U.N.I (You and I) Protect: See something? Say something. Do something! Make a difference.

Places are now available on U.N.I (You and I) Protect workshops running in March 2018.

All of us can take action to protect each other and the wider University community to help promote a culture of dignity and respect at Kent. This programme will help you recognise and challenge problematic and harmful behaviour, such as abuse or sexual harassment.

On completion of the course participants will understand what a ‘bystander’ is and be empowered to be able to intervene in situations safely and with confidence.

The workshops will run on Friday mornings from 10.00 to 11.30 during weeks 20, 21 and 22. All students who complete the course will receive 15 Employability Points.

EasterZone sports camps for kids

Kent Sport has the perfect way to keep your children entertained this Easter, with five days of professional sports coaching, led by qualified and DBS checked coaches and supported by sports supervisors.

If your children are aged five to 14 and would enjoy taking part in a variety of sporting activities on a daily basis, including football, kwik cricket, tag rugby, hockey and tennis, then book them onto EasterZone 2018! An introduction to new sports and activities will be on offer along with the opportunity for children to develop their skills in specific sports and make new friends in a fun environment.

Prices for EasterZone are £35 per day or £130 per week. University of Kent staff and student discounts are available. Late pick-ups until 5pm are also available for an extra £10 per day per child.

Closing date for applications will be Sunday 18 March 2018 and we will be unable to accept bookings after this date.

Changes to senior leadership structures

The Vice-Chancellor has made two changes to the senior leadership structures at the University.

Firstly, the Executive Group plus Deans (EG+) will, from 1 March, become the Extended Executive Group (EEG). The membership will now comprise: EG; Director of Human Resources; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Dean of the Faculty of Social Science; Dean of the Faculty of Science; Dean of the Graduate School; Dean for Internationalisation; Dean for Medway; Academic Registrar; Director of Estates; Director of Information Services; Director of Commercial Services; and Director of Student Services.

Secondly, Managers’ Forum has been renamed the Senior Leadership Forum. Its membership includes: Executive Group, Deans, Heads of School, Directors of Professional Service Departments, Heads of Centres and Medway representatives.

The Executive Group (EG) itself remains unchanged with its membership comprising: Vice-Chancellor and President; Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost; Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education); Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation); and the Director of Finance. The Secretary to the Council is in attendance.

Study Plus course offers insight into child protection

Study Plus is offering the chance to take part in the Centre for Child Protection’s award-winning simulations, which offer a safe way to explore child protection situations, for free.

Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the simulation scenario and consider the actions of the characters during the course – KE157: Introduction to Care Proceedings via Simulation Learning: “myCourtroom: Rosie’s Family Goes to Court”.

“MyCourtroom” is an interactive and immersive simulation covering aspects of private and public law that continues the story of its character, Rosie. Built in partnership with Cafcass, ‘MyCourtroom’ is based on realistic scenarios designed to trigger discussions and decisions around court skills – specifically, safe practice, best practice, giving evidence, being cross examined and making assessment decisions to ensure positive outcomes for the child.

On successful completion of this course students will be able to

Appreciate key concerns raised by child protection practitioners around court work skills
Understand the difference between private and public law settings
Consider the different roles and expertise in courts
Reflect on direct work with children whose families are involved in proceedings
Start contemplating skills to provide evidence or be cross examined in public law proceedings

This is an exciting opportunity to learn about a difficult topic and consider how we should respond in the 21st century using a relevant evidence base and technological know-how.

The course takes place on Wednesday 28 February 2018 (Week 19) from 13.00-16.00.

Resounding success for the first-ever professional speed-networking event at Kent

The first-ever strictly professional speed-networking event at Kent was a great success, attracting more than 130 colleagues.

The networking events took place on 14 February across both the Medway and Canterbury campuses. The Kent Colleagues Connect organising team was delighted with the take-up and the diversity of participating colleagues, representing schools and central departments, academic and professional services staff.

This new initiative is part to the 2018 Kent Colleagues Connect programme which offers a number of opportunities for colleagues at the University to get to know each other’s roles better through informal meetings.

The next event will be “Coffee with Colleagues”, which will open for registration next month and will allow participants to invite a colleague they do not know very well, or at all, to discuss each other’s roles over a complimentary cup of coffee (or tea!). Watch this space for information about when and how to take advantage of this offer!

HEAT team take on the hottest, shortest sponsored walk ever!

Jayne Lawson and Chris Laming, from the aptly named HEAT Service, are bracing themselves for a barefoot walk over red-hot wood embers heated to around 800 degrees, to raise vital funds for Pilgrims Hospices in East Kent.

The Pilgrims Hospices Firewalk in Canterbury, the first in a series of four challenge events in March this year, takes place on Friday 2 March at the University of Kent Sports Pavilion. Contrary to popular belief there are no ‘tricks’, illusions or special materials involved in the Firewalk, just participants, their nerve and the flames, and Jayne and Chris can’t wait to face the challenge and confront their fears!

Pilgrims Hospices’ vision is that everyone should have access to the services they need to cope with illness that cannot be cured; providing free of charge hospice care and a range of additional support services for patients and their families. But with only 23 per cent of funding coming from the NHS, Pilgrims Hospices rely on charitable donations and fundraising to continue their invaluable work.

Every penny raised makes an inordinate difference at the most difficult time in people’s lives, so if you can support Jayne and Chris in raising much needed funds for this incredible charity by making a donation, please do so by visiting Jayne’s Just Giving page or Chris’s Just Giving page. Information for new postgraduate students

The Graduate School aims to ensure that your academic and social interests are appropriately provided for within the University wherever you are based.

Professor Paul Allain (Dean of the Graduate School) and his team, work in partnership with academic schools, faculties, central service departments and the Students’ Union to enhance the quality of the postgraduate student experience across all campuses and European centres to create a vibrant postgraduate community.

The Graduate School also supports a wide range of activities enabling postgraduates to promote their research interests and studies as well as opportunities to meet and socialise.

In addition to the initiatives highlighted below please keep an eye on the Graduate School’s events calendar for further information.

The Graduate School is located on the third floor of the Cornwallis East building on the Canterbury campus, with offices for its staff and a postgraduate training room. There is also an adjacent networking space which postgraduates can used for socialising and study.

The GradPost newsletter

The quarterly postgraduate newsletter (The GradPost) is supported and coordinated by the Graduate School. Postgraduate students can join the GradPost editorial team and/or contribute articles for publication in the newsletter. Further information about the GradPost can be found online. Postgraduate Community Experience Awards

Postgraduate students have the opportunity to bid for funding up to £1,500 via the Postgraduate Community Experience Awards to coordinate their own events and projects aimed at enhancing the postgraduate experience at Kent. Proposals for funding are required to have an interdisciplinary and/or external focus.

Projects funded previously have included a cross-disciplinary Latin American Society and Research Network, an interdisciplinary conference on Social Movement, and a short story reading group.

Postgraduate students will be notified when the awards are open for applications during the course of the academic year.

Postgraduate Festival

The annual Postgraduate Festival in the summer term provides our students with the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience, network with their peers from across the University and attend academic talks. Global Skills Award

The Global Skills Award programme for postgraduate taught Master’s students which comprises of a range of lectures on global issues and a series of workshops, has been specifically designed to improve your employability in a competitive job market. The programme is free and those who successfully complete the programme will receive an award certificate.

Researcher Development Programme

The Researcher Development Programme for postgraduate researchers is coordinated by the Graduate School.

The programme provides a range of workshops and online training opportunities designed to enhance your skills as a researcher and prepare you for a variety of careers.

The coverage of the programme has been developed in line with Vitae’s Researcher Development Framework and it reflects the UK Research Councils’ aims to develop exceptionally skilled researchers for the 21st century.

PhD students will be notified in September about booking a place on one of our ‘Kick-start your PhD’ Workshops.

Postgraduate Handbooks

All new postgraduate students will receive a copy of the 2018-19 Postgraduate Handbook at the induction. You can also download a copy online or pick one up from the Graduate School.

The handbooks contain useful information about postgraduate study and research at Kent, details of academic and regulatory processes as well as local information for students who are new to Kent.
