Monday 29 November

CVs, Cover Letters and Application Forms – 11:00-12:00

Join this information session to find out the key things you need to include in your CV, application forms and cover letters. We will cover the do’s and don’ts and ways to tailor your documents to make you stand out.

Crisp Packet Recycling (Medway Campus) – 13:00-15:00

Student Services at Medway have been collecting crisp packets to raise funds for Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance. This emergency service is not government funded, it is a charity and relies on donations to keep running. The charity receives £2 per kilo of crisp packets, direct from the recycler. We are looking for student volunteers to spend a couple of hours folding crisp packets ready for shipment to the recycler. We will provide office space with a desk and disposable gloves so you don’t end up covered in crisp crumbs!

Study Plus: Planning Tools and Techniques with Kate Gardner – 13:30-15:00

By the end of this session you will have:

  • Explored your own skill level at planning and prioritising
  • Identified a range of tools to use to plan activities
  • Identified at least one tool/technique to trial in the coming weeks

Study Plus: Having difficult conversations hosted by Kate Gardner – 10:00-11:30

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • Explored the stages and causes of conflict
  • Identified strategies to enable difficult conversations
  • Examined their own conflict handling style
  • Understood the steps to take when having difficult conversations

Study Plus: Journaling for Wellbeing by Esther van Hout – 11:00-12:30

Research shows that journal writing has extensive health and wellbeing benefits, as well as being an effective way to help you plan the life you want. This workshop can help with situations as varied as gaining confidence in writing, exploring personal challenges or reigniting creativity.

  • Learn what journal writing is and how it can benefit mental wellbeing
  • Practise different journaling techniques, to focus your attention and express yourself through writing
  • Learn how journaling can help you with self-care, creativity and life-management

Study Plus: Emotional Intelligence hosted by Ali Whelan – 14:00-15:30

Overall objective = To provide an overview of Emotional Intelligence and how it underpins personal effectiveness.

Students can expect to come away:

  • Understanding of the 5 elements of EI
  • The importance and impacts of EI in the workplace and for career building
  • Actions they can take to increase their own EI

Careers in the Public Sector focussing on accessibility – 17:30 – 18:30

Digital Accessibility is a fast-growing industry focussed on helping everyone get access and be able to use online services. A big part of this work is ensuring that disabled users with a range of access needs can use services. This talk will focus on what the digital accessibility sector is, what kinds of skill sets being aware of digital accessibility requirements can improve and the breadth of job roles this affects. By learning about digital accessibility and incorporating relevant skills for your desired career path you can add another string to your bow when it comes to standing out from other applicants.

Wednesday 1 December

Careers and Applications for the Office for National Statistics – 12:00-13:00

The Office for National Statistics is the Statistical Institute for the UK, employing over 5000 people in a wide range of roles across the Technical, Analytical, Operational Delivery and Communications professions. Like most of the Civil Service, we use the Success Profiles framework for recruitment and selection, a method of giving fair and open recruitment across our roles.  In this session, we will talk about the application and selection process we use, debunk some of the myths and demystify some concerns for applicants, as well as talking to you about why the Civil Service is a great place to work and of course answering your many questions.

Volunteering in the Kent Community Oasis Garden (Canterbury) – 12:30 – 14:00

Come along and join us at KentCOG every other Wednesday from 1 -2pm. You will meet fellow students, learn new skills and get the most out of gardening, socialising and wellbeing opportunities. We also aim to run workshops supporting the local wildlife.

Please wear sturdy footwear, bring waterproofs (always be prepared for the wet weather!) There is shelter in the potting shed and also in the polytunnels.

All tools will be provided.

Study Plus: Travelling Virtually in Xi’an, China, the Ancient Capital of 13 Dynasties – A series of virtual workshops – 13:30-14:30

On top of language learning, this programme will give everyone insightful viewpoints on Xi’an ordinary people’s lives, delicious food, rich history, ancient and modern archaeology, ancient music, and traditional Piying Drama (Shadow Puppets) … and much more!

Workshop 4 takes everyone on a virtual tour to the Shaanxi History Museum which is regarded as the “Pearl of the Ancient Capital and the Treasure House of China”. The Xi’an Beilin Museum is known as “the treasure house of calligraphy art”. Follow the camera and you will have a “Treasure hunt” of the ancient Chinese civilization.

‘Resilience in a Post-Covid World’, 1 December 2pm-3pm (Canterbury)

 The first session on 1st December is in person, from 2pm to 3:30pm in room KS15 and available to book via the SSW Calendar now.

In this 90-minute informal collaborative workshop, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your experiences and learn practical techniques to support your wellbeing. The session aims to inspire and motivate, leaving you feeling more equipped and more positive about the future. You can also earn 10 employability points for attending.

The session is repeated on the following dates, all bookable now via TARGETconnect.

Part one of our three-part Excel series will explore the fundamentals of Excel by going through the implementation of formulas, referencing, tables, data cleaning, data validation and filtering. Ideal if you’re new to using the different features of Excel, or if you already have a basic understanding and looking to refresh your skills!

Join us for an online chat with alumni from the social science subjects at Kent who are now working in the Civil Service and are able to share invaluable information about their roles as well as Fast Stream recruitment advice through open, honest dialogue. At this event, we aim to highlight the range of careers within the Civil Service, helping you envision possibilities for yourself you may never have considered. The event wraps up with a Q&A session.

Study Plus: Understanding Leadership Styles with Ali Whelan – 10:00-11:30

Understand what we mean by leadership style, the importance of knowing your preferred style but when and how to use alternative styles. Also covered will be how to work effectively with the leadership style of your manager and the importance of understanding how leadership preferences and styles can help aid resilience.

We will cover:

    ● Leadership preference and adapting to be effective
    ● Effectively working under the influence of someone else’s leadership style
    ● Leadership styles and the connection to resilience

Study Plus: Digital Bootcamp Part 2 SQL by FDM – 14:00-15:30

Interested in coding but don’t know where to start? SQL is one of the most popular and lucrative programming languages in the world. In this session, we will tell you the benefits of learning SQL, with an overview of this language’s practical application. We’ll cover all the basic skills required for data management and analysis and how to query and manipulate datasets. In the webinar, we’ll provide you with an example business case so that you can write SQL statements and gain hands-on experience in the world of developers, analysts and data scientists.

Reasonable Adjustments and Embracing Disability and Inclusivity at the Office for National Statistics – 12:00-13:00

Here at Office for National Statistics, we are passionate about the power of our people, and our Strategy highlights our ambition to be inclusive in everything we do.
