Sport and fitness on the Canterbury campus

All our facilities are open to staff, students, alumni and the public and our venues are available for hire for sporting and non-sporting events and conferences. Sports Centre

Located near the heart of the Canterbury campus, the Sports Centre services all users of the fitness suite, fitness and dance studio, sports halls and the Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic. At the reception desk you can sign up for membership with Kent Sport.

The Sports Centre facilities include:

  • Three large sports halls for a variety of activities with viewing balconies
  • Large, air-conditioned fitness suite split over two floors
  • Fitness and dance studio
  • Two squash courts with viewing balcony
  • Matted martial arts training area
  • Boxing and combat sports training area
  • The Kent Sport Physiotherapy Clinic offering physiotherapy and sports massage appointments for all
  • Separate male and female shower and changing rooms with toilet facilities
  • Universal and accessible shower and changing rooms, and baby changing facilities
  • Staff offices
  • First aid room
  • Reception area with lift to first floor
  • Sports café offering hot and cold refreshments
  • Large student and staff car park for permit holders
  • Pay and display car park (fee reimbursement for public Kent Sport members, up to two hours, please inquire at reception)

Fitness suite

Kent Sport has some of the highest-quality fitness equipment in the county, which is available to all members including students, staff, alumni and the public. View our Flickr album of photos of the fitness suite.

Our qualified fitness instructors are on hand to give advice and can provide health and fitness consultations (currently unavailable)

Fitness studio

The fitness and dance studio has enhanced lighting and sound and can be split in two for more intimate classes. The studio is an ideal environment for group exercise and has the capacity for a wide range of classes including Boxercise, spinning and Zumba. You can view the full timetable here.

Sports halls

Main hall

Multi-use double hall measuring 37 metres x 35 metres, with a sprung Taraflex floor. The main hall can accommodate the following sports:

  • Badminton – 8 courts
  • Basketball – 2 courts
  • Netball – 2 courts
  • Volleyball – 2 courts
  • Cricket – 2 net bays
  • Viewing balcony for spectators

Hall 2 and 3

Multi-use halls each measuring approximately 32 metres x 17 metres. Both halls can accommodate the following sports:

  • Badminton – 4 courts
  • Basketball – 1 court
  • 5-A-Side Football – 1 area
  • Netball – 1 court
  • Volleyball – 1 court

Squash courts

The squash facilities comprise of two standard-size courts, complete with viewing gallery.

Combat sports

At the Sports Centre we have a fully-matted room for martial arts training such as Karate, Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Please book by contacting the Sports Centre reception.

We also have a boxing and combat sports area above hall 2, featuring a boxing ring, bags and training equipment. Please book by contacting the Sports Centre reception.

The Pavilion

Located at the outdoor playing fields complex, opposite Parkwood accommodation, The Pavilion services all users of the artificial pitches, grass pitches, and the Cycle Hub.

The Pavilion indoor facilities include:

  • 10 self-contained changing rooms with under floor heating
  • Four officials changing rooms
  • Accessible changing room. Baby changing facilities also available
  • Seminar/meeting room
  • Sports development office
  • The Pavilion Café Bar social space with vending machines and viewing balconies overlooking both grass and artificial pitches
  • First aid room
  • Reception area
  • Lobby with lift to first floor
  • Large student and staff car park for permit holders
  • Pay and display car park (fee reimbursement for public Kent Sport members, up to two hours, please inquire at reception)

Pitches

3GX
The 3GX is a world-class pitch developed as a part of Kent Sport’s programme of ongoing sports facility expansion. The pitch enables back-to-back fixtures and training for rugby, football and American football and delivers the optimal playing conditions for matches from recreational to top-level rugby and football. It includes a spectator area and is fully flood lit. The 3GX pitch is bookable for Kent Sport members (1h 30mins max. per booking). Please book via The Pavilion reception.

3G
Members have access to a state-of-the-art 3G football pitch. This is a full-sized pitch capable of holding four 5-a-side games during tournaments. It has full floodlighting and a wide concourse area with tiered seating. The 3G pitch is bookable for Kent Sport members (1h 30mins max. per booking). Please contact the Pavilion or Sports Centre to book.

Astro

A recent site survey has ruled that our astro-turf pitch will need a full replacement. Therefore, this facility is currently closed, and will likely affect the 2021 season. We apologise for any inconvenience.
The astro-turf pitch was built during the redevelopment of the playing fields in 2005. It is a full size, sand-based pitch and can be used for football or hockey. It also has a wide concourse area with tiered seating.

Grass pitches
There are a number of grass pitches available at The Pavilion which can support recreational/match rugby.

Cycle Hub

The Cycle Hub provides short term bike hire for Kent Sport members for up to eight hours per day. See the Cycle Hub webpage for more details.

Cricket nets

There are two bay cricket nets outside the Pavilion, which are bookable for Kent Sport members (1h 30mins max. per booking). Please contact The Pavilion or Sports Centre to book.

Refreshments

There are refreshments available at the Sports Centre, offering a variety of hot and cold food and drinks. Social space open to everyone offers a relaxed environment in which to meet with friends.

The Pavilion Café Bar
The Pavilion Cafe Bar is available for private function hires with full catering services.

Sports Café

The café at the Sports Centre is open to everyone to enjoy delicious food and hot drinks while sitting in the spacious seating area.
