As you may know, last year the School became one of only eight history departments to receive an Athena SWAN bronze award in recognition of our commitment to equality across gender and all the protected characteristics. But we aren’t stopping here! In our quest to make the School a place where everyone, students and staff, can achieve their best through a supportive environment and equal opportunities, we are already thinking about applying for a silver award.
This is where you come in: we need student input and feedback to help make sure this process is about everyone in the School, not just staff. Our two fantastic student members of the School’s EDI committee have stood down, and the School is hoping to recruit several students to take their places.
Student members of this committee need to attend one or two meetings a term, read the paperwork in advance of each meeting, and act as a point of contact between the committee and the wider student body. This might mean helping to liaise about events to celebrate diverse history, or advising us on how best to address a challenge. This isn’t onerous, but it is a role where you can really make a difference – suggestions made by our last student reps are in the Athena SWAN action plan are being rolled out at the moment.
It also offers a chance to develop employability skills – this role involves you working on a team with academics and professional services staff to design and implement equality, diversity and inclusivity policies.
For more information, please contact the School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Director, Dr Amy Blakeway on historyedi@kent.ac.uk.
We are hoping to recruit two undergraduate members, one taught postgraduate member, and one research postgraduate member to represent the entirety of the School’s student body. To apply, please send a short statement of 500 words on how you would advance equality in the School of History to historyedi@kent.ac.uk.
