward examines the recollections of the survivors, as well as the known facts about the genocide. A copy of the article, again in German, can be found on Edward’s own site.

The articles have been widely translated and shared. For example, the Russian version can be found on News.am and an Armenian version can also be found on News.am.

Thank and Give event 2015

The University will be hosting a Thank and Give (TAG) week from 11 to 15 May, to raise awareness of the impact of philanthropy at Kent.

The main activity will be taking place on Friday 15 May, a day on which large gift tags will be placed on items around the Canterbury and Medway campuses which have been gifted to the University. The event will highlight many of the items which have been kindly donated to the University over the past 50 years, and which now form part of the campus landscape.

To find out more about the tagged items, please visit www.kent.ac.uk/thankandgive.

XYZ Projection Mapped Installation

Free art installation taking place on Monday 11 May, 19.00-21.00, in the Galvanising Shop, Chatham Historic Dockyard.

XYZ is a Projection Mapped Art Installation, displaying the visual creations of Boxcat a local VJ. The projections on to large geometric sculptures display the mapping capability available and the entire environment can be controlled by the audience using a MIDI controller, essentially creating the opportunity to personalise the installation.

Creative Events: Design and Production student, Bethany Tabeart has designed this event in order to promote Boxcat and provide the opportunity to get hands on with projection mapping software.

Projection Mapping is perfect for visual bands and mobile DJs, so if this applies to you, come along and see how Boxcat can enhance your live performances!

Even if you are not into the tech side the visual impact of Boxcats designs are reason enough to come down. The event has been designed to showcase the possibilities available to many local venues, DJs, Promoters, Bars and club nights so that they can see the benefits of using visuals.

This is a good chance to come down, talk to our creative team, play with software, learn a few handy techniques, have a drink and find out what we can do for you!

Last chance to sign up for tomorrow’s Medway Athena SWAN Event

The Athena SWAN Event on 7th May aims to answer a few questions you might have:

  • Can Athena SWAN make any difference?
  • Why should the School be involved in Athena SWAN?
  • What do I need to know about promotion, even if I’m not ready to apply yet?
  • How do I, as an ECR, go about career planning?

The answer to the first couple of questions might be suggested by the event’s theme: Good Practice Benefits All. Working to the Athena SWAN principles, means working in a place where all staff are valued. This will be elaborated on in the panel discussion and Lenna Cumberbatch, Diversity Manager at the Royal Society, will give her perspective on the issues in the keynote address

The last two questions will be explored in the workshop sessions on Promotion and Career Planning for Early Career Researchers (and those wondering what their next step should be).

The event starts in the Rochester Boardroom at 09:30, will run until 12:45, and includes lunch. To find out more, and register for the event, go to the Athena SWAN website. Places are limited. http://www.kent.ac.uk/human-resources/athenaswan/awareness-days/medway2015.html
