Who would I work for?

Social Workers are employed by both public and private sector companies. Many companies offer an ASYE Year (Assessed and Supported Year in Employment) for Newly Qualified Social Workers, which aims to provide additional support during the first year of employment and to develop skills, knowledge, and experience.

You could work in the Public Sector for local government or the NHS, or within the private sector for a registered charity.  Agency work is also available.


Do I need a qualification?

To practise as a social worker, you must be registered with Social Work England. To register with Social Work England, you first need to successfully complete an approved degree or postgraduate programme in social work. Courses take three or four years full time. There is also an option to do a degree apprenticeship in social work.
