There are many Societies that you can join on campus, you can search here for groups that may be of interest to you. The societies listed below are only a few of the ones you can join, we have listed them as we know that they have been popular with our LSSJ students but there are many many more. You could even start your own or join a society that is more based on your hobbies rather than your studies, they are also a great opportunity to meet people!

The 93% Club Kent

The 93% Club Kent is a student-led society focusing on social mobility and improving university experiences for the 93.7% of state school students at the University of Kent.

Students attending university from state schools often lack the same level of social, human or cultural capital as their more privileged peers from privately educated backgrounds. These differences can often be attributed to the lack of opportunities for extra-curricular programmes available for these students at school. These activities are proven to provide personal enrichment and the skills students learn from them are absolutely crucial for broadening their horizons both professionally and personally.

We aim to connect, upskill and empower state-educated and underrepresented students. In doing this, we hope to level the playing field between private and state-educated students, ensuring that UKC students have the best chance when entering the graduate world. In doing so, we provide skill development events and workshops, networking opportunities and professional advice and resources.

Serious about social mobility.

Image previewUKC Amnesty International Society
UKC Amnesty International is a student-led group that is passionate about promoting human rights, spreading awareness about human rights violations and making a difference.

Last year we organised a wide variety of events and collaborations such as: our refugee awareness month with STAR; `Teardrop Island: A History of Ethnic Suppression` an informative discussion in collaboration with the Tamil Society; our committee-led campaigning workshop;  the ´Anti- Climate Change Challenge´ with prizes; and, `Living More Sustainably´ an event in collaboration with the Vegan Society. In addition, we also participated in Amnesty International´s events, such as Write for Rights and the annual Student Conference.

We aim to spread awareness and educate members about human rights and their violations. We will provide our members with the tools to speak up, campaign and make a difference. We strive to create an encouraging community, where creative ideas and enthusiasm are welcomed and support towards our fight for human rights is appreciated.

Kent Art Law Society
“The Kent Art Law Society is an interdisciplinary academic society, hosting members and committee members from all academic backgrounds. Together we promote and discuss the vast law pertaining to art and cultural heritage, the intersection between art and the law in a professional field as well as art which has the subject or context of law and justice.

Last year we collaborated with other established societies in order to provide activities and events which intrigued both the artists and lawyers at the University of Kent.

The committee aims to increasingly engage with its members to provide academic webinars and discussions, as well as a range of interactive activities and social events.

To law students this society provides an alternative, close-knit community based upon a unique subject area that is at times overlooked in the curriculum in addition to an opportunity to interact and influence your society.”
Alan Evans last year’s President and Cofounder

The Kent BAME Law Society (KBLS)
Greetings All,

The Kent BAME Law Society (KBLS) is a newly formed academic society that wishes to support students from all disciplines with their academic studies and future careers in Law.  We want to provide a safe and comfortable community for students, where they feel both welcomed and empowered. In the upcoming academic year, KBLS plans to host various social and academic events, such as speed networking and diversity empowerment speeches. Furthermore, something that is uniquely exclusive to KBLS is our podcast, which we plan to launch once a term. These podcasts will highlight some of the most pressing issues that students face, such as managing life at university and life after university. We also plan to distribute fortnightly newsletters to our members, highlighting some of our upcoming events and important information about academic and career opportunities.
These are simply just a few of the reasons why you should consider joining us at KBLS. If you are looking to join an academic society that you will feel comfortable in,  heard and appreciated then please consider KBLS, as we aim to do just that.
We look forward to greeting many new members and growing the KBLS family this year.

The Current Affairs Society (CAS)

The Current Affairs Society (CAS) is one of the oldest societies at the University of Kent, founded in 1965, the same year the School of Politics and International Relations was instituted. CAS brings the most interesting and inspiring speakers to Kent. In the past, CAS hosted Current and Former Presidents, MPs, NGOs spokesmen, Journalists and many other inspiring and mind opening personalities.  The topics of the events will be broad, ranging from Politics, to Business, from Art to Environmental matters, in order to cover a wide range of subjects that reflect a wider range of students, and collaborate with more societies. The format of the events varies according to the topic and the confirmed guest speakers, and it usually takes the form of panel discussions, lectures, conversations and debates, always followed by a Q&A session and a networking session with refreshments. Past CAS Members now have key jobs at national and EU Institutions, Diplomatic establishments, and worldwide companies. To read more please visit the Kent Union site here.

Enactus Kent

Enactus Kent is a part of Enactus, an international non-profit organisation aimed at university students, in order to make a difference in the community while developing skills to become socially responsible leaders in the future. Currently, Enactus has 70,000 students spread across 36 countries working on nearly 5000 projects a year. We create business projects whose primary aim is to solve problems in communities around the world while being economically socially and environmentally sustainable.  In Peru, we brought the socially isolated elderly community together through our soap and honey business, providing them with extra income and teaching them new skills.  In Canterbury, we provide work experience to homeless individuals by training them to serve as tour guides, giving tourists their unique perspective and experience of the city.

We have many more projects as well as teams for marketing, events and human resources which you can be a part of! Join a team or start your very own project with us. To learn more, visit www.enactuskent.org

Human Rights Law Society (HRLS)

UKC HRLS aims to connect people who are passionate about the human rights. As a student led society we try to apply law to recent global issues from women’s rights to death penalty. We also aim to create a discussion around new and interrelated areas of human rights such as business and human rights, Privacy law, data protection and it’s interrelation with human rights. We reflect the voice of our student members without any certain affiliations. Membership is free and open to all the Kent University students who wish to be part of the conversation. Our passion is applying law to current human right issues around the world. We pride ourselves in our independent modern view untethered by outside affiliations. Articles and think pieces are accepted from the UKC students or anyone who’s looking for a platform to share their knowledge. We accept manuscript on the topics related to Human Rights and the word limit for the manuscript is 800-1000 words.
