school-of-history-uok-logoThe School of History is seeking to appoint a Student Research Assistant to support Dr Andrew Cohen with his research project, ‘’Labour Migration and Labour Relations in South and southern Africa, c.1900-2000’.

The successful applicant will join Dr Cohen and two other Student Research Assistants on this project, and will be expected to undertake a variety of tasks, including:

  • The cataloguing of research materials
  • Obtaining research materials from archives
  • Support for the organisation of conference and other research events
  • Digitisation of records and other sources
  • Support for editorial work (standardising footnotes etc.)
  • Undertaking basic research tasks

Paid work: Student Research Assistant with Dr John Wills

school-of-history-uok-logoFollowing on from the advert for SRAs to support Dr Emily Manktelow’s project (closing date 23:59 on Sunday 29th January), the School of History is also seeking to appoint a Student Research Assistant to support Dr John Wills with his research project, ‘Depictions of America in Videogames’.

The SRA on this project will be expected to undertake a variety of tasks, including:

  • Researching specific game titles and American themes
  • Obtaining research materials from (mostly online) archives and websites
  • Identifying and organising research materials
  • Potentially playing through titles or making notes on game footage
  • Creating game-related bibliographies
  • Reporting on findings
  • Support for research and editorial work (standardising footnotes etc.)

Paid work: Student Research Assistants with Dr Emily Manktelow

school-of-history-uok-logoThe School of History is seeking to appoint three Student Research Assistants to support Dr Emily Manktelow with her research project, ‘The Local and the Global at Canterbury Cathedral’.

This project aims to explore the colonial and global past of Canterbury Cathedral through the empire-related memorials within the cathedral and the archive holdings relating to St. Augustine’s missionary college – an organisation designed to train Anglican missionaries for posts around the British Empire. The project will culminate in an exhibition hosted by the Cathedral, and the creation of public engagement resources on the topic of the project.

What are Student Research Assistants?

The Student Research Assistant scheme is run by the School of History, and gives give you the opportunity to be hired as research assistants (RAs) to work with academics in the School on their research projects. As an RA, you would be contracted as an employee of the School, and paid the National Living Wage for all work undertaken. You would undertake a range of duties to help further the aims of the project, which could include archival research, helping organise a conference and exhibition, and undertaking your own research and learning more about a particular subject to inform your work.
