FDM Assessment Centre Skills Workshop

The FDM Group and the School of Economics will be running a session on assessment centre skills next Friday (16th February) at 12noon. Many graduate recruiters and graduate schemes use assessment centres in their recruitment process, and this will be a great opportunity to learn hints and tips about how to navigate this kind of application and assessment process. Attending this session will also earn you 10 Employability Points.

FDM Group is a global professional services provider, specialising in training and providing consultants in IT and business. They receive over 30,000 graduate applications every year and are at the forefront of cutting edge recruitment and selection techniques.

Defence analysis – alumni presentation

You are warmly invited to attend a talk by Sam Cranny-Evans, a graduate of the School and now a defence analyst at IHS Jane’s. Sam is coming to speak about his research into the new methods Russia and its armed forces are using to fight wars and exert influence around the world.

Sam will be coming back to campus later this term to talk about how his War Studies degree helped prepare him for his career. This will be a good opportunity for you to hear from a former student about one type of career that is open to History and Military History students, before hearing about how your degree can contribute to and prepare you for this sort of work.

If you are interested in this subject or a career in defence analysis, do come along to Eliot Lecture Theatre 2 at 6pm on Friday 9th March.

Lawyers in Government: Legislation Workshop

Government lawyers operate at the cutting edge of law and politics, delivering legal solutions that impact upon the lives of millions. Their work is diverse, challenging, unique and often headline news.

On Wednesday 31 January 2018, from 2pm – 3.30pm, government lawyers will deliver an interactive workshop around the passage of a Bill through Parliament. Participants will represent the lawyers working within different government organisations and will get an interesting and practical insight into the unique role which government lawyers play in the legislative process.

This workshop is designed to be accessible to both law students and students of other disciplines.

Paid work: Student Research Assistant with Dr Andrew Cohen

school-of-history-uok-logoThe School of History is seeking to appoint a Student Research Assistant to support Dr Andrew Cohen with his research project, ‘’Labour Migration and Labour Relations in South and southern Africa, c.1900-2000’.

The successful applicant will join Dr Cohen and another Student Research Assistant on this project, and will be expected to undertake a variety of tasks, including:

  • The cataloguing of research materials
  • Obtaining research materials from archives
  • Support for the organisation of conference and other research events
  • Digitisation of records and other sources
  • Support for editorial work (standardising footnotes etc.)
  • Undertaking basic research tasks

Guest speaker: Daniel Trup, United Nations legal counsel – 11am, 6th Dec, TLT

The Kent International Law Society and the Model UN Society have extended an invitation to all students and staff to an event they have organised for 11am next Wednesday (6th December) in the Templeman Lecture Theatre.

Daniel Trup is a Kent alumnus now working in New York as a lawyer for the United Nations. Mr Trup will speak about his experiences and numerous postings, from prosecuting war crimes in former Yugoslavia to working in the internal justice system within the UN. This will no doubt be an excellent event, and of particular interest to anyone considering a career in the law and its associated professions in the future. All are welcome to attend.

Volunteers Wanted – Age of Revolutions Project

Dr Ben Marsh is currently looking for volunteers who are interested in taking part in the Age of Revolutions Project that will be running between 2017 and 2020.

The University of Kent scheme will match student volunteers up with appropriate projects for their interests, skills, time availability, and ambitions, with the possibility of student placements (e.g. travelling to work in museums or archives for short periods), project work (e.g. writing descriptive content or designing artwork for digital resources), and other activities supporting research or work with schools.

We will be running a range of trips and workshops, including a discounted visit to Waterloo in February, and the first placements are expected to begin in Spring 2018 but opportunities will run through 2019.

Attached is a call for volunteers, containing more information about the project, and a short application form which anyone interested should complete and return to Dr Marsh by Monday 13th November 2017.

Coffee-shop drop-in – Civil Service Fast Stream

Sarah Hunter, a Kent alumni (see her graduate profile here) and a member of the Civil Service Fast Stream scheme, has offered to meet one-on-one with students interested in a career with the Civil Service. Whether you are a final-year student preparing your application, or still considering your options for the future, Sarah will be able to inform you about the Civil Service, the application to the fast stream, and where it can lead.

These are bookable sessions, each for twenty minutes, running from 11am-12noon and 3pm-4pm on Thursday 19th October.

If you aren’t able to get to one of these one-on-one sessions, Sarah and other Fast Stream ambassadors will be in the Keynes Atrium throughout the day.

Guest Post: Enactus Kent

Kent Union supports over a hundred and fifty student-run societies and sports clubs. Getting involved in any society or club can be great for your employability, but one of the most relevant is Enactus Kent, part of the worldwide Enactus volunteering organisation. Jameela Ahmed from Enactus Kent would like to introduce you to the work they are doing in Canterbury to help change people’s lives, and to tell you how you can get involved. Paid positions – Student Fundraiser

The University is looking for students that want an exciting and challenging job, representing the University and raising money for funds that will help protect and increase opportunities for their peers.

The Development Office runs fundraising telephone campaigns in order to> raise money for the Kent Opportunity Fund, which helps to support students. It does that by providing scholarships, supporting students going through financial trouble and helping to finance student projects. As a Student Fundraiser you will be contacting alumni and helping to raise money for these causes.

Applicants should be comfortable on the phone, confident and willing to speak positively about their experiences at the University of Kent.

The University plans to recruit twenty-one Student Fundraisers, and the fundraising campaign will being on Saturday 28th October, and run until Sunday 26th November. Callers will be asked to work two shifts per week (6-9pm) and either a Saturday or Sunday (12-5).

Paid Work – Student EP Ambassador

The University’s Enterprise Hub, which runs the Employability Points scheme, is currently looking to hire a Student EP Ambassador for the forthcoming academic year.

This is a paid position (£500 per term, 5-hours per week), for one student to work closely with academic schools, professional services and student societies to promote the EP Scheme to current Kent students at both Canterbury and Medway campuses. In the past, EP Ambassadors have attended networking events, held pop-ups, delivered shout-outs and much more.
