Access Advisory Group at Walmer Castle

The English Heritage team at Walmer Castle are interested in setting up a Community Access Advisory Group to support a new project called ‘Rediscovering the Pleasure Grounds.’ They are looking for individuals who have mobility, learning, or sensory impairments to be involved to ensure that the adaptations, activities, intern and volunteering opportunities that will come out of this project are accessible to everyone. Walmer Castle, an English Heritage property in Deal, are seeking to form a Community Access Advisory Group. The purpose of the group is to obtain feedback on an exciting project called ‘Rediscovering the Pleasure Grounds’ which will start in 2018 (subject to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund). The team has been working with an access advisor during the development of the plans to restore the gardens but English Heritage would also like to create their own Community Access Advisory Group.

Graduate position – Documentation Officer, Maidstone Museum

Maidstone Museums are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious person to work with collections across Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, Tyrwhitt Drake Museum of Carriages and the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regimental Museum in order to support the overall service purpose of enabling and broadening access to engage communities, inspire learning, and to disseminate knowledge.

The successful candidate will contribute to delivery of a high quality customer focused museum service by undertaking documentation and registration duties by being responsible for managing the effective administration of all records relating the museums’ collections in line with best practice Spectrum and Accreditation Standards.

They will be an effective communicator and should be able to communicate clearly and concisely, be well-organised, professional and flexible, with the ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own initiative.

Volunteering: Exhibition Guide at the Royal Engineers Museum

Are you out-going and love meeting people? You could be just the person we are looking for to greet and offer visitors further information about the temporary exhibition at the Museum this summer.

‘The Mechanicals’ temporary exhibition will be at the Museum from 25th July – 3rd September. Your role would involve meeting and greeting visitors to the exhibition, explaining about the exhibits and assisting the Learning Team with the activities for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition consists of hand-crafted automata that are displayed alongside hands-on exhibits that show the basic mechanisms involved in making the automata work, simplifying the principles behind drives, pulleys, ratchets and levers. The exhibition is accompanies by family friendly activities, creating simple machines inspired by the Mechanicals.

Volunteering Opportunity: Picture Margate Project Assistant

thanetmargate-museumThe Margate Museum is looking for a volunteer to work as a Project Assistant to help them with their Heritage Lottery funded project to create a catalogue and digitised record of their collection of prints, drawings, and watercolour paintings. The volunteer will also be carrying out preventative conservation measures, and would be involved in organising events to showcase and celebrate the museum’s collection.

This volunteer would be asked to give a few hours each week to the project. Training will be provided by the Museum’s staff. This would be an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience of working in a key role on a valuable local history project.

As this role is on a voluntary basis, do bear in mind that you can have your expenses reimbursed through the Kent Experience of Work bursary. However, the role description notes that Margate Museum is also able to help with travel expenses.

Internship: Commonwealth War Graves Commission Centenary Internships

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is looking for applicants for its new internship programme, starting this year.

The CWGC Centenary Interns will join the Commission for four months, based in France and Belgium, to welcome visitors to some of the CWGC’s most well-known sites. These will include the CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery near Ieper (Ypres), which will be the focus of the UK Government commemorations of the Centenary of Passchendaele: Third Battle of Ypres in July 2017.

Applications must be received by 10pm on Friday 20th January. Applicants must be fully available between June & late September/early October to travel to France and Belgium. Some French language skills would be beneficial but are not essential.
