Session 2: July 2 – July 21, 2018
Session 3: July 29 – August 17, 2018

About the Summer School:
The Off The Beaten Track program started in 2006 and is now – with 24 editions over the past 12 years – the longest standing anthropology field school in the world. Our basecamp is located on the islet of Gozo, one of the three inhabited islands of the Maltese Archipelago in the heart of the Mediterranean. The program offers a unique opportunity to acquire ‘in the field’ experience. The islands present a balance of past and present, where rural Mediterranean traditions intersect with foreign influence in small villages.

The Malta Summer School international faculty and staff help connect students and locals. They facilitate and monitor the progress of each student’s project and guide all interested participants through the process of publishing the results of their research. The program is residential and conducted in English.

The participants:
The field school is directed towards young anthropologists and cultural scientists; however, any individual who would like to learn about anthropological research and fieldwork is welcome. Previous knowledge or experience is not required. We aim for an individually tailored program that can start at any level. Even PhD research (or pre-research) can be included and guided. The school has a strong socio-cultural focus, but any topic can be covered in the individual program of the student. Each session has a maximum of 16 participants with a 2:1 student to staff ratio. Places are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis to suitably qualified candidates.

Projects:
The program focuses on an individual research project carried out by each participant over the course of the program. Faculty will also work on their own projects in collaboration with participants.

– Anthropology of Food & Eating
– Smells like Fieldwork – Methods in Sensory Anthropology
– The good old Gozo days – Perspectives from the anthropology of aging
– Honeybee-culture in Gozo and Malta
– Oral History in fieldwork
– Graphic Anthropology

A ‘turtally’ fantastic experience by Sonia Vallochia

The Kent Work Experience Bursary gives an opportunity to students to think about work experience in a different way. The world is the smallest its even been thanks to how easy and accessible traveling has become. Nevertheless, flight costs to go abroad still place a heavy burden on students; therefore, receiving a bursary to aid with the costs incurred is a great advantage for students seeking to have a different internship experience from the ones offered at home.

Finding an internship abroad is an exciting process because you find what seems like endless opportunities. In the field of conservation, the Tropics are one of the most interesting and thrilling places to work because of their abundant and diverse levels of biodiversity (over 50% of Earth’s species are found in tropical rainforests alone!). The experience that I gained doing proper field-work research in Malaysia cannot be compared to any other work I’ve done; it gave me a new insight on future careers and in what direction to guide my professional life.

I spent 10 weeks of my summer on Lang Tengah, a 2 km2 island off the coast of Terengganu, in Malaysia. I interned at a small organisation called Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW) which works to protect sea turtles nesting on the island. There are 7 species of sea turtles, 3 of which can be found in Terengganu. Unfortunately, due to unsustainable fishing practices, turtle egg consumption and detrimental human activities, one of the species is virtually extinct (the Leatherback), and another, the Hawksbill, is on the brink of extinction. LTTW receives volunteers from all around the world each week, and one of my duties on the project’s eco-friendly camp-site was to educate the volunteers on sea turtle ecology, as well as shark ecology, coral ecology and marine pollution.

Living 24 hours a day for 10 weeks on a camp-site without basic commodities, such as running water, plumbing and electricity, allowed me not only to gain a skill much required for field-work conservation research, but it also gave me a new outlook on life. Living in busy cities and being constantly preoccupied with different activities alienates people from nature, so that they can no longer feel the bond they intrinsically have to the environment. However, when you become submerged by nature, you quickly reform that lost relationship. Furthermore, living in a very basic manner allowed me to experience for a very limited time the needs of impoverished communities. Most conservation work takes place in areas inhabited by indigenous or poor communities, and disputes between environmental organisations or governmental institutions and these communities compromise the success of conservation projects. Talking to the inhabitants of the island allowed me to understand their needs and the ways that they viewed their neighbours, a foreign conservation group. As can be imagined, disputes with the locals arose every so often, especially with those that used to poach the eggs and still maintained a perception that the turtles were there for them to exploit.

My favourite part of the internship was seeing the diverse wildlife, namely swimming past three spotted eaglerays. The numerous species I saw improved my species identification skills and increased my curiosity on groups of animals I wasn’t previously so interested in, such as amphibians and terrestrial reptiles. Furthermore, I was very keen to coordinate the volunteers and organise daily activities for them, such as going snorkelling, beach clean-ups and quizzes. I learned lots about managing people, communicating effectively and building on my leadership skills. All these skills will definitely serve me in future careers and also differentiate me to employers following graduation. Overall, my internship allowed me to experience new cultures and gave me a sense of what it would be like working in different countries and environments.

Progress made during weekly beach clean-ups.

Internship opportunity – work with lemurs in Madagascar

The Behavioural Ecology & Sociobiology Unit within the Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH (DPZ), is an independent research institute member of the Leibniz Association located in Göttingen, Germany. Researchers in this unit essentially study the behaviour, ecology and biodiversity of vertebrates, with a special focus on lemurs and New World monkeys, in their study sites in Madagascar and Peru.

Internship in animal behaviour in Madagascar

Location of the internship

Kirindy Forest, Madagascar. The German Primate Center (DPZ) has operated a field station in this forest since 1993. The field station provides basic accommodation for about 10 researchers and our local team. The field station is provided with solar power, kitchen, and individual cabins

Expected work

The candidate is expected to contribute to the data collection of a PhD project through animal observations in the field, but may also develop his own problematic. A possible thematic is for example:

Intersex differences in scent-marking behaviour in the red-fronted lemurs
Scent-marking behaviours have been suggested to have different functions as, territory demarcation (intergroup spacing), food resource ownership, intra-sexual competition or inter-sexual communication. These behaviours represent different costs and benefits depending on the sex of the individual. Females will have a greater interest to defend territory and resources as they are philopatric, whereas immigrant males will possibly benefit from scent marking by being better tolerated in the group. By comparing the spatial distribution, frequency and nature of the scent marking behaviours between both sexes we aim to uncover the main function(s) of scent-marking in the red-fronted lemurs

Duration

60-90 days from July 2018

Costs

All costs are at the expense of the applicant. The estimated costs to consider are:
– Travel: visa (54€), international return flight ticket (750-900€), taxi-brousse seats (30€) or national flight ticket (500€), hotel fees and food for the days of transfer.
– During the internship: camp fees (7€/day), additional food costs possible for the weekend when returning to town (accommodation provided)

Required skills

Patience, ability to work independently, scientific rigour, and good physical condition

Contact and apply

Please send your application to Louise Peckre lpeckre@dpz.eu before the 12th April. Please remember to mention your period of availability

Guest speaker – Anthropology of Business session

Thursday 21 March at 9am  Keynes Lecture Theatre 5 (KLT5)

All students are invited to join us for an open ‘Anthropology of Business’ session, with former alumnus and guest speaker Christian Hurley (BA Social Anthropology, School of Anthropology and Conservation, University of Kent 2012)

For the past six years, Christian has worked in the world of research, brand consultancy and strategic planning. Whether it’s the future of pet ownership, exploring the hidden motivations of online betting behaviour, or advising Nestlé on their vision for Corporate Social Responsibility, Anthropology has been an ongoing influence. The agencies he has worked for have all claimed to use ‘Ethnography’ or ‘Anthropology’ in their approach.

The extent to which this has deviated from its academic origins has varied a great deal. Christian will speak about how Anthropology is used in a world where the word ‘person’ is substituted for ‘consumer’.

The session will yield insight into what it is like for a social anthropology to work with a business. Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions about how Anthropology can be useful for business. This can include project design, participant observation, fieldwork skills and techniques, and the many challenges such work entails. Students’ participation is expected!

Volunteer on an advisory committee with the National Trust

The National Trust at  Bodiam Castle  are looking to recruit a couple of Kent students to participate in, or simply attend on a short term basis, the Bodiam Castle Advisory Committee.

The committee was originally set up as part of Lord Curzon’s gift to the National Trust in 1926, to ensure that the Castle was looked after ‘by learned people’ in perpetuity. The committee is there to help the National trust protect Lord Curzon’s gift to the nation and are very keen to recruit informed representatives of the younger generation to it.

Bodiam is a fascinating site, which, as well as being a fourteenth-century moated castle, includes within its landscape evidence of a key Neolithic, then Roman, then Medieval, cross roads; a Roman Fort; and evidence of medieval fish and Mill ponds. It’s wharf area was once a thriving port and it is still possible to travel by boat to Bodiam Castle.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for one or two interested students to enrich their knowledge and understanding of how museums or heritage bodies work. Sitting on the Bodiam Advisory Committee means having a role in decision making about the Castle going forward and also experiencing first hand how the National Trust works with such inherited bodies. Bodiam’s General Manager of Portfolio is always on the committee and senior members of Bodiam staff regularly attend to give presentations and updates.

Any student interested in a future within museums or heritage will gain enormous insights into the way heritage charities work with trustees and similar bodies. You will gain first-hand understanding of the pressures to conserve and protect the built and landscape environments, whilst also raising necessary funds to carry out such work.

If you are interested, please contact Dr Michele Moatt with your CV and a brief explanation of why you would like to volunteer on the committee: Michele.Moatt@nationaltrust.org.uk
