What is the Turing Scheme?
The Turing Scheme was launched in 2021 by the UK government to support international study and work abroad. It was launched to replace the Erasmus+ programme, which the UK has left following its departure from the EU (NB ongoing Erasmus projects already commenced at the point of the UK departure from the EU have been extended. For Kent this means staff/student Erasmus activities and funding will continue to 31 May 2023).
The Turing Scheme places a strong focus on widening participation with the aim of increasing participation rates among students from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in international mobility schemes such as Erasmus.
The UK government has confirmed funding for the Turing Scheme for the academic years 2021-22 to 2024-25 inclusive.
What does the Scheme offer me?
The Turing Scheme provides UK universities with funding to offer grants to students to carry out an approved study or work placement anywhere in the world.
Your international study or work placement must last for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of 12 months. It can be a part of your degree or a co-curricular activity (for example a summer school, internship or volunteering).
If you have special educational needs and/or a disability the Turing Scheme provides additional funding. There is also additional funding for disadvantaged students (eligibility criteria for this is set by the UK government).

Turing funding for Kent students, 2021-22
Degrees with a term/year abroad/year in industry
Turing funding is available for Kent students taking part in an approved term/year abroad in 2021-2022 outside of Europe (NB Erasmus funding is available for eligible term/year abroad placements in Europe).
International Partnerships is in direct contact with these students and their Schools.
All other degrees (UG/PG/PhD)
Turing funding is available for Kent students who wish to carry out shorter-term placements outside of their degree.
Priority will be given to students from underrepresented groups in support of the Turing Scheme objective of widening participation (see below).
Current Kent students can apply for this funding under our new Go Abroad Bitesize initiative with application deadlines of 5 Dec 2021, 6 Feb 2022, and 3 Apr 2022.
Short-term placement funding eligibility
To be eligible for funding, placements must:
- Involve study, work or volunteering
- Take place outside the UK (excluding the University of Kent’s European centres)
- Take place at a partner university or other approved organisation
- Be approved by the University of Kent (they do not need to be part of a Kent degree)
- Take place while the student is still registered at Kent
- Last for a minimum of four weeks (NB shorter placements may be eligible for Erasmus funding; please see Go Abroad Bitesize for details)

Turing Scheme student grant amounts 2021—22
The amounts available for students are set out below.
Living costs – standard grant rates

In addition to living costs, “disadvantaged students” may be offered the following:
- Travel grants of up to £1360, depending on distance between home and destination
- Additional travel expenses can also be claimed, including costs of visas, passports, health insurance, covid testing etc.
- Partial/full contribution to programme fees charged by the host organisation
Additional funding for students with special educational needs and/or a disability:
- Up to 100% of actual costs for support directly related to additional needs.
- This funding will also cover preparatory visits to ensure participants will be able to equally access and take part in all elements of a placement.
Please note all amounts quoted are the maximum amounts that may be offered. Actual amounts offered to Kent students will be subject to the funding available. Funding amounts offered to students will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
