Calling all future theatre critics

Application for the ENO Response mentoring programme is now open!

Here at the English National Opera, we run a critics’ training scheme, ENO Response, throughout our opera season at the London Coliseum theatre. We’ve just opened up the applications to find the next cohort of 10-12 writers for the upcoming season (September 2022-April 2023), and we’re getting in touch with you in case this opportunity is of interest to your students.

ENO Response offers budding, unpublished writers the opportunity to develop their critical writing skills by attending performances (for free!), reviewing world-class opera, and receiving personalised mentoring from industry professionals. Knowledge of opera isn’t required, but a desire to learn about it is!

Responders receive writing advice and feedback from industry mentors (including journalists and editors from: The Times, The i, the Financial Times and other national publications) through tailored sessions, build a portfolio of work and see their reviews published on the ENO website. They also have access to unique masterclasses to learn about journalism and opera. Applicants from across the UK are encouraged to apply, and reasonable travel expenses to and from reviewed performances will be reimbursed, and all masterclasses and mentoring sessions are conducted online. Applicants must be over the age of 18 but there is no maximum age.

The application is open until mid-August and you can find out more information via the links below. Please do forward this email with the link to the application to any of your students, alumni or contacts that you think might be interested in applying.
