When slimmer isn’t better: Be the XX

About Pay

University salaries have fallen in value by 20% against inflation since 2009.  Meanwhile pay for senior managers has grown at a rate beyond inflation, causing the Office for Students to put out a study earlier this year that calls for greater pay restraint at senior levels.

UCU’s claim for 2019/20 is RPI plus 3% or a minimum increase of £3,349 (whichever is greater).

“Other people in society are paid less than me: I don’t want to be greedy”

History does not indicate that agreeing to ill treatment results in better conditions for others.  Instead it only results in a race to the bottom.  Victory will set a standard for other public sector worker conditions.  Other trade unions were astonished and encouraged by the success of last year’s UCU campaign.
