12 teams gathered in the Pavillion to participate in Kent Sport’s version of The Cube! Based off the former TV shows, teams participated in quick, jam-packed games, aiming to preserve all five of their lives throughout each task. The tasks required players to collaborate and problem solve to work together and keep as many lives as possible while also playing as fast as possible. In the Pavillion, 6 games were set up and teams went around to each one, aiming to complete the task within the time limit.
Game 1: 400cm Hurdles
In this game, one player from the team was blindfolded while the remaining players attempted to verbally guide them through various obstacles and over 3 hurdles before reaching the end and putting on a bib, all within 1 minute! This tasked proved tricky for many, with players hitting the cones and plastic balls laid out in front of them before attempting to make it over the hurdles.
Game 2: Clockwork
The next game was slightly less physically demanding and more about strategy and memory. The aim of this task was to go player by player and turning over a set of cards in order from ace to king. Each team member went one by one in a relay style race, running behind a board so their team members couldn’t see and flipping one card over. If guessed correctly, the same player would then get the chance to flip over another card, once an incorrect attempt was made, it would become the next player’s turn. Players had 3 minutes for this task, which seems simple but was proved to be difficult for many with multiple teams losing all 5 lives. Amusingly, teams attempted to work out a strategy to flip over the cards in order according to their placement in the clock formation, however the confusion once the game started caused players to repeatedly flip over the same (wrong) card and not progress in the task.
Game 3: Balloon Bucket Ball
This game was more physically demanding, with the aim being to keep a balloon afloat without hitting the barriers of the game (including the ceiling), while simultaneously picking up 20 plastic balls and placing them in a bucket. This game proved to be the most entertaining with non-participating team members cheering their teammate on from the sidelines. Teams got 3 attempts each, losing a life if unsuccessful within the 30 second time limit.
Game 4: Flip It and Sort It
A combination of skill, speed and memory were needed for the fourth game. In this game there was a cup on one table and then a set of cards laid out on another table. Players engaged in a game of flip cup, and only if successful were able to move on and turn over a card on the table, take a peek, and then flip it back over. As a team, the aim was to get a look at every card and place them in order from ace to king at the end of the time limit. This meant teams could lose lives by either not being skilful enough in flip cup or having poor memory. Many teams were successful, however it proved difficult for some.
Game 5: Blow Hockey
Teams went head to head in this (modified) game of hockey. Each team had 5 nerf bullets on a table, representing their five lives for the game. The opposing team aimed to either knock off the bullets or score a goal by blowing ping pong balls off the table through a straw. This made players work together in an attempt to eliminate the other team before they were eliminated themselves.
Game 6: UV Maze
This spy-like game once again required a member of the team to be blindfolded. The Pavillion seminar room was decked out in UV decorations with a maze taped out on the floor. The blindfolded player was placed alone in the room, while another stood just outside the door and was allowed to peek through the taped up window, with only small gaps being left to see through. This player then communicated to another player who was given a map and a walkie talkie to guide the blindfolded player on where to step to get through the maize to their intended target. Another challenging task
Moving on to Woody’s
At half time, all teams relocated to Woody’s to engage in more fun games, and successful teams moved on to compete in the quarter finals, semi-finals and ultimately the finals. In the quarter finals, each team’s knowledge of the Sports Development team was tested, having to categorize the members into topics like first job, birth place and nickname. In the semi-finals/finals teams went head to head in a number of tasks, including making paper airplanes, and stacking Jenga blocks in a tower.
Results:
In the end, the Flu Fighter were this year’s winners of The Cube! However, the DoNATS used their joker chip to double their points and gain a whopping 28 points for the event. Second place, was awarded to the Living La Vida Mocha, earning 19 points and in third were Living Keepers of the Keys with 18 points. No shows from Liquorice All Sports, Regulatory Rebels, Comms not Bombs and U Bunch O’ Kents forced them to use their free hit chips, securing them spots in the middle of the points table. Near the bottom, in order, were Return of the MAC, RISistence is Futile, SPPecials, Sofa Sitters, and then disappointingly Ins and Outs, losing all their lives and gaining 0 points. Thank you to everyone who showed up with enthusiasm and made the event an amazing one.
