SMFA’s Shona Illingworth, Fine Art Reader and Director of Graduate Studies, has been commissioned for Random Acts, Channel 4’s provocative and boundary pushing short film strand dedicated to the worlds of art, music, dance, animation, spoken word, performance, and every uncategorisable combination in between.

The widely exhibited Illingworth works across sound, film, video, photography, drawing and painting. Her work combines interdisciplinary research (particularly with emerging neuropsychological models of memory and critical approaches to memory studies) with publicly engaged practice.  She was shortlisted for the prestigious 2016 Jarman Award.

SMFA’s Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and acclaimed award-wining contemporary visual artist, Adam Chodzko, is one of 8 artists featured in Slow Violence, an exhibition, symposium and events developed collaboratively by UHArts and the Contemporary Arts Practice Group, School of Creative Arts, University of Hertfordshire.  The artists will reconsider the prevalent and far-reaching threat of climate change.  The Symposium, which is free, is Wednesday 29th November, 10.30am – 4pm and brings together a diverse roster of speakers from the fields of environmental psychology, visual arts and business. The Exhibition Opening Reception is also Wed 29th November, and then runs until 20^th January 2018.

Sarah Turner, Director of Research and Reader in Fine Art in the School of Music and Fine Art, is at the Nottingham Contemporary, Weekday Cross, Nottingham, NG1 2GB participating in a panel discussion on 12^th October, 6.30-8.30pm as part of the tour for her acclaimed film Public House, which is screening there 13-15th October.

Sarah Turner, Director of Research and Reader in Fine Art in the School of Music and Fine Art, is on the jury for the 2017 Aesthetica Short Film Festival Northern Film School Best Screenplay.

Founded in 2011, ASFF is an international film festival which takes place annually in York at the beginning of November. It a celebration of independent film from around the world, and an outlet for supporting and championing filmmaking.

The awards recognise outstanding talent in filmmaking practice, and are a prestigious accolade. The winning films are selected by a jury of industry experts, and are presented at the Closing Night Awards Ceremony. Previous winners at ASFF have gone on to achieve further award success, including wins at the Oscars (Stutterer, Benjamin Cleary, in 2016) and BAFTAs (The Bigger Picture, Daisy Jacobs, in 2015) and have broadened their audience beyond the film festival circuit. Sarah trained at St Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. She is an artist, filmmaker, writer, curator and academic. Her feature films include Ecology, 97mins, 2007, Perestroika, 118mins, 2009, (which featured in Tate Britain’s major survey: Assembly), and Perestroika:Reconstructed, conceived and executed as a gallery work (Carroll Fletcher Gallery, London, May 2013). Her latest feature, Public House, 96 mins, premiered in the Documentary competition, LFF 2015, nominated for the Grierson Award. Public House was re-mastered for wider audiences in 2016 and had is touring throughout 2017.

This annual prize  recognises and supports the most innovative UK-based artists working with moving image. STICKY THICK, the annual practice as research forum hosted by the School of Music and Fine Art, University of Kent, and the Sound-Image-Space Research Centre (SISRC), takes place on Wednesday 7th June 2017, 11am-5pm, in the Galvanising Shop Performance Space, Historic Dockyard Chatham.

The event brings together artists, writers, filmmakers, philosophers, composers, performers and researchers across disciplines to investigate practice as research as a continuing process of invention, and explores its capacity to generate dynamic and challenging modes of enquiry. Now in its 3^rd year this annual event forms a key part of the research culture and programme at SMFA, providing a platform for academics and research students to present and discuss their research with colleagues across the University and CHASE consortium, and with invited speakers who include Jaime Del Val, transdisciplinary media artist, philosopher, activist, Director of the Metabody Institute: metabody.eu; artists and filmmakers Ruth MacLennan, Sarah Turner, Shona Illingworth, Tim Meacham and Luciano Zubillaga; electroacoustic composer Aki Pasoulas; environmental scientist Joseph Tzanopoulos and Yvonne Salmon, Chair of the Cambridge University Counterculture Research Group and writer on law, literature and visual culture, this one day event opens up a dynamic space for discussion, debate and exchange.
