Economics degrees are popular with a wide range of employers and economics graduates go on to work in both the public and private sectors. The largest employer of economists is the Civil Service through the Government Economic Service (GES), which recruits over 100 new graduates into assistant economist posts each year. The Bank of England also has an economist stream within its graduate development programme. Many other economists are employed in banking and finance (retail and investment banks; insurance firms; brokerage firms; accountancy, asset management and hedge funds), management consultancies and professional services, charitable and not-for profit organisations, research institutes and think tanks.
